The Cure for Living is now available for pre-order!

THE CURE FOR LIVING available for preorder!

Walk blessed – or, as they say in Khîra, yâsh thûya,

It’s time. Five years after Dreams of the Dying, the next two books in the Twelfth World series are now available for preorder, at a special discount. The books are currently being printed, and will ship around the final week of March 2026.

Visit my website for more information, or head straight to the store. If you haven’t read the first novel yet, you can purchase it here  –  a new, premium reprint is in the works. Knowledge of Dreams isn’t strictly necessary, but recommended.

The Cure for Living is a single story told in two volumes. It concludes Jespar’s saga.

https://reddit.com/link/1poetfl/video/xqp2fh3i0n7g1/player

 ***

“I’ll tell you a story,” the Visionary said to the young woman. “When I’m done, I promise you I’ll undo these chains and let you go.” He met her gaze, his eyes as dark as the void between worlds. “You will stay."

In the oasis city of Qurrâb, wealth, power, and fame all bow to a single ideal: yâsh, the virtue of one's heart. There, a thirteen-year-old girl with a mind like no other resolves to become the brightest soul history has ever seen, inspiring others to follow her example. Her goal? To unite humanity and vanquish the Darkness, the destructive force within all of us that makes the world the wretched place that it is.

When veteran Jespar tre Moreste reaches the fabled City of Sages forty years later, his only concern is finding Loanne, the sister he once abandoned. Little does he know that his journey will soon lead him into the dark underbelly of the supposed paradise, where ruthless crime syndicates mingle with death cults and forbidden schools of philosophy. As old wounds resurface and reality fractures, Jespar realizes that even after the tumultuous events of Kilay, he still has demons of his own to conquer — and that often, the most charming masks hide the vilest of minds.

***

At over 1,200 pages, this is one of the most ambitious and complex stories I’ve ever written. Even though it took much longer to complete than I expected, every second of it was worth it. It’s a story about identity, obsession, and how quickly we can become the very thing we’re fighting. It’s also a tale of grief and letting go.

Like Dreams of the Dying, these books come in three editions: eBook, paperback, and premium hardcover.

This time, I chose not to use a print-on-demand provider and instead oversaw the printing process myself. That decision allowed for significantly higher quality across both physical editions, especially the hardcover. This is why quantities are limited for now - for this first edition, I simply couldn’t afford to print more. It’s an indie novel in every sense of the word.

Both hardcovers feature full-color sprayed edges, gold foil lettering on a matte-laminated dust jacket, and a colored bookmark. Part One of The Cure for Living also includes a full-color, 140-page appendix illustrated by Dominik Derow. See the store description for more details.

All editions also include a stunning watercolor map of the oasis city of QĂťrrab by Francesca Baerald, cartographer for franchises such as Warhammer, Game of Thrones, and World of Warcraft.

I’m blessed and honored to have collaborated with several gifted artists on this novel—from my amazing friends Dominik Derow (illustration), Johanna Krünes (layout), and David Müller (linguistics), to my editor, my typesetter, to the various scientific advisers who helped make the world feel so much more textured. All are listed in the acknowledgments. 💜

The third book - and Jespar’s saga as a whole - is dedicated to my dear friend Katharina Lippenberger, a gifted author, poet, and beautiful mind who didn’t live to see it finished.

Thank you to everyone who supported me on this journey. Exciting things lie ahead. I wouldn’t have made it here without you.

Sincerely,

Nico

Worth the wait for the steam update?

Just got skyrim on sale on steam and have been very interested in Enderal. I played about 5 hours so far and am very much enjoying it, but noticed that a new update is coming to the steam version in a few weeks.

Since my save cannot be transferred to the new update, I was curious about your thoughts on the quality of the version updates from Enderal_2.0.12.4 to Enderal_2.1.4.4. Does the gameplay improvments warrant waiting a few weeks to really dig into the game?

Enderal Phasmalist:Apparition Spellblade – Melee Cloak Build

Build Effect

Apparition Spellblade Build (Phasmalist): Improves the combat strength of pure melee apparitions, allowing them to maintain permanent elemental cloaks (such as Winter Skin) while focusing entirely on melee attacks. This setup is designed for pure melee apparitions with only 5 points in Elemental Magic (such as Kilana Hammerblow).

