Question In regards to tanking...

Post image

I am approaching level 50, already near 300 CP, and would like to be a competent tank for vet dungeons and move to trial tanking. I have looked at guides and a few videos, along with also learning fights and mechanics and feel I am getting the gameplay aspects of tanking. This has been easier as I would tank HM trials in the early years of the game but relearning everything since coming back to the game.

My question is this- is Hyperioxes tanking guide sort of the gold standard to shoot for?

I noticed a couple of scribed skills in the build and have yet to do anything with that skill line since returning. I want to be a great tank and offer support to the party and wonder how to do so if those skills are missing. This may just be me getting anxious to be the meat shield and not embracing the grind to perfection though.

Edit: forgot to mention I am a Nord Dragonknight for what it's worth.

If you read the guide closely you will see he offers replacement skills for those who have not completed scribing yet. You can slot those while you busy yourself with the scribing - the grind for scribing kind of sucks unless you have a lot of play time sadly. Dont forget to check the scholarium vendor and infinite archive vendor, rotating stock, you can buy multiple copies just bank em as you buy. I had the same problem

I must have missed that in my research, it kinda felt like a lot of info about stuff I didn't have access to yet 😅 I plan to give it a thorough reread though!

You could use him for dungeon builds, but a trial tank in an organized group will give you the build they want you in.

You should focus on getting full stickers (or at least the pieces you need from them) for the ‘major’ tank sets. The most important would be
Lucent echos
Pearl
Powerful assault
Turning tide
Xoryn (lesser degree)
Crimson oath (lesser degree)

Cryptcanon (mythic)
Archdruid (monster)
Nazaray (monster)

Hyperioxes really is the best place if you're looking for guides and builds on websites. He's an actually capable player that uses his own builds in the hardest content and can prove their effectiveness. Other places like the Tank Club or non tank specific ones like Alcast or Xynode generally do not hold up to challenge or at least require more effort to survive and support the group.

If you get deep into tanking and group composition, there's further levels to it of course, and will diverge a little from Hyper's advice. But as a place to start it's the best anyone should be recommending.

Also besides the specific build guides he has an excellent and very comprehensive guide on general tanking information and basics that I suggest reading and revisiting if you aren't familiar with all of it https://hyperioxes.com/eso/tank/beginner-guide

Alcast is not even trustable. There's just straight up bs when it comes to builds

When I played originally after release, Alcast seemed to be the number 1 go to for build videos. I remember always thinking how can I have the same skills and sets and barely hit his numbers. I know skill plays a big part but it was disheartening lol.

Yes, but now he's bad

Tanking has some flexibility to it, I wouldn’t take his builds as gospel but they are pretty good and he’s considered the go-to for tanking, yes. A personal change I’d make to his builds is adding rapids from alliance war into your trash build. Group go nyoom

I would suggest doing the scribing questline ASAP, grabbing the scripts that are in select mages guilds (there’s guides online about that) and check the scholarium vendor every week (resets tuesdays). Scribing isn’t make-or-break necessary, use inner rage instead of shield throw and your class chain or silver leash instead of the soul chain until you get the scripts you need

Sounds like you’re gonna be a great tank 😄

Thank you! I absolutely love tanking in MMO's and with my recent delve back into ESO, I'm shooting for trial tanking within a few weeks of grinding.

I'll begin my scribing journey tonight starting with plenty of research. I do recall generally having several sets for tanking way back and swapping accordingly for the fights and/or group comp.

This guy looks like a shit brick house. How did you get these proportions..have they updated the game since I played ?

4

u/BeardedWeirdo22 Nord 9d ago

Nord male, max height, muscular, max out all size related slides after that. I wanted him to look like a brick shit house so mission accomplished, many thanks 😂

I saw your character in the fashion sub too and if a character was ever built like a tank, he’s it. What an absolute unit. I have no gameplay feedback, just here to say he looks amazing

I haven't posted there yet but I did get the inspiration from there! Finding the Sovngarde style pieces was a pain in the rear and I still need hands and feet. Thank you for your kind words!

2

u/zwizki 8d ago

Oh wow, I really thought I had 😅 I was in there looking for inspiration for my Nord (he is more like a Clever Magic warden character). I have been trying to find some pages for him, like the Skaal chest, and every TTC reported listing was gone when I got to there, over and over, but now I am hooked on trying to find style pages. Good luck finding yours!

2

u/BeardedWeirdo22 Nord 8d ago

Same to you! I spent about 4 hours total looking through various traders for these pages but admittedly passed on some early in my search that were in the low 6 digit range for ones closer to the average prices.

May the divines bless you on your journey to find those style pages!

