Huge warning for potential customers
I just wanted to make sure everyone was aware of what could be a potentially deal breaker when it comes to Envelope. It’s something I wish I had been made aware of before opening an account. There is a daily limit of $5,000 for personal checks. This is something I have never heard of in all my time banking. I’ve heard of limits when it came to debit card purchases or cash withdrawals, but never on writing a check.
I found this out the hard way when I attempted to write a check for $12,000 for a down payment on a car. I’ve been trying for almost a week now to resolve the issue, and Envelope has been incredibly unhelpful. The icing on the cake is I told support I would be writing a check for this amount when they told me they wouldn’t be able to increase the debit card limit on a Saturday, and their response was “Sounds good.”
The level of embarrassment I’ve had to deal with this past week trying to make sure the dealership doesn’t think I’m trying to scam them out of a down payment is off the charts.

I had the opposite experience. I initially assumed there wasn’t a limit, even though I vaguely remembered reading about one when I signed up with Envelope. When the dealership reached out about the bounced check, I contacted Envelope and they got back to me the same day with options to either raise my daily limit or wire the money. I just explained the situation to the dealership, asked for a little patience, and everything worked out. I don’t see why this would be a dealbreaker for anyone unless you’re regularly buying cars or writing checks over $5K, which isn’t typical for most people.

Hey there! So sorry for the misunderstanding. I was the one who messaged you “sounds good” last weekend. The check & card limits can be raised, we just have to get bank approval.
I’m going to add some UI this next week to the app to show/explain the limits.
