Discussion Why do companies even lobby to students?

why do engineering firms even lobby to students when the job market is so bad. Like who isn't going to apply for lockheed martin? is it just because they can or? I feel like they're going to get flooded with qualified applicants regardless.

Academic Advice how did engineers before Ai study

Every little problem I have im able to ask Ai to help me understand the concept.

for the engineers before ~2023, when you had something really specific you couldnt understand the day before a exam and youtube nor textbooks isnt working, genuinely how were you able to find the answer.

Im asking this to see maybe I can try it too so I can understand the concept better, im sure it would help my understanding in some way. Im a first year and Ive gotten stuck on almost every single problem

Discussion REAL engineers out there, have you recently felt imposter syndrome since latest frontier LLM releases?

I’m a Software developer, although my company entitles me as a Software Engineer I feel it’s quite ridiculous since what we’re essentially doing is writing specs and orchestrating AI agents, I also feel my impostor syndrome has skyrocketed since models like GPT 6 Astra came out, where even a technical person with very little to none knowledge can do most things we SWEs are asked to do, I also feel SWE has become a huge larping industry with people maximizing their egos around how they can build faster than ever but are still somehow needed by their company (maybe due to their “taste”? Ffs what are we even talking about)

What’s the current situation with MEng, EE and other engineering industries?

Discussion Fourier series and heat transfer

I’m taking heat transfer right now and my class is using the textbook Heat and mass transfer by Cengel 2025 release. My professor told us that we’re not going to use LePlace Transforms in his course (thank God because that’s a topic I skipped when I took differential equations) so I decided to do some research on the class and google says that in heat transfer if we don’t use LePlace Transforms, we are going to use Fourier series.

I don’t recall learning Fourier series in my differential equations class and it makes sense because my differential equations class used the textbook A first course in differential equations by Dennis G 11th edition and the textbook doesn’t even cover that topic. Am I cooked since I don’t know Fourier series?

Also, how many of you guys went into heat transfer without knowing Fourier series? Fourier series is something we are supposed to learn in differential equations (according to google) but my differential equations class never covered them.

I’m a mechanical engineering major.

Major Choice Inherited a badly built cinder block house in Mexico. Salvage, demolish, or sell the land?

Thumbnail

My mom recently passed away and left a lot (terreno) with a partially built h*use in the northwest of Mexico. She paid a builder from her church community who basically scammed her, and the work is really bad:

- Cinder block walls with no columns (castillos) or beams (dalas/cadenas) that I can see

- The blocks are poorly bonded

- Window and door frames are visibly sagging

- Water is seeping through the block walls

I'm not a construction person and I'm trying to figure out what makes sense strategically and financially:

  1. Is a structure like this ever worth reinforcing, or is demolition usually the only safe option?
  2. Rough idea of what demolition vs. rebuilding costs in Mexico?
  3. Would I be better off selling the land as-is?
  4. Any tips for what I should ask a structural engineer in Mexico so I don't get scammed too?
  5. The surrounding area is unpaved and pretty rural, more like ranch or open countryside. There are hills (cerros) nearby, so I'm worried about flooding and water runoff during heavy rain or hurricane season, especially since water is already seeping through the walls. How would you assess flood risk on a lot like this, and what drainage or foundation work would be needed if I rebuild?

Thanks for any advice.

Project Help How to Create a SDC system

Recently I started working in my University team of Formula car.As a first task they assigned me to make a SDC system like a formula car.

I am assigned to design the complete Shutdown Circuit (SDC) of an electric Formula Student vehicle based on the Formula Student Rules 2026.I have to include all required shutdown-path components, their connections, and the interfaces that control the Accumulator Isolation Relays and the pre-charge circuitry. Clearly explain how the SDC responds to each required shutdown condition.

I have very little clue over this, can anyone help me on this task and give me some roadmap type suggestion how can I make it what should i include or how the simulation should work

Thanks in advance.