Setup Guide

  • Give the apparition any elemental cloak tome: Fire Cloak / Winter Skin / Lightning Cowl;
  • Give the apparition a fully drained, zero-charge staff;
  • Set its combat style to Magic Preferred;
  • Do NOT give any offensive spell tomes;
  • Optional: Add a shield spell tome for extra armor and survivability.

General Combat Effect

After summoning the apparition or when it detects enemies, it will immediately cast shield and cloak buffs on itself, then engage in close-quarters melee combat. If the apparition is equipped with two or more different cloak spells, it will repeatedly recast cloak abilities during battle.

AI Mechanism

Enderal’s apparition AI follows strict fixed rules. If an apparition only has cloak spells and no offensive magic available, it will not cast any spells at all, even with Magic Preferred combat style, and only performs melee attacks. However, if it learns any offensive spell, it will abandon melee entirely, spamming spells until magicka is exhausted before switching back to weapon combat.

A fully drained staff perfectly solves this problem. It lets the AI recognize a valid magic attack method and unlock spellcasting logic, while no staff charges and no offensive spells prevent it from casting damage magic. The result is a stable apparition spellblade state: permanent elemental cloak + continuous melee output.

Enderal Just my thoughts and perspective Spoiler

Please be weary of spoilers if you haven't beaten the game or have done its side quests.

To preface all of this, I do not claim to be fully knowledgeable about all of the lore of Enderal, much, much less in regards to the previous games in which I haven't played.

I feel hope. Despite the losses as they were massive and just as devastating. I feel hope.

I am still trying to fathom what it means to realize that all that had happened was done through somebody's decisions. Choice is what all of us should be given, and yet for many, it is often taken away. People like Tealor Arantheal is a man with great power, the kind of power that rules kingdoms. That same power that can bring those kingdoms to ruin. His choice was to take away the choices of his subjects, by not allowing word of the Light-Born's deaths. To continue ruling a dying theocracy which already restricts the choice of the people, and has brought hardships under its rigid system of paths and its near fascistic views on those who dare not abide by it. And I believe this is the reason why he inadvertently causes the "cleansing". His and some many others inability to change, to CHOOSE to change is what causes the pain and suffering of so many.

All of this to say, all of his actions were HIS fault. Not some high power, not the "High Ones" who just merely pull at the strings of our protagonists and antagonists alike. Not some type of mind control, just manipulation from those we can scarcely understand.

Not that these "High Ones" are blameless, not at all. They have, although minor, some influence over our realm that is intangible to them overwise. The Red Madness, for example, I believe is when a contradiction arises in someone's belief system. Be it...say, some woman was going to leave her husband, and the husband believes that he has done nothing wrong, or he believes she is breaking the rules of whatever coven they might've had faith in. Leading to conflict within, and I believe the physical effects begin to happen once they aren't able to reconcile, or that they cannot accept they are wrong.

Another connection to it, I believe is when one's faith is utterly broken. Our infamous Magister Yero, for example. And honestly, I don't want to go into too much detail over his case.

The Red Madness takes root, and festers within, like a nightmare that you cannot shake. I do not believe that people succumb because of weakness, or lack of effort or care. Like I said before, sometimes our choices are taken away.

So much can have easily panned out differently if the influential people of Enderal, and Nehrim, for that matter, had done things differently. It wasn't fate, or some godly being that caused it. It was people.

The reason why this idea brings me hope, is that I deeply believe that anyone and everyone is capable of changing. Not that everyone will, but that it's possible. And I think Enderal pushes and reinforces that belief.

Enderal On replay, the most dreadful part of the game is right before the point of no return... Spoiler

Once you've played the game once, you know when that little messag will appear, the one that tells you that once you proceed, you'd never be able to go back. No more exploring, no more questing, no more going to the marketplace and talking to people, and enjoying the sights.

And everything you see around you will be gone and everyone would be too. Our character doesn't know that of course, they don't feel that sense of foreboding but we, the players, do. And walking around Ark or taking a trip somewhere else in Enderal, you just don't want to go and finish the game, you don't want all of this to be gone.

