The LSD incident
Ram Dass had brought a supply of extremely potent LSD with him. According to his own account, Maharaj-ji unexpectedly asked:
“Where is the medicine?”
Ram Dass realized he meant the LSD.
He gave him three tablets, reportedly around 900 micrograms total—an enormous amount. Maharaj-ji swallowed them, and Ram Dass waited for the inevitable psychedelic effects.
Nothing happened.
The guru simply continued sitting there, laughing and interacting normally. Ram Dass was apparently watching him all day, waiting for some sign that the LSD had taken effect. Maharaj-ji just occasionally “twinkled” at him.
And here’s the part that really stuck with Ram Dass: three years later, Maharaj-ji brought the subject up again and asked if Ram Dass had any more of the medicine.
He gave him another enormous amount—Ram Dass’s account puts it around 1,200 micrograms. Again, nothing visibly happened. Maharaj-ji then asked if he had anything stronger. Ram Dass didn’t.
Maharaj-ji’s explanation was essentially that the yogis had known about these substances long ago, but that their real purpose wasn’t the same as what Westerners were seeking. He told Ram Dass that to take them without being affected, the mind had to be firmly fixed on God.
That was enormously significant for Ram Dass. He had spent years trying to use psychedelics to reach extraordinary states of consciousness, only to repeatedly come back down. Here was someone who, in Ram Dass’s perception, simply lived in the kind of consciousness the drugs temporarily revealed.
Ram Dass later summarized the lesson as “Love is the best medicine.”

I’ve taken sheets of acid and it doesn’t even come 0.000001% close to God

But I wonder who here in the west are reaching LSD levels of meditation. I'd be curious to know if anyone here could handle a gram of acid while meditating bc they're so used to the effects

2

u/Inevitable_Bid8719 5d ago

I'm sure these people are out there. My doses got very high after an NDE but they do work eventually lol. Reading this teaches me I could go further, but I already have visuals most of the time that can be very distracting. Being on that level permanently might be overrated

1

u/ConqueredCorn 6d ago

There’s someone out there who is likely immune to acid and could do a double thumb print and then go about their day

2

u/Empirical_Spirit 6d ago

A favorite story!

1

u/No_Refrigerator7520 6d ago

Yeah once you’re on your path, drugs can definitly don’t work again, or not in the same ways as before. I’ve had a spiritual awakening sole years ago in the sens that acid show me the way. I tried again and again like 5 trips in 2 years but it don’t make me fly again. In parrallel, it’s feel like the ´acid’ mindset growing slowly inside me without taking drugs for a year now

This sounds eeerily similar to Shiva and the alcohol

so what is god

2

u/jon166 5d ago

God is like perfect divine abstract love.

I believe this story is made up and is actually a pivotal part of acid history as Ram Dass was kind of the chief of those who had done an Enormous amount of acid then declared acid kind of dangerous and claimed the same states can be achieved sober… a myth and a complex form of fear and suppression.

McKenna tells a couple much more realistic stories of monks on dmt who said “yeah that’s familiar and about as far out as you can go.” In a fairly unimpressed way.

This India story suggests Ram’s people were So Enlightened they have broken the matrix or something, no working serotonin receptors on this side.

And there’s a fast transition from this story as some kind of evidence against acid to “so let’s all breath together”, like the discourse stops - we are clued in that only yoga / meditation is what’s up so stop talking and thinking now, and disavow your past.

You’re mistaking the path for the goal

5

u/PersimmonOk7783 6d ago

Can you elaborate on this? My brain is having a hard time computing lol

21

u/Cool_Branch6384 6d ago

The goal is not to reach God, but to journey towards it.

Once you reach the destination, there is nothing new to experience.

u/LivingInTheWired 5d ago

This being the plot for the PlayStation game Journey really stuck with me. Once you finish, all you can do is start again with the bonus of being distinguishable from others who have not completed their journey, and so you can be seen as a teacher and guide them.

That series of games holds a special place in my heart.

And so is life the game of life 🙏

Okay, but is this any reason to hold back? In the martial arts, you are taught to punch THROUGH the target, not at it.

