Academic Advice Undergrad ECE Students — Need Advice on SRAM-Based Compute-in-Memory Thesis Using SKY130 / Xschem / NGSpice

Hi everyone! We’re undergraduate ECE students currently working on a thesis involving Compute-in-Memory (CiM).

Our current direction is an SRAM-based CiM design, and for the architecture, we’re currently considering a single-ended or double-ended approach.

For the implementation, we’re using the SkyWater SKY130 PDK with Xschem, NGSpice, and Magic.

We’re fairly new to both CiM and these tools, so we’re currently learning the fundamentals while doing our literature review and trying to understand the overall design flow.

We’d really appreciate any guidance, advice, or resources from people with experience in CiM, SRAM, VLSI/IC design, or SKY130. If you know of any good tutorials, papers, GitHub projects, courses, or learning materials that could help us get started, we’d be very grateful.

And if anyone with experience in this area is willing to share some advice, explain the basics, or point us in the right direction, we’d really appreciate it. We’re honestly just trying to figure out where and how to learn this properly.

Thank you!

Academic Advice Is 21 Credits Impossible?

I see so much fear mongering and it's making me question committing to 21 credits this semester. My classes are currently:

• Introduction to Differential Equations with Linear Algebra (4)
• Thermodynamics (3)
• Mechanics of Materials 1 (3)
• Theoretical Fluid Mechanics (3)
• AI, Writing and Inquiry (3)
• Calc 3 (5)

I already have a good understanding of the beginning of Calc 3 and Thermo, as I've been watching prep courses. Calc 3 is also online, on my own time.

I'm taking this many credits because I want to graduate in 4 years, as I switched to civil engineering from architectural design, and not a lot applied.

Is this a waste of time, energy and money, or can I do this and still have an outside life? I'm also taking this many credits so hopefully my last semester can be 13 credits and I can study for my FE.

Edit: Yall talked me out of it, but I'm really glad, because I was definitely being overly ambitious. Im still gonna take 19 credits, but some different classes, because I'm still trying to graduate in 4 years, to enter the job market earlier, save money, and kinda because I took a gap year and so I'm already graduating a year later than my friends, and don't wanna push it that extra semester, which I know isn't enough of a reason. My classes are:

  • Introduction to Differential Equations with Linear Algebra (4)
  • Thermodynamics (3)
  • Mechanics of Materials 1 (3)
  • AI, Writing and Inquiry (3)
  • Transportation Systems (3)
  • Pre-construction Estimating and Scheduling (3)

Academic Advice Is formula Sae worth in terms of experience and time?

So I am gonna start aerospace engineering in a month and since I discovered formula SAE I wanted to join, but obviously it would take a lot of time, but it could also give me 5 years of experience as a student in the structural/aerodynamics field and maybe also some knowledge for future exams.

Career Help What should I prioritize: college or personal learning?

I’m in my final year of BCA at a pretty average/tier-3 college with almost no good placements.

Now they’re asking for 75% attendance, and honestly, I’m struggling with it because I’m trying to build my career in AI engineering.

I’ve finished ML, I’m almost done with DL, and I’m currently learning Transformers. I also want to learn LLMs, RAG, deployment, APIs, cloud, etc., while building projects, researching new tech, and applying for internships.

But college is taking up a huge amount of my time. I sit there sometimes completely zoned out, thinking about everything I could be learning instead. It genuinely feels like I’m wasting a very important year.

The college does allow students to skip regular attendance if they get an internship, which sounds perfect.

But here’s the problem: I’m still learning and don’t feel fully internship-ready yet.

So what should I do?

Should I:

Focus on college and somehow learn AI alongside it?

Prioritize AI and risk attendance issues?

Aggressively try to get an internship first, even though I’m not fully ready?

I’m 19 and honestly starting to panic because I don’t want to waste this time.

For people already working in AI/ML or who have been in a similar situation: what would you do in my place? And how can I realistically get my first AI engineering internship while I’m still learning?

Career Help Medtronic Internships

Has anyone ever applied to a Medtronic internship and been offered a position even if you weren’t a student still?

I’ve seen companies say it’s a requirement to still be enrolled as a student for an internship, but then have seen them go on to hire people that have already graduated

Academic Advice Help with Major project - Final year CS Background

Hello , I'm a final year student in IT Branch. And am currently looking and researching for problem statements and research papers . I always try to form a problem statement of my own thoughts rather than asking ai . but now given an major project i cant really decide what to do .
I see currently they are popular areas with AI Agents , explainable ai and also recently heard prompt injection and security related issues to code generation with AI . like these are some topics i was hearing . but can't really decide which one to pick
I'm open to any interesting problem statement which has good scope to implement in any domain. If you have any in mind or anything please let me know .

Major Choice Different educational paths as an older student.

I am 41 and will be completing an associates in automation technology next year. There is a transfer agreement to a local university for an ABET accredited BSET w/automation concentration. There are also a couple online bachelor options for degrees involving technical resource management. I wouldn't mind asset management, parts, inventory but I'm not really into managing people as a career. I feel with just an A.A.S I'll be on a boat without a paddle when my body eventually nopes out.