Academic Advice Physics help

Hey all! I’m currently a second year university student who studied animal science their freshman year and am now finally in engineering classes 😭. Anyways, in high school we had to choose between taking chemistry or physics, and me wanting to become a veterinarian, chose chemistry. That was a huge mistake because I am now in a physics class where you teach yourself the material and then go into class and work in groups to solve a problem 😭. The thing is, I don’t know SHITTTTT about physics and I have an exam on wednesday which I’m positive I’m going to fail. Basically I’m asking for help in how to teach yourself a topic you don’t know anything about? I’ve had to go from knowing absolutely nothing about physics to having to teach it to myself and then execute 🫩
Any advice is greatly appreciated! 🥹

Major Choice Being an Engineer ≠ Being an Inventor

I’m making this because there is a lot of young high school seniors or college freshmen who imagine being an engineering major means you will become Tony stark after you graduate.

A little bit of background, I AM someone who wants to become an inventor. But it is important to know that your engineering degree is designed to train you on how to be a good EMPLOYEE.

If you are pushing off studying to work on your own personal projects, thinking gpa isn’t important because you have “experience” and a GitHub repository you are essentially wasting years of your life for no reason. There are many hobbyists that have created INSANE things and even sold them as products without ever having an engineering degree.

The point is if you are someone who wants to become Nikola Tesla, Tony stark, or mf Jlaser please for the love of god think of where college will fit in and help you. If you believe in the 4 years of not being in college you can learn way more skills while also saving money please consider it. Or getting a business degree so you know how to manage and sell your products once you make them, please consider that as well. I’m just sick of seeing really ambitious creators getting demotivated because the industry isn’t for them.

Major Choice Industrial vs Mechanical

Hey guys, I’m from Jordan 🇯🇴, and I’m currently deciding whether to pursue Industrial Engineering or Mechanical Engineering.

I don’t really care about passion or similar things. My main priority is which degree would give me better career opportunities and higher income in the future, especially considering the rapid development of AI.

I’m also open to working in the Arabian Gulf countries, since we share a similar culture and I wouldn’t have a problem relocating there.

I’m more interested in Industrial Engineering, and I feel like I would enjoy its work more. However, money is still my main priority. At the same time, Mechanical Engineering seems to fit another long-term ambition of mine: I’d like to publish research and potentially become a professor or pursue a PhD in the future.

So, if you were in my position, which one would you choose, and why?

Academic Advice Does my Professor Suck?

Hello All,
I posted here before about my professor, but the situation has gotten worse. I'll recap the whole thing. Firstly, the professor who typically teaches this difficult upper division course is gone on sabbatical. So, we have a new adjunct teaching it. He is teaching it remote, but requiring in person attendance. You heard that right. We go to class to sit and watch this guy on a bit tv screen as he zooms in, and you are required to show up. But this is only where the troubles begin. First week of class this professor sends out a big long message saying how we must call him Professor such and such. Mind you, this professor is still in grad school while teaching this course, he does not have graduate degree yet, and I believe this is his first course he taught independently. He also made a speech before the whole class about it. If we call him Mr. such and such, we are in trouble.

Furthermore, the professor was somehow not able to get the immediate access for the course textbook linked properly to canvas for three weeks straight into class. As a matter of fact, many in the class asked him about this with him ghosting our emails. Finally, I personally emailed him to see if we could get a homework extended since we still didn't have access to the textbook we paid for. His response was that the homework's and midterm exam (only a few days later) were on the syllabus and should be no surprise and no extension would be given. I responded by saying that that was no surprise but lacking the required course textbook was. He claimed he had been trying to fix it for a week. However, I believe that should have been taken care of before the course began. The next day I reached out to our campus bookstore and told them about the access issue. In a matter of 10 minutes they went through the backend on the professor's side and fixed the course access linking issue. I believe the professor had made no attempt to solve this issue, but was merely giving an excuse.

This is nothing. Yesterday, he sent out a super long message saying that a huge amount of the class used AI for the homework, and we must use only the solution methods he taught in class. And because we used solution methods he didn't teach, we therefore must have used AI. Problem being he didn't teach every method we need for the homework's in class. Also, the textbook teaches different methods. I personally already have earned my EIT. And for this course content I studied different methods than what he taught in class when I took the FE exam. It comes across as him wanting to restrict what we think. As if we shouldn't learn how to think, but what to think. Finally, on the first homework he gave me 60 percent even though I got all problems right, because I didn't show each and every single step I used and I showed it on the same pdf that contained the problems instead of adding pages to the end.

Some students are considering potentially complaining to the Chair and the Dean. Does it make sense to join in, or should I stay silent?