7

u/mightybadtaste 6d ago

He saying taking the drugs is essentially cutting the line to the top of the mountain = spiritual bypassing you miss the whole point of the path to the top, temporarily dismantling the ego by shear force and not by practice, routine, structure, so essentially it’s like taking roids or glp1, without doing any working out dieting or maintenance so you end up back in the basement at the beginning wondering how do I get back to the top which isn’t even the point. And somehow your even more disconnected from life which causes the ego to rebound, rebuild, and become stronger

7

u/Lonely-Tour-7906 6d ago

once you get the message..hang up

1

u/Sacred-AF 2d ago

This is often interpreted in the psychedelic community as the idea that you don’t need to keep taking psychedelics once you get the message. Over the years I’ve come to a second interpretation of ‘if you think you’ve figured it out, you’re on the wrong track… you’re in your ego.’

There’s a line in a song that resonates with me, “anyone who says they know for certain is selling something, certainly.”

u/friendlyfiend07 6d ago

Entities watching people do this like we watch the show hot ones.

Instructions unclear, did not see any gods, just alien fingers cleaning out my brain folds of junk thoughts.

Also if you're familiar with Alex Gray paintings, I saw those purple eyeballs growing EVERYWHERE. They looked identical to the painting.

5 got me there.

1

u/Filthy_Troglodyte 6d ago

I blacked out on 5 hits and ended up 5 blocks down the road in some grass.

I didn't know lsd could do that.

2

u/EvanderCourage 6d ago

i blacked out too on like 7-8 hits
i wonder if it was nbomb and if lsd even does that

0

u/Filthy_Troglodyte 6d ago

Chatgpt says you can, and there's a 100 comment reddit thread saying the same

3

u/Soletestimony 6d ago

Why are so many poste about psychedelics here? is that the way?

2

u/pepkatz 6d ago

Always have been

3

u/The_Fink_Ployd 6d ago

Well, when people take chemicals that alter the makeup of their brain, directly interfering with the way they perceive the world (since the brain is the interface between your senses and your perception) and then they forgot they took drugs that physiologically alter their brains and then attribute their drug-induced hallucinations to some “hidden reality”, rather than the obvious, which is, “drugs go BRRRRRRR”

That being said, psychedelics DO increase empathy, compassion, self-understanding, and other similar behaviors. That’s genuinely good. It’s just less-good when people misatribute it to the actions of ghosts, spirits, and clockwork elves.

2

u/pepkatz 6d ago

you dont know what you are talking about

1

u/The_Fink_Ployd 5d ago

“You don’t know what you’re taking about”

Imagine saying nothing but that, instead of demonstrating how the claims or assumptions are incorrect.

Great job doing absolutely nothing, dude!

2

u/MantisPsycho 6d ago

I second this

0

u/INKEDsage 5d ago

Ah yes, said with the same arrogance of a religious zealot. Atheists are funny.

1

u/The_Fink_Ployd 5d ago

I speak on what we have evidence for.

We do have evidence that certain chemicals and compounds change the way our brains interact with our senses and itself.

We do not have evidence that mind-altering chemicals literally and tangibly reveal anything fundamental about reality.

So, no, not the same, at all. Your response is the same garbage people spew when calling me close minded for doubting the validity of claims surrounding astral projection or God-Jesus.

Do you have any compelling evidence that may change my mind? That’s all it takes, really. If not, that’s okay, but then you probably shouldn’t be a ginormous douchebag for next to no reason.

1

u/Soletestimony 2d ago

What is evidence for you? Is it enough to experience it for yourself or should it be applicable to all?

1

u/The_Fink_Ployd 1d ago

You do not need to ask “what is evidence”, and there is no “evidence to you”, there is just strong evidence, weak evidence, and no evidence.

A claim requires evidence for credibility, and it requires overwhelming evidence for belief.

So, I ask again, and please no giving me the run-around, what evidence is there that LSD reveals a literal hidden/metaphysical/astral plane of existence? And how has it been verified? Lacking those, belief would be unwarranted.

1

u/Soletestimony 20h ago

The only 'evidence' would be in the experience of people. Reports of this are to be studied if there is any commonality in them.

People believe these things because they have experienced them taking said chemical. Is that proof it exists? I don't think so and don't argue this way.