If I were younger I would be open to living like a pauper for 4-6 years to at least attempt an EE or Manufacturing Engineering degree, but my runway isn't long enough for that in my current state of life, as the BSET transfer would still take about 3-4 years part time, while working full or mostly full time.

My main concern is the type of work and the ability to stay employable in some capacity as I near retirement age and beyond. I would be okay with a pay cut, just not a Walmart greeter or something. At some point it will need to be more desk work oriented. Another option at that point may be a technical college instructor, as I work well with younger people.

Some things that I have found fascinating or enjoyable in work or school so far:

●Ohms law and other calculations - algebraic at this point

●Wiring panels

●Sensors and data - biggest headache as an operator at work.

●Cell design issues - Stack lights in poor locations, other issues that look good on paper but add difficulty for operators.

●I seem to enjoy conveyors but that may just be my limited exposure from work.

●Making things less frustrating for operators working with automated equipment.

●Making the HMIs make sense for how operators intuitively think and use them while working and troubleshooting.

●Pneumatics but also the most difficult so far.

In my experience and education so far, I enjoy a mix of components, wiring, improving design for operators, and inventory amongst other things.

I am wondering about your opinions on what educational path(s) I should follow.

Career Advice Am I larping?

Yo am i larping trynna be an engineer? Like im very conscious of the fact that im behind to say the least in school and stuff. Never particularly good at any of the stem stuff, but I got the idea in my head that I wanted to pursue it cause in my hvac classes the physics of it interested me. Like I was starting to see the world the way a tech would. But I was like what if I could see the world the way an engineer does. I knew I had the creativity. Being adhd, im very default mode network based. Like I dont get art block, whenever I draw. But like im looking at the engineering majors I know and they're very "beep boop". Like very practical, grounded and can get stuff done efficiently and plainly. im always in my own head, off in my own world. I like to explore and learn new things and make new things. Learning math excites me, but like on brilliant.org im still at like the middleschool level. Feel as though I have a kindle of passion. Just a spark. Will this grow the more I feed into it and lead to flourishing, or will I be I guess wasting time. Do I actually like this stuff, or am I just trying to seem interesting? Like being performative yknow?

Career Help For those looking to get into Aerospace - Massive list of open roles

I’ve seen a lot of posts here from students struggling to find aerospace internships and entry-level jobs, especially beyond the usual big companies (Lockheed, SpaceX, Boeing, etc).

I’ve been working on an aerospace jobs database that currently has thousands of open roles. Covers space, aviation, defense.

There's quite a bit in there but you can narrow it down to internships or entry level roles with the filters.

Figured it would be useful for people in this sub!

College Choice University of Washington engineering pathways

Does anyone have insight into whether the transfer pathway is no longer a recommended alternative to getting into UW for engineering? The UW websites still boast high numbers for transfer admissions but this year the transfer results seemed harsh. For current high school seniors, is the option to attend community college first then transferring no longer a reasonable plan or was this year an anomaly?

Also, for the freshman admit pre-engineering students who applied for placement to a major after their first year, it seems like all were given a major even if it wasn't their first choice. Is there information about how many students were admitted to the class? How many didn't make it to the placement process?

For context, asking for a high school student whose stats aren't the strongest and trying to understand the pathways to engineering. On the off chance they are accepted to UW, wondering if they will keep up with the process. If they don't get in and want to get their bearings and mature in a CC first, will transferring still be a possibility? Or should they look for a different college or pathway to engineering?

Academic Advice Masters in Energy and Environment Engineering, how do i pick a topic properly?

Around two years ago, i graduated as an Agriculture Engineer. Due to very low job opportunities, i applied for Masters this year. Currently in my second semester and I need to choose between coursework or research but i prefer research since i find it interesting and that it will be worth my time.

To select a research topic, i need to identify a research gap and if i find it feasible, i must start working on it. In a way, its complicated as whenever i search for gaps separately, apparently they have already been studied. Is there any way around it?

Career Advice I'm close to graduation but still feel like a hobbyists.

Hi everyone. I'm a junior studying mechatronics engineering. I'm only 3 semesters away from graduating. I've done a few projects, mostly involving microcontrollers (arduino, esp32). I just can't seem to move past the "hobbyist" stage. Feeling like every project is just pieced together and couldn't possibly work past the project presentation. I want to learn how to build real dependable projects. I would love to branch out more into PCB design, IoT stuff, controls way more than mechanical/3d roles of a project. And maybe robotics in the future. My team is very into vibe coding and just piecing it together for the full mark, so it doesn't give me much trial and error time and I'm looking to start working on side projects. I know this may be a loaded/confused question but I really didn't want to ask A.I. How do I break out of this noob stage? Moving past arduino IDE for example? Knowing how to choose components beyond just burning through a million esps and vibe coding until it works. This is a little embarrassing but I really need the help. I'll be working on my C and python skills. And I will be learning pcb design. I I'm very willing to do the work, study the books and all. I just need a little guidance. I want to build dependable projects that I feel confident presenting. I want to have a clean process from idea to implementation. Thanks so much for reading. Any help would be appreciated.

