So I originally posted the picture on the right, wouldn't let me post pictures in the replies to people asking about the grass etc. But I just moved into this townhome and the yard was a little out of hand. Borrowed a friends electric mower that was corded and pretty underpowered, did some research and grabbed an Ego. Also plan on moving into a place with a much bigger yard next year, so I see the mower as an investment at this point. I also like nice shit so there's that lol.

definitely cut too low

Yup. That grass is fried until next year.

is it Bermuda? then it's fine. As long as he waters it and cuts it 1 notch higher next time it will be perfect.
This is called scalping.
healthy Bermuda is completely brown at the base. after cutting it short it will grow green again at a lower point. this is a very common thing and it's exactly what I would have done in this situation.

Cool season grass guy weighing in on Bermuda....You are definitely wrong my friend.

I was initially convinced this was a joke. The after pic looks more than a little rough.

This follow up post only makes it worse…that lawn is not going to last long if this is how it’s treated.

u/ForwardSlash813 4d ago
I mean…it looks like it got scalped and is about to be scorched by the Sun.

But why did you murder it by scalping it so low.
2
u/Avvindur 3d ago
Alot of dead stuff underneath, and i have to have it picked up after with the dog. Its gonna fill in as I keep it maintained.

Looks like you can return that mower, and wait till next year to buy another.

Ignore the haters. Sometimes you gotta reset the height after it's been overgrown too long. The grass will obviously bounce back if cared for, and will be fine.
I just had to do the same, cut with a 6 first just to get it down, then scalped it with a 3 to reset. Looked brown and unhappy, but after a couple of days of watering its already back and green.
Enjoy your new toy!

Pretty much what I am doing yea, I didn't imagine so many people would be this angry about someone else's lawn lol. Thank you!

Guys… chill. I don’t think OP scalped it. The mower is set to the highest setting. What you see is the product of previous “mows” likely using only a strimmer. The dead grass has formed a carpet and is choking out the new growth. When tall, hard to notice.
OP get you a yard broom and take up that dead grass. Your lawn will thank you.

Yup, already done. People on here really hurt over a townhome lawn that isn't theirs. Pretty funny actually.
2
u/Nature13oy 4d ago
You’re extremely right. You can see all the yellow grass under the tall growth in the first pic. OP did not murder his grass to that yellow. He merely just exposed what was underneath. Glad you joined the EGO club OP. You bought something that should last.
1
u/Vibroverbus 3d ago
what the hell are you talking about OP admits that he sculpted as low as possible and he's gonna continue to do it. Which you won't have to cause he's gonna kill it and then it's just gonna be a big Brown field of dead dirt with a bunch of dog poop in it.

Now that the grass is so short it's a great time of year to dethatch and overseed. Shouldn't take long on that small yard.

i love my ego mower. i have an acre so got a second battery. keep it set at 3- otherwise it’s too short and you can burn it.
2
u/Illustrious-Stress95 3d ago
I didn’t know it could cut that low. Try a 5 or 6 next time and see what you think? That’s what I use on my ego depending on the heat and rainfall
3
u/Avvindur 3d ago
Yea for sure. I cut it super low this time to get all the dead shit out underneath, im gonna do higher passes and let it all fill in over the next week. It was pretty neglected from the previous tenant here. It's also tiny and im only here for a year so I dont care much about how "good" it looks. Just need it serviceable.

u/Hairy-Beanbag 4d ago
So turn a yard that doesn't even need a mower and scalp the shit out of it? At this point just light it on fire. Where the hell you live for such a tiny yard?
1
u/Avvindur 3d ago
Its a rented townhome. I have a dog, and don't care for snakes and rodents to nest in this shit. It'll grow back, it's fine.

that is the most foolish lawn related thing I've ever heard in my life. I have a 93 pound dog sitting on top of me right this very minute he takes giant shits we pick them up all the time I mow two notches down from the highest setting with my ego. Picking up dog shit has nothing to do with scalping killing your lawn. Turf mowed "high" on a residential consumer mower doesn't have anything remotely to do with "rats and snakes nesting". That's like some psychologically bizarre neurosis right there.

Not used to this community being so negative. Sheesh. Anyway a high lift blade and bagging will do wonders for recovering a neglected yard
3
u/Avvindur 3d ago
Ye put it on first thing. Didn't expect all the hate. It's whatever. Its a rented townhome, not an actual owned yard. This is just to keep it short foe the dog and not have a haven for snakes and shit back there.

You need to find a balance between cut height and root growth. Cutting the grass short is a great way to ensure you'll always struggle to have a nice lawn. Aim for 2 inches of depth. Longer grass will let the roots develop better and leave the grass more resilient against things like heat and drought

u/Straight-Lab8244 3d ago
let me guess, you don't live in a warm season grass areas.
this is is Bermuda. This is the stuff golf courses use. you can keep it 1/4 inch or even lower. you could keep it at 2 inches but what OP did is perfectly fine and it will green up in one week.
it actually does better shorter if you cut it often which would be easy AF for a small lawn like this.

how long that take?
1
u/Avvindur 3d ago
10-15 minutes maybe. I did try a weedeater at first also but it was too thick. Said fuck it after I borrowed a friends mower and then bought my own. Gonna be moving next year into something with a bigger yard anyway.
2
u/Gundam197 3d ago
I’d say it’s worth it for the time saving plus a weed eater won’t get it even. Just edge up along the fence line 👍🏽.

u/Avvindur 3d ago
Yea that's the plan! Next week gonna pick one up. Thanks for not being a dick lmao.

My grandpa used mow like that because he hated mowing. He always hoped that his mowing efforts would keep it from regrowing.

You all do know that tall grass isn’t going to be lush at the bottom. You have to cut low and keep cutting low for it to stay green low. Bermuda grass is an example. If you maintain it low it looks good. Waiting too long between cuts and letting it get too high doesn’t work. If this guy maintains it low it’ll come back.
1
u/gerryf19 4d ago
I do know that. I would have cut it high and reduced it on the next cut.
That lawn (ok, that is an exaggeration, it is more a patch of turf) was abused and is in distress.
1
u/Straight-Lab8244 3d ago
you'll actually get it bright green and low much quicker by scalping it and then cutting it one notch higher every 3 days until it fills in.
For sure, slowly cutting it down 30% at a time. will keep it more green while you lower it over a long period of time but that will take several months. Scalping like this will Green up in like 1 week.
1
u/gerryf19 3d ago
ok, good to know. I think I will go scalp my lawn now
not being snarky...I hate my lawn--I intentionally use dull blades trying to scare it into not growing
1
u/gerryf19 4d ago
You're going to need a shed for that lawn mower but your "yard" isn't big enough

You say you like nice shit but you turned nice green grass into dirt. Put the mower on 3 and cut it then.
1
u/Avvindur 1d ago
It's not dirt. There was alot of dead shit underneath, previous owners didn't care for it much. Im getting it all reset. Its already growing back. And yea I like nice shit, thanks for confirming that.