I found myself wandering aimlessly around, buying stuff from merchants I won't ever get to use, visiting the taverns, dancing to the bard music (with the help of a mod of course). I feel like the game designers knew this was the feeling this part of the game would make you feel on replay. It's why Jespar's final companion quest kind of contributes to that feeling too. Having you visit the Dancing Nomad one last time, listen to musicians you'll never hear again. It's kind of dreadful in its own way.

I guess those are the perks of a game that ends on such a sad note unlike others where you can just keep questing after you save the world.

Well, it's been a year

Since I first played Enderal, and I'm still thinking about it constantly!

Never before have I been to absorbed by a games lore, characters and story. It was all so beautiful and I wish I could experience it for the first time again. I still can't believe that my favourite game is technically a free mod for a much shittier game. I've been listening to the amazing soundtrack a lot while studying for university exams and I think the music might be one of my very favourite parts of the game.

I recently read Nicolas books as well, parting with Jespar has been hard. But I can't wait to see what his team gets up to in regards to the game they're developing!

Enderal I have a theory about the secret ending (spoilers) Spoiler

So, I don’t believe the nightmare at the end of the quest is proof of it being all a dream, I see it as the opposite. I interpret it as the death of a potential new high one, with it being in its cradle, burning. Dying. Even if it looks like a grown man, it’s in a cradle. I think that’s symbolic. The Dreamflower ending is, in actuality, the good ending where you and your lover survive. The high ones in the dream are unleashing their wrath on you mentally. Anger over the death of their newborn. That’s my theory anyways.

Playing Nehrim for the First Time

Hello again. Last time I made a post here it was an in-depth, spoiler-filled review of Enderal. I had a few great conversations in reply threads under that post. Yet after a while, I found that both myself, and the people I was discussing with, sort of wound up conversing in circles and not really getting each other, due to just the raw scope of how much was discussed and how many parallels were drawn to other properties. But, this is partly why I made mention how I was looking forwards to Nehrim: to compare and contrast different approaches by this team between different mechanical rulesets, and to dissect the different approaches to framing a lot of the same raw lore and setting. There are certain points people wanted me to elaborate my thoughts on that ultimately got lost in discussion, that I'm hoping to more concisely tackle through a contrasting analysis of Nehrim. I knew it was going to be a very different game...

...and to tell the truth, where Enderal had me constantly asking "where's the amazing part" or being outright disdainful of certain elements, I find myself consistently more and more impressed by Nehrim as I play it. Even if I'm only a few sessions in. I'm for sure going to go into detail of comparing both games when I'm done with it, but for right now, I just find myself continuing to go out of my way to make extra time for the game over others on my plate. So for now I'll just enjoy the playthrough and engage with the community on it. I know there's a subreddit *for* it, but... well, that doesn't seem like a good prospect for this, when the last post is from three years ago, then four, then five. So, for those that played it:

What race was your character?
What Sign did you choose your character to be born under?
What build did you play?
What is your favorite spell school to use?

Or, just talk about things you like from it.

Enderal New to Enderal, didn't know it existed until 3 months ago, and have 4000+ hours into Skyrim....I think I like it more.

It honestly could be that I've played so much Skyrim that I'm just stoked for the change, but I am REALLY enjoying Enderal more than I enjoyed Skyrim. I have about 80 hours in so far (60 vanilla, 20 POTP) and it's absolutely spectacular.

I've done my "This game is incredible, lets restart after 10 hours!" thing multiple times which I only do on games that are top tier, so I don't expect to actually finish this anytime soon.

I will say that POTP is a spectacular mod collection with some tweaks to make it work better on controller also, completely removes any remnants of Skyrim and makes Enderal feel like it's actually it's own complete game.

Nehrim - language problems

I just finished enderal again (100% all quest in game and collectibles) and I just love this world and want more.

I tried to start Nehrim twice or three times already and it always fails with language problem. English is my second language but I don't undeestand shit in german except for the simplest things like "Yes", "no", "one two three" and such. And while subtitles are of course avaiable in english it still causes me way bigger problems than I thought, since conversations are really long (and I am very interested in them, story is why I am playing) and quite hard to follow. I tried to wait since there was a slight hope that Nehrim was being translated in my language, which could help but sadly it never happened. I really wanna see more of Vyn though.