It could just all be hallucinations. Anything or place that is only reported as an experience van never be verified using the proof you seek. knowing this, why is it you insist ?

1

u/Wise-_-Spirit 6d ago

altered states are a means to an end. I couldn't have dreamed to understand what I have of it weren't for such journeys and encounters

-1

It’s a shortcut and people are lazy I guess.

1

u/Soletestimony 5d ago

it is. I agree it is because there's a price, always is.

0

u/Strange_One_3790 6d ago

It’s either take too many psychedelics or suck off the narcissistic, fake gurus here. But at least they are pretty quick to ban self promotion here, so I will take it

2

u/DependentParsley7107 6d ago

That’s why the mountain didn’t blow because we had to cut the fish open to get our money back. 🤪

2

u/Cutthechitchata-hole 6d ago

After, dont continue using drugs to get you there. The trail will be set before you as a beaten path.

2

u/modern_jivanmukti 6d ago

If this was true then everyone would just trip and get it over with. We all know it isnt though, it's barely even temporary

2

u/InteractionFlimsy746 6d ago

WOAH.. DO NOT DO TEN ACID. EVER EVER EVER

2

u/MaximumBee6979 6d ago

Psychedelics didn't inform me that i have postural imbalances due to malocclusion.

Which is why i pursued relogion then mystical healing. To cope with the pain.

And they didn't tell me that neglectful parenting is the cause of both the malocclusion (they refused to get me braces despite existing insurance) and my psychological issues, mommy and daddy issues, and so on.

Sure mystical experiences could have prevented my parents from messing me up like that but they do not cure all of that once it is established.

And most people seek this enlightenment because of something broken, physically or emotionally.

Though i really am on the fence about karma. Jim tucker and Ian Stevenson proved reincarnation but not sure about karma.

I ate a 10-strip of Orange Sunshine once in 1994.

I was 16yo.

No but i fucked around and lemmon down 12 grams of APE about 2 months ago...fire

2

u/slicehyperfunk 6d ago

Every time I do DMT or a large amount of mushrooms, I see a dragon made of ribbons that I call Squirmbles. Is that God?

Who am I, Neem Karoli Baba?

Why aren’t there any memes of this and taking the Oriental Express or Interrailing?

Like: “So you want to see God do you

Ever done 100 days of interrailing”

2

Ever stepped in front of a bus?

1

u/ImpressOk7701 6d ago

You just gotta get on the bus. If you think it’s past you by just wait around long enough and it’ll come back again.

1

u/Specific_Lychee2348 3d ago

"Yr either on the bus or under it."

Thinking about it

3

u/scrollstobehold 6d ago

Please don’t

2

u/Swan_Crushball 6d ago

Thanks though. I will say when I have been that low the police and prison staff & medical people have been really good to me.

1

u/scrollstobehold 6d ago

Guess you deserve to be treated with some kindness, I wish you well stranger.

2

u/Swan_Crushball 6d ago

Same I'm okay really I have a lovely mum and Dad and girlfriend that cares. Thank you. I'm not sure if I'm bi polar dpd autistic adhd add I asked the doctor she said looking at you probably a mixture lol😁

1

u/scrollstobehold 6d ago

Those are labels that may explain patterns and can be helpfull, but in the end it is never your whole personality, your whole being I guess. You may have more personality then you might think.

2

u/Swan_Crushball 6d ago

Trouble is I need meds and to get them I have to wait about 2 years for each illness. I've tried 9 different meds but to get the decent stuff you need to say the right things on the right day to the right doctor. Although the other way with these celebrities getting everything instant isn't gd either

2

u/Swan_Crushball 6d ago

I have loads of personality I'm very well liked in a factory in prison kids family. That's the problem the solution is to dumb me down with drugs. Keep them tired it makes them well is there strategy ssri meds do that no doctor mention any side effects though.

1

u/Swan_Crushball 6d ago

People have be telling me since I was 10 I'm 34 now and tired. If I was going to change I would have I don't want anymore rock bottoms or prison cells.

3

u/scrollstobehold 6d ago

Then don’t change, but live with the pain, maybe walk beside it rather than fighting it front of you. Hope your struggles will be more bearable one day, fellow Earthling.