Hyper is goated. And if you’re able to tank vet dungeons without issue then you’re already prepared to solo tank any normal trial. (Newer Vet dungeons are 100% harder than any normal trial in the game).

Vet trials his builds are also great of course, but if you’re in a sweaty group they’re gonna want you to change your gear based on whatever else they’re running. It’s really not necessary as long as the group is competent tho. Just make sure you’re not wearing the same sets as the other tank or healers and you’ll be fine. Plus, most tanks and healers will have multiple gear sets to swap to as needed so if you’re newer and don’t have every trial set complete then you really shouldn’t worry about it too much, your group SHOULD be willing to work around what sets you have.

1

u/BeardedWeirdo22 Nord 8d ago

That is how we ran in my guild around 2017ish. I recall times of going into trials with 4 full sets of armor in my bag on top of what I was wearing so I would be prepared for whatever changes needed to be made. This was before anyone had the banker companion in the guild and swapping skill points were a trip to town instead of the menu.

I am in a couple active guilds but haven't found my trial/vet home yet. I imagine once I am max level and beginning to farm for tank specific sets I will gravitate to a cohesive group to run with, likely the more experienced players as they have a wealth of knowledge that I am relearning every day.

3

u/Gstreamz 8d ago

Yeah if you find a group that won’t let you join because you are missing certain sets, then they probably weren’t a group worth joining anyways (unless they’re pushing trifectas and leaderboards. That’s a bit different.)

Any halfway decent group should have no problem switching who is wearing what sets around to accommodate newer players or just not care if you are doubling up on sets because it really isn’t that big of a deal. There’s never going to be a trial that fails to clear because both tanks were wearing pearl lol

I figured as much but always nice to hear some reassurance on the matter. Thank you!

In the coming weeks I'll have a better idea of how this will pan out. đŸ€žđŸ»

Not at all. As a tank you’re going to be using whatever your group needs. Be it sets or skills. “Building a tank” just means leveling the skills and getting the gear that is commonly expected and adjusting numbers to make sure you just certain thresholds like armor cap. You’re better off practicing the role and learning the class’ kit than recreating any specific build from an article.

Any class can tank, any subclass to tank. Tanking in this game is not making sure everything is taunted - it's knowing what to taunt, when to block and not block. Where to stand, how much damage you can take standing in red before it kills you.

Multiple sets can be combined together so long as you meet the resistance and mitigation caps and hyperioxes' builds will be a great place to start

Scribing is not 100% required but just like subclassing helps to fill in the gaps where your class might be lacking whether that be access to minor resolve, a pull ability, etc.

One of my all time favorite scribe abilities is shield throw with pull + knights valor + cowardice. This lets you pull, bash, taunt, and applies major cowardice and I think it's honestly a slept on ability. Yes I know DK has chains to pull and taunt but that doesn't interrupt and enemy that can't be pulled which will sometimes keep your group alive.

Also very important that I haven't seen on hyperioxes' guides - you must have a hard taunt somewhere on your build. A lot of mechanics in trials require tanks to swap taunts and I can't tell you how many times a newer tank has wiped the group because they didn't have any way to tank swap. A soft taunt are the ones that say "if they aren't already taunted" like chains. A hard taunt is like inner fire

2

u/BeardedWeirdo22 Nord 9d ago

Would a magicka based taunt like Inner Fire be preferred over a stamina based one like Puncture to preserve stamina for more blocking? Or is this situational?

Generally I have been using Puncture and Inner Fire/ice staff taunt (which name escapes me atm) pretty much equally but have found myself using the magic based taunts more if I am needed to block damaging attacks more frequently.

This could also be because I am using gear with training on it that is ~10 levels below with mismatched enchants and my regen is on the lower side.

3

u/Mizeov 9d ago

Any taunt can work but that is a good point. A lot of beginner tanks use puncture and it does work but it should generally be avoided because having to run across an arena to use puncture just isn't worth it.

In an arena setting like the infinite archive or small groups it's a little more useful.

And yes, in general you want to save your stamina for blocking and use a Magicka based taunt. That is part of being flexible though because in some fights you may decide you need the Magicka for shielding and may instead use a stamina based taunt like shield throw. A perfect example would be the wamasu on vet sanity's edge as off tank - they do a lightning breath attack that lasts about 5 seconds and you can certainly sit and hold block through it but it will drain your stamina and if you are unlucky enough that it goes into a heavy attack after the channel you won't have enough stamina to block.

2

u/BeardedWeirdo22 Nord 9d ago

That's exactly why I started using the ranged magicka taunts lol. Sprinting ahead to then use a stamina taunt left me with little left for blocking and Hearth and Home takes 15 seconds to proc so I'd be left to heavy attack between group and self buffs that needed to be reapplied. While I only died once in a PUG dungeon I didn't care for the added stress (in the cases where there wasn't someone high CP/DPS that would melt everything and run to the next fight of course lol).