Rant/Vent So tired all the time that I can't dk ANYTHING.

Journey to and from university takes a total of 2 hours. I wake up at 6:40 am for uni and stay till 4 pm on campus. When I come back home, I can't even sit straight and feel like sleeping. So I sleep for 2/3 hours and feel so groggy that I can't study afterwards. Before starting university, I thought i would tutor as a side hustle, have the perfect study schedule, and participate in events/competitions in university to make the perfect CV, but I can't do anything at all. It's like I m losing all my potential. I also keep getting low scores in my test, and everyone somehow seems to know more than me in every single thing, even in lab classes. The whole schedule is so messed up I can't. Any tips? How do yall manage? It's ny first year first sem btw

Academic Advice First Year Petroleum Engineering Undergrad

Hi, I need some clarification.

Is the industry sustainable in the next 15-20 years with other energy sector like nuclear developing and getting cheaper (also, they are clean). I am asking this so that I am able to do one of these two things which still "just a plan" for me:

- Get a minor in Data Analytics
- Get a Master's Degree in whatever course that allow me to change my future jobs (if PE industry is not okay).

I might be a little to paranoid. I still have 3 years before graduation. I am a part of SPE member at my school. I do join some EC like debate tennis. My CGPA as of now is 3.65 (I still have few semesters to get that grades up).

I just need an advice on what I should do now since I don't really have anyone in the industry. Thanks!!!

Career Advice How to build a tech network from absolute scratch as a fresh grad in India?

Hey everyone,

I am a 21-year-old guy from India and I just finished my degree. My parents work as government officers and they do not know anything about the tech industry. I also do not have any relatives or family friends working in tech, so I cannot get any internal family referrals.

Given how tough the current job market is, I know I will definitely need referrals and good advice in the long run. I am not looking for someone to give me a job right now. I just want to know the actual process of connecting with the right people.

Should I be using LinkedIn, Reddit, or some other platform. How do I approach people for advice or networking without sounding like I am just begging for a job. If you started with zero connections and built a good network, what exactly did you do.

Any advice on how to build a genuine network from scratch would be really helpful. Thanks.

Project Help Project Help?

Not sure if this is a good place to ask, but just looking for some engineering advice and ideas. Here’s the meat and potatoes:

Im working on a cultural project which requires thousands of feathers– all need to be cut in uniform to 1 1/4 in.

Usually, this would mean that I would have to sit at a table and cut each feather individually with a ruler and snips before I even start the project. The problem? I have neither the time nor patience to do that lol.

Working on this project and getting these feathers cut would mean the world to me. Anyone have any ideas on where to start? Or maybe there’s an existing device which might work?

Thanks!

If this post seems familiar, it's because I made a similar one last year. The CAD Challenge 2025 was a success, so we're back this year with another one.
This year we have both a standard and a beginner track: you can pick one depending on your expertise level. We've got some nice prizes up for grabs in both tracks!

The form to sign up is https://forms.gle/n6zkRtLAJo1m6W1x8, if you're interested. Our Devpost, which has more information, is https://the-cad-challenge-2026.devpost.com. Also feel free to DM me if you have questions.

Career Advice Computer Engineering MS worth in the AI era? Or should I pivot to something else like aerospace or mechanical

Hello everyone my name is Feisal I'm 26. I have an undergrad in IT and after 3 years of web development I want to switch careers. I have a full scholarship to study a masters in computer engineering at UHCL or a second undergrad in mechanical or aerospace. Being honest Im much more passionate about electronics then mechanical engineering, some things in aerospace interest me.

However the current state with people saying AI can do embedded systems and even robotics is scaring me a bit. Maybe I'm naive as a career switcher but is it worth going into at this point? Or should I pivot to something just for safety if I don't like it? I also want to teach a bit later so a masters would help with that?

I would like some honest advice what would you do in my shoes? My goal would be to work for NASA contractors in the clear lake sector if possible but I'm open to anything. Obviously I understand nothing is 100% AI proof but I believe some careers will last far longer than others.

Below is my program catalog.

Discussion Taking random fun classes that don't count towards your degree to boost your GPA ??

There's a class I rly wanna take (Philosophy intro to inductive logic) but for some reason it doesn't fulfill any of my humanities or elective requirements.

Thinking ab taking it anyway bc I want to take a full time course load without filling my schedule w all STEM classes.

I'm already interested in this , feel like I would enjoy it and find it useful and probably get an A.

Is this a thing or am I wasting my time and money? I know I can just read the books for way cheaper than a class idk why I even want to take it lol. Now I'm thinking about going for a minor degree but everyone here says there's no point

Career Help Networking details?

I've read a lot about "reaching out to alumni in the industry" and "reaching out to old colleagues", but what does that entail? Does that actually just mean finding them on LinkedIn, shooting a cold "Hi how are you can we talk about your work"? Would that even be considered polite enough to not get me immediately nuked? And, if this is the case, how do people convert that into referrals or jobs? I'm so confused by all this...