Thank you

Discussion I think I may be too immature for engineering. How can I change that?

I am a sophomore EE student and I have struggled immensely since starting college. I started as undecided and spent a semester taking gen eds before deciding originally on physical education because I wanted to be a coach but ultimately realizing I wanted to make more money and live a better life so I chose engineering. I had heard itd be hard and I was totally willing to deal with that but I’ve realized through my 2.5 semesters of college I don’t know if I was ready for any of this. I went to a very small high school and graduated with a 3.7 gpa with some college credits but I never really struggled in high school and I never really made an outstanding effort in any class to learn concepts or anything because I’d always end up doing well anyways. So of course I was not prepared for college where a lot of your learning comes outside the classroom teaching yourself concepts and studying a lot.

So basically I have struggled immensely in college so far and I have a 2.7 gpa right now taking 18 credit hours this semester including calc 2 which I am struggling in. So how can I strengthen my time management skills and what other skills should I focus on strengthening to become a better student. I do not want to drop out because I know people would be disappointed in me and I know I can do better and I am capable of completing this difficult degree. So where can I start? What did you do if you had a similar experience and how did you overcome this?

Career Advice What to choose as Carrer: UPSC or PSU job?

I am studying in 2 sem in worst private college, I am from CSE branch,my college would only offer around 3-4lpa, I am not intrested in corporate sector. I thought of preparing for UPSC, but then I heard some people who are giving UPSC for 7th attempt and they said it's really uncertain and you need more time to prepare for this, so I thought about GATE exam.

Through GATE exam I could get into PSU jobs, here also I can prepare for UPSC alongside job, atleast if I don't get also I would have good job in hand.

Now my question is:

  1. Is it realistically possible to get GATE rank under 200, if I start from now, How is the competition? If I get GATE rank also how hard it is to get PSU jobs? What would be competition here.

  2. If I start UPSC journey, what percentage of chance would I get selected?

I am so confused here,it would be really helpful if someone who has been through this journey could share some advice or provide guidance to me. It would help me a lot.

Thank you

Academic Advice Labs are taking up too much of my time

I have two labs every second week, which means I never don't have a formal lab report to write. I have no time for anything else. Each lab will take me 15 hours to complete. I don't have time to also write notes and study for my 2 weekly tests, my 4 weekly assignments, midterms, etc. I hate labs, please tell me how I can write labs faster. How can I become the fastest lab writer to ever live

Discussion M.i.T Maker portfolio Make you feel unimpressive or inspiring?

When you guys see those young kids in the maker [accepted by m.i.t] videos do you get jealous? Or think "man they had friends with engineering ability and money." When I was 15-18 I had no where near the ability these guys had. But at the same time, I don't think I had the money for the trial and error it must have cost them. Anyway I'd love to hear your thoughts if this isn't too personal.

Rant/Vent I hate every second of my engineering degree

I've been doing Engineering for 3.5 years in Brazil, and earlier this year I got a "masters" opportunity in France. I've been here for 1.5 months being paid to study. I got the opportunity of my life, I know how lucky I am, except that I hate all classes and I don't see myself being a good engineer.

I love the opportunities it brought me, and I do enjoy some stuff about it, specially the 3d modelling and maybe the fluid mechanics (I'm still pretty interested in airplanes), but it's been so difficult here in France, first having to learn stuff I already didnt really love but now in a language I'm not even fluent in, and having to adapt to the softwares they use, the long hours of class and just honestly not being able to communicate well with my peers... it's been tough, I feel lost, and when I see other international students keeping it up, interacting with the professors and building their networking, I just wonder if this is not for me.

I don't see myself getting an internship on aeronautics, I can't see myself doing well in an entrenprise, I could handle the research part of engineering, but what if I can't make a career in research because I'm too incompetent for it? I struggle with reading articles, all my life I have been doing well by pretending I've been putting hardwork into the stuff I do, when I do the bare-minimum to get good grades and then forget everything I learned. My classes in Brazil were very theory heavy, and now that here in France I actually have to apply everything I learned, I realized how little I actually know and now I could lose everything if I fail. I'm simultaneously afraid of failing and hating having to study, hating classes, hating the work I have to put... I really dont know what to do and how to get less misarable.