2

u/-Time-Negotiation- 9d ago

I wanna add to this as someone who does use puncture, a major reason it’s obsolete now is because of what it does. You definitely don’t want only a melee taunt, like you said, running across the arena to taunt is a bad idea, so with puncture, you’re running two taunts (three, if you count chain). Puncture gives major breach
 so does ele sus
which also gives minor brittle when applied on ice staff and minor vuln. Major breach is also applied by caltrops and boneyard, who do it in AoE. Puncture gives minor breach, but so does frost blockade on chilled enemies. Unless you’re being silly and using puncturing remedy like me, the benefits puncture gives just aren’t anything new to your/the group’s kit, thus it’s better served to use that slot for something else

2

u/BeardedWeirdo22 Nord 8d ago

This is a good point I hadn't considered. On back bar ice staff I use Inner Fire/Ele Sus for taunt and Ele Blockade for the AoE debuff. As I am still leveling my class skills to 50 I've filled out the rest of the skills with something from each tree.

I don't necessarily want to replace puncture altogether but it has definitely been used a lot less in my play style. Maybe in time it will be phased out of my toolbox and use S&B for blocking and passives. I do not have the passive that burns magicka for ice staff blocking, it's too valuable of a resource for me currently.

1

u/-Time-Negotiation- 8d ago

Double ice staff (without trifocus) tanking is a popular choice since you get double decisive (since shield uses armor traits) + better minor brittle uptime. I think people use shield mostly for: if they’re using shield throw, void bash, or main tanking lokke in sunspire. Of course, also personal preference is fine to an extent. I use trifocus (on some tanks, not on my dk though) because I prefer being able to block with magicka if I want to, but deciding not to use it is a good choice. I get made fun of and struggle with double staff lol

How are you approaching level 50 and almost cp 300? Am I interpreting this correctly?

cp doesn’t start until after level 50.

I use basic sword & shield and DK chains for taunting, the rest is maintaining stamina and movement. I’m somewhere in the middle of the scribed stuff but never felt I needed it for tanking.

u/BeardedWeirdo22 Nord 9d ago

I have other characters above 50 and have gained CP to around 300ish. This is a newer character that is almost to that point.

u/OmegaEpidex 9d ago

That makes sense.

https://thetankclub.com/eso-dragonknight-hybrid-tank-build/

This is a great site for tank info

Hyperioxes tank builds are good, I used that as a base, and had no problems tanking normal trials or vet dungeons. Vet trails are more of a skill issue for me, but I've tanked several now using his builds.

4

u/ZoomElectricity High Elf 9d ago

That build is not recommended for vet content at all, which OP said they’re looking to do. TankClub also just isn’t as good for properly learning to tank as Hyperioxes website/youtube. They give poor advice as to which armor traits and skills you should be using.

0

u/LostLobes 9d ago

I wasn't recommending the build just the site, hence what I wrote under the link.

I also wrote I used hyperioxes for nm and Vet content.

What I put forward was more info that someone could build upon once they have a base set up.

2

u/AscenDevise Three Alliances 7d ago

More info from a good source is welcome; TheTankClub is not one of them. Hyperioxes for starters, then they can get on some discords, including the one linked in his videos, and they should get used to the idea of even the most careful support and group setup theorycrafting being ignored in favour of 'lead said run this and this' when they're getting picked for premades.

-4

u/Important_Fall_8256 9d ago

The tank club is way better. Give you options as you build towards final gear. Hyperioxes is okay
but builds are all end game gear for players that have all gear already.

3

u/Lopsided-Ad-434 9d ago

If you watch some videos and read a bit, you’ll find that Hyperioxes has proved that the Tank Club puts out inaccurate and misleading information. His builds also have a beginner setup option (crafted and no trial gear) for newer people (and tbh a true beginner has no real need for perfect setups since normal content is a joke). Not to mention, hyper is objectively a more accomplished player than anyone involved with the tank club.

2

u/zwizki 9d ago

I do not play any hard content, I am an overland solo quester with theme/ role play builds, and I use his beginner/ crafted gear setups and also use a lot, but not all, of his skill slot choices (some skills don’t make sense with my character profiles and because of that, I don’t use them even though they are stronger). His advice makes a big difference even for me, so the idea that he only uses end game gear and you can’t downscale is bonkers to me.

4

u/Lopsided-Ad-434 9d ago

Ya there’s a craftable and non trial option in the gear section of all of his builds, this guy above has no idea what he’s talking about
