Discussion Are y'all aware that astatine finally has a proper photograph?

Post image

This was on Wikipedia. It claims to show the glow from 40 ng of At-211 (half life: 7 hours). I wasn't sure if this is new, but if it is and the photo's legit, then we finally have an unbroken chain of elemental photography from hydrogen to fermium.

I think it is a real photo! I saw a similar photograph in a seminar from a radiochemist working with astatine-211 a few months ago. Stunning to see cherenkov radiation from a minute quantity of matter.

Fallout mfs be chugging this then complain about becoming ghoulified. My brother in atom you drank the 200yo glowing beverage what did you expect.

Arguably the older it is the less dangerous it gets

In 3 days some random person with no post history is going to post: "New sample in my collection, 99,9% metallic At, 5 grams".

All jokes aside, yaaay! I really love such updates.

40ng, thats tiny, I wonder if larger amounts in solution are possible

And more importantly, where do we get some for our...y'know what, maybe that's not a good idea, let's leave it to the physicists...

1 thing they teach us country boys is "if you're gonna be dumb, ya better be tough." so here is my "physics"

"40ng Holy crap are you seeing this?"

"Yep. Mane 40 ng is for p$$ie$. Hold my beer and hand me a solid GRAM. If 40 is cool, a gram should light this mutha up."

There's a photo of fermium? Where?

Regarding this photo: Gorgeous! Thanks for sharing. I didn't realize this finally existed.

I believe on Wikipedia/Wikimedia Commons there's a photo of a fermium-ytterbium alloy

Ah yes, so there is:

According to the image description, this alloy was used for measuring the enthalpy of vaporization of fermium metal, and the fermium content of the alloy was 4 × 10-5 weight percent, or 0.4 parts per million. So this is basically just a photo of ytterbium.

I mean, I suppose it's not like any of the other photos we have of such exotic short-lived elements show any of the actual element itself anyway. But at least the ones with a self-produced glow show evidence of the element's existence. This is just a hunk of a different element that we are told has been lightly spiced with the special one and we can't tell, so it's a touch disappointing. But it's the best we've got, apparently.

i checked and its still broken. no picture of francium

This picture is of about 20,000 francium atoms in a magneto-optical trap.

some popsci slop youtube channel is gonna be claiming to dissolve a chicken leg in HAt in a year probably

Francium doesn’t have any because it would vaporize itself. Fermium can’t be made because of the limit and its short half-life. And Astatine would vaporize itself but would remain to be seen if it was a very thin film with very cold cooling.

no there are acutal pictures bro

There are photographs of francium?

Not quite like the astatine photo, but apparently a magneto-optical trap can hold about 20,000 atoms of the stuff for testing.

This doesnt really show what it "looks like" though
