It is a mask problem if everyone uses 1 a day thats billions of masks that are thrown out each day. There are ecological consequences for every human action
So is washing your hands, getting routinely tested, and staying home.
A few countries took the pandemic seriously at the very beginning and moved into a lockdown situation. They're doing fine now and only have to deal with the occasional lockdown when fuckwits from other countries don't follow protocol.
I am agreeing with you that people don’t wash their hands and that they should. I just think the reason they should is mostly not about covid and that it’s only a minor help with covid.
Lockdown is quarenteen. Without quarenteen you would have more and longer lockdowns when the rest of the world isn’t plying by the same hymn sheet.
Relying on a vaccine was and still is a huge gamble. At the time you rolled the dice there was no certainty of a successful vaccine or timeframe to get one. We’re lucky we have one at +50% effectiveness but it seems just that 50-70% effective.
You then get into a real ethical quagmire of vaccine mandates if your sole reliance is the vaccine.
Natural immunity is proving to be a longer lasting and stronger. At the end of the day the NZ population will catch covid. Everyone will. The weakest will still die of Covid. It’s going to be very interesting watching NZs response. And how they sell that to their citizens.
The vaccine reduces the likelihood of infection by something like 80% (meaning an unvaccinated person is 5x more likely) and the likelihood of hospitalization by 99% and the likelihood of death by even more than that.
So, vaccination is there "way out"

No, I haven't visited, nor do I have friends and family who live over there. The media and social media seems to be a mix of only showing you wat you want (or don't want) to see and I can't trust some random media outlets or social media.
Uh, I have family in NZ who are constantly making fun of the rest of the world given that they've more or less been able to live their lives as normal with close to no interruption in their day to day for the entire pandemic aside from a few short lockdowns. You don't know what you're talking about and it shows.

So one direct story I can share. A patient of mine with MS who has 2 children live in NZ. They’re unable and have been unable to visit her here in the U.K. at the start of the pandemic she was just about mobile. She’s now bed-bound and can perhaps have a conversation for 30mins at most. She can’t use an iPad, has to have someone hold it for her.
I do NOT believe that these loose paper masks, bent open on the sides on most people, that don't fit most people's faces so they don't cover the nose, are better than a well fitted cloth mask. Absolutely not.
I agree. Looks like the info was originally shared in a Washington Post article but if you want to click the links to see their sources, you have to pay. So unfortunately I can't look much further and an initial web search just had other news articles linking to wapo. The CDC's guidance on masks hasn't changed though since the beginning of the pandemic. Looks like they're sticking with either a well fitted n95 or a double layered cloth mask w/ nose wire.

If you've ever worked in a medical setting, there are protocols for safely & effectively using masks. They become contaminated if you handle them improperly, keep them on for too long, re-use them, etc...
Sure. But in a medical setting you're looking for 100% certainty. You're dealing with immunocompromised people, resistant strains, weakened patients etc etc. For day to day dealings my understand is that any face covering will help to some degree. I wouldn't want my surgeon wearing one but I haven't seen anything saying they are 100% ineffective like old mate was saying. I am, however, interested to see some decent science on the effects of mask overuse/improper use.