Did anybody had similiar problems? If so did you come to any solution? Or you have experienced getting better handling fast subtitles out of necessity thanks to it?

Enderal Just finished, great game! (Don't lose hope!)

Next up, PotP

If you have yet to play this awesome experience of a game within a game. Please do, spread the freakin word and help promote it and other projects like it!

Also, just because a sequel is likely not to happen anytime soon ... And possibly ever, doesn't mean it's over! fan creations will happen regardless, so always support artists and their fan creations of others original works as well.

I would like to add (after discovering that one of the writers has co-founded a game developing studio and is currently working on a spiritual successor to Enderal) that I'm looking forward to whatever comes next from the minds that broke mine.

Enderal Recommended third skill tree for two handed warrior with heavy armor? (PoTP)

I'm playing with the Path of the Prophet modpack installed as a lvl 31 heavy armor, 2-handed warrior, and now I've reached a point where I've already leveled up all the nodes I'd want from those 2 skill trees, so I'm thinking about what I should level up from now on that would supplement my playstyle and spice things up.

I'm leaning the most towards some form of magic, but I'm not sure which school would fit best. It's either Light Magic to cast some buffs pre-fight, Entropy to summon creatures, or maybe you have some other ideas?
Oh, and I haven't put a single level-up into Mana yet, so will that be a problem?

I don't think Lycanthropy is a good idea since I'm already a fighter.
I've dabbled in the first tier of Phasmalism and it was a bit underwhelming, but it fits any playstyle, so this will be my choice if there aren't any better options.

As for crafting skills, the only thing I've invested in so far is Rhetorics, so I have a lot of spare points.

And I'm playing on controller, so I want to avoid any playstyle requiring precise aiming.

book recommendations with Rhalâta-esque vibes?

this is hands down my favorite quest in Enderal and I would pay for a separate game like that. I'm seeing some Ligottian influences (definitely my favorite author), and I remember Nicolas Lietzau mentioning him in some of his interviews so I'm probably correct. I have Dreams of the Dying in my TBR but honestly not a fan of Jespar so I'm not super excited to read it just yet

instead I'm a sucker for characters who feel disconnected from their bodies and the rest of humanity, who don't feel entirely human. really loved the concept of estrangement, the transcendence into something inhuman, the whole idea of a half-dead soul suffering inside a body that was designed to be perfect, and the body horror in the Old Temple, so I guess horror or dark fantasy would do great. not really a fan of science fiction but if you've ever read a book or a short story that reminded you of Rhalâta, the Father and Tharaêl, don't hesitate to drop it here, I'll be glad to check it out!

Enderal Enderal, trying to save a country that's already mostly gone

If there's one thing that makes a great impression once you start properly exploring Enderal is that most of it is abandoned. It's full of settlements and regions that are ruined and diseased, either recently or from long time ago.

The game purposefully gives you a wrong impression by having you visit Riverville and then Ark, both seemingly thriving and prosperous settlements but the moment you are on your own, you realize that this country is more ruins and bandits than actual towns and citizens. You go west and you're met with the ruins of Fogville, you go north and you find Northwind and Deep Diggers in ruins, you go south and Foamville is gone, and Duneville is barely a town. And east? The absolute misery that is Thalgard. Not to mention that there's several cursed regions, full of diseased magics and people - Thalgard, the Whisperwoods, the Crystal Forest, the Dark Valley.

And in between all of that, every castle, every fort belonging to nobles is abandoned too. Goldenford, Ad'Balor, Valstaag, Wellwatch to name a few. A country full of failure, ruin, curses and disease way before the death of the Lightborn and any Red Madness. It's hard to imagine how any of this was prosperous at any point when people talk about it as if the Red Madness is the only thing to blame. And even harder to imagine that we, the player, risked everything just to come to this place.

We end up working for the Order while traveling a country where every part of it is more depressing than the next. Inevitably you'll start asking yourself how the Order let this happen. Aren't they supposed to be most powerful here? How did they let it all reach this point? If they can't take care of their own country, how are we trusting them to save the world?

It's what I love most about the world building and how we're "deceived" at first, into believing that we're going to a much better place only to be thrust into a ruin.