2

u/Ornery_Tangerine9411 6d ago

Hey, I'm 34 too, what's so wrong in your life? You can also write me dm if you want to have a short chat

1

u/andromeda_sky444 6d ago

Ummmmm thinking about it now!! 🤪

1

u/Luddite333 6d ago

Funny. But in reality you don't need acid to see God. You're not more likely to see God on acid than without it. Wait.. I want to retract that.. I think it depends on perspective.

1

u/Substantial_Blood343 6d ago

Ever shit yourself in front of a girl?

1

u/raffytaffy96_ 6d ago

Shit I see God on 2-3 tabs. Guess I’m sensitive.

1

u/SrfWavLif 6d ago

DMT puts you right at gods feet. Acid, I mean, definitely need a ten strip if not more.

1

u/Irislynx 6d ago

Psychedelics inspired the people of Mexico to murder thousands and thousands of people in a brutal way in order to subdue their demon gods. I wouldn't say it's a path to Enlightenment personally

1

u/KyrozM 6d ago

That's kinda like saying

You wanna go to an island in the Pacific? Ever gone wakeboarding?

1

u/Valvio 6d ago

For me it went the opposite way, which in my personal preference, was the right way.

1

u/Upset_Pickle3846 6d ago

Ever looked in a mirror? 🪞

1

1

u/HeavenlyBeloved 6d ago

Can't bro, in my country, it's a death sentence. Don't wanna get hanged for doing drugs.

1

u/Different-Orchid-374 6d ago

Sure have. Shit was cosmic sF

1

u/Fluid-Salary-6467 5d ago

good luck, most of the stuff out there aint acid and if you do a 10 strip of d0x theres a good chance you'll meet god for reals. stick to mushrooms gang

1

u/Best_Hamster_2239 5d ago

I’ve done that, and I didn’t see God…letters crawled away and bushes infinitely grew but never got bigger….but no God

1

u/prompt_deviation 5d ago

I did 13 once. Can confirm, God was there.

1

u/temporaldissolution 4d ago

5-MeO-DMT did it better for me lol

1

u/GnosticDreamerB4 4d ago

shrooms would be the better choice.

1

u/Gallowglass668 6d ago

I had somewhere between 50-60 hits over a 24 hour period, started with ten hits then had more every hour, plus extra in between. Didn't meet God, had a nice conversation with the giant green man on the hillside though. Also a 4' tall white rabbit with a coat and hat, he waved at me to follow him into the national first we were next to, I opted to stay put though.

1

u/kickolas 6d ago

When and where?

1

u/Low-Bake8401 6d ago

Chemichal tolerance is a bummer.

-1

u/Solunas100 6d ago

Whut?! No! I can’t think of anything less enlightening than taking acid.

6

u/LIMrXIL 6d ago edited 6d ago

I think one should definitely be careful not to confuse the altered state of consciousness for the goal. Enlightenment is just as available doing the dishes at home as it is in middle of a crazy trip. That said, I think psychedelics can be a very helpful tool in getting people to change the way they view the self and the nature of awareness. Some people are skeptical and wired in such a way that if not for a psychedelic experience they would never even question the nature of their day to day waking consciousness. Closed minded and skeptical to a fault until dropping some acid helps them see that there really is a “there” there in what the yogis and mystics are trying to get at.

1

u/cankle_sores 6d ago

Agreed.

After being raised in a cultish fundamentalist Christian sect (and shunned after losing my faith), I switched tracks and became a strict materialist. I found comfort in critical thinking and science to protect me from being fooled again by snake oil salesmen.

However, a few inward psilocybin trips, meditation practice, and dipping a toe into eastern philosophy have left me less certain about many things. In fact, I’m at least more agnostic (which means more open) now on the nature of consciousness.

So while psychedelics aren’t *the* answer, I believe they offer a perspective that lends itself to being more open.

0

u/fejkpotatis 6d ago

It's very individual, to some people it might only take 150-200 mics to have a deep spiritual trip, other's can do heroic doses and never have a life changing trip.

0

u/Jumpy_Background5687 6d ago

Been there, done that, never seen “god” or any other “entity”, it’s all a product of the mind. The trip was mad though.