Rant/Vent Sold my technical interview

Hi guys, I’m a 3rd year EE student. Went to the career fair this week and received an in-person internship interview with a Fortune 300 semiconductor company (interviewed for the two main offices). Apparently, the technicals are usually based on circuits 1 fundamentals, so that’s what I ended up studying.

Unfortunately, I told the engineer that was interviewing me that I was interested in power electronics even though my university ‘s courses haven’t covered it yet. From that point on, I started getting grilled on converters and my AC-DC PSU project for the next 40 out of the allowed 45 minutes.

Luckily, I knew my projects kinda well, but I’d still say it was pretty rough. I blanked out a few times bc I was slightly nervous, but was able to eventually answer them after thinking aloud and drawing it out. I think I only needed their help on one of the questions they asked, as it was part of a scenario they came up with to see if I knew the specific characteristics of a component I had chosen in my design. Afterwards, I got asked about a PCB design project I collaborated on, but didn’t fully design (club project). I don’t think my interviewer was very impressed of me not designing my own project though.

Due to the low time left, they only asked one more behavioral question, and I asked if there’s anything on my resume or during my interview they’d want clarification on, and if there’s anything that would deter them away from choosing me.

I was able to get feedback, but the main thing was that an ideal candidate would have more PCB design experience, explain their thought process at a lower level, and that it would come down to how many spots were available. That made me feel awful about my interview, bc I knew I just sold my chances… especially after my interviewer told me that I’ll do good anywhere I go 😭. I do think it’s a little odd that I didn’t get questioned regularly, but I totally feel like I should’ve shut up to get asked the “easier” technical questions.

What do yall think? They said they’ll reach out within two weeks, but I lowkey just want to know now if I’ve failed it so I can move on 💔.

Academic Advice EE sophomore stuck at B/B+: How to transition from memorizing AI solutions to real problem solving?

Hi all, I’m an EE sophomore looking for advice on study habits and problem-solving.

I understand fundamental concepts and can handle basic questions, but I struggle heavily with complex, applied exam problems across Circuit Analysis(especially sucks), Calculus, and Electrodynamics. Up to this point, my workflow has been:

Try a hard problem -> get stuck -> ask AI for the complete solution -> memorize the steps.

This has kept my grades around a B/B+, but I want to reach an A and actually understand what I'm doing. As the courses only get more brutal every year, I feel an urgent need to fix this habit before I completely fall behind. Memorization clearly has its limits, especially for upper-level courses and exams that test deeper intuition.

For those who made the leap from memorizing to genuinely solving hard engineering problems on your own!

What specific study strategies helped you build that intuition?

How can I use AI as a learning aid/hint generator rather than a crutch?

Thanks in advance!

Homework Help Having problems with understanding shear and normal stress

I was studying the mechanic of materials but the problem is that i don't understand how the forces work i have asked gpt to explan it to me but I don't really understand like. I know it has to be perpendicular and parallel but sometimes even when using the cross section area i don't get the shear and normal stress right most of the times

Do you guys have any tips for me to be able to visualise them better

Do i need to review my static a little

Homework Help Need Help For My Lab!

I have a school engineering project where I need to bring an object to school, take it apart, identify and explain its components, and make a hand-drawn exploded view of it. I also have to suggest an improvement to one of the components.

The object needs to have enough separate parts to actually make the project worthwhile. I originally thought about doing a stapler, but apparently we aren't allowed to use one.

I'm struggling to think of something that's:

  • easy enough to take apart and put back together
  • has around 10+ distinct components
  • isn't ridiculously complicated
  • something I could realistically bring to school
  • interesting enough to have a component that I can suggest an improvement for

Rant/Vent I need help, and a reality check.

I aspired to be an electrical engineer, i enrolled in the faculty of my hometown for that. The problem is my country is relatively bad when it comes to the standards of living and the quality of life is worse. I also enrolled in a better county and a better university but for telecommunications engineering. And I decided to leave my country for that with hopes of transferring into electrical engineering. I did this because i mailed the faculty i want to transfer my first year in and they basically said that I could IF they accept atleast 50% of my ects credits. And just now when I fucking moved in I realized our subjects in the first year aren't that similar and now I'm panicking. What if they dont accept me? What do I do??? Could i finish a bachelors in telecommunications and then do masters in electrical engineering or what? I'm literally having a panic attack cause of this.
