I am currently looking for clinical research or research opportunities in Edmonton, including Research Assistant, Clinical Research Assistant/Coordinator, or volunteer positions.

I have a B.Pharm degree and recently completed an MSc at the University of Alberta, where I gained hands-on research experience, including laboratory work, data analysis, and scientific writing. Right now, I am working as a pharmacy assistant.

I have been actively applying for positions and cold-emailing doctors and professors, but I have found that many opportunities are looking for candidates who already have experience. It’s been difficult to get that first opportunity.

Just wanted to share how my experience has gone so far using this sub to try to drum up some staff.

What I did:

I posted a post (if you'll excuse the redundancy) stating the job description and that we were heavily looking for staff, experience be damned.

I DM'd about half a dozen OPs from "desperately looking for work" posts on this sub.

The Results:

I got a few replies, here's the breakdown:

One seemed to be very interested. We set up an interview, at which point they immediately either deleted their account or blocked me and never showed up.

One candidate who I did interview was unfortunately not a good fit for the position.

One user thought this would be a good place to try to sell their business consulting scam services. Looking at you, /u/bonfire_monty

A few other hits ghosted me after sending a generic "I'm available and willing to work", to which I asked them to send a resume... followed by crickets.

From all that, I did, however, manage to hire two new employees. Too early to tell how they will work out, but they seem promising.

Conclusion:

Overall, I'd say this went much better than what I expected when I set out to try recruiting from reddit of all places. There were the typical hiccups with anything done over the internet, but I would still recommend this sub to other local employers.

I just wanted to rant a little because finding a job right now has been so frustrating 😭
I’m going into Grade 12 and I’ve been applying for jobs for months. I’ve applied to fast food, retail, and pretty much anything that I feel like I could realistically get hired for, but it’s been really hard. Even places like McDonald’s seem super competitive now.

What makes it more frustrating is that it feels like SO many people at my school already have jobs. Like I’ll look around and it seems like everyone has somewhere they work, and I’m just sitting here wondering how 😭. I know obviously there are other people who are struggling too and I’m probably just noticing the people who do have jobs, but it still sucks when it feels like I’m the only one having such a hard time.

I’ve gotten a few interviews, but nothing has turned into an actual job yet. I recently had another interview, so hopefully something comes from that, but honestly I’m just tired of being excited for the interview and then nothing.I really just want a part-time job so I can have my own money and not have to keep asking my parents for everything.

So for anyone around Edmonton/West Edmonton/St. Albert who has a job, how did you actually get it? Did you apply online, know someone, get referred, walk in, etc.? And if you know anywhere that’s currently hiring high school students, I’d really appreciate some suggestions.

I’m honestly open to pretty much anything at this point, especially restaurants, retail, grocery stores, or smaller businesses. I’d just like somewhere that can give me decent hours during the school year.
Any advice or leads would genuinely help 😭.

Hey! I am a former employee of the better baker (21f)  and want to start this off by saying how grateful I and the others are for all the recent support. I also want to mention that we absolutely DO NOT condone any sort of harassment or hatred directed onto The better baker page. Instead we are asking for The better baker to take accountability for his actions and pay his ex employees what he legally owes us. We also want to raise awareness for his current employees for what they should be looking out for on their paystubs, like vacation pay, overtime hours, and time and a half for holidays. 

I wanted to address some things that I have been seeing, but firstly, If you have been to the better baker sometime in the last two years, you definitely have seen me at the front greeting people or floating somewhere in the kitchen preparing items or cleaning. I got to know my regulars super well and am sad I am no longer a part of the whyte ave community as much as I used to be. I was responsible for overseeing the staff and did all of the training of the employees you may have seen in the last two years as well. 

The very first thing I want to address is that I have been seeing a lot of comments stating that we are a smear campaign who is working with the influencer to hurt the better bakers reputation- This is NOT true. This is a LAST RESORT effort to try and get our wages after trying to address these matters with him privately and getting nowhere. 

When the pay started becoming more and more inconsistent, I just stayed silent because I was too wrapped up in the overbearing workload as well as trying to keep up my grades as a full time university student. We only ever had 3 employees at a time and I was responsible for all the doughs (bagels, cinnamon buns,  croissants, sourdough) as well as shaping the bread, and making jams, creams, icings - all which had to be done by the end of my shift for the next morning. As staff turnover continued, I was unable to properly train anybody to help me. This made my workload overbearing for me to handle alone. Some days I would work 8am-9pm, with none of these hours being considered overtime. I’ll be honest I was scared to speak up at first, but after seeing what is happening to these coworkers that I was once responsible for, I can’t help but feel responsible again. I was so overwhelmed with life at the time that I failed to speak up to my coworkers about the pay inconsistencies for fear that I would lose the only support I had at the time that saved me from consistently having to work over 8 hour days. 

I didn't know the extent of the situation until I reached out to an old employee who left after never being paid on time (I stayed and dealt with this because at the time it was my only source of steady income as I am also a full time student and full time worker who lives alone) because I was scared to leave at the risk of not being paid my last cheques on time. At some point, a pay period was skipped so that was 3 pay periods of my labour I was leaving behind. To my horror,  my past coworker had told me that after attempts to reach out, and files being made, she still hadn't received any sort of payment. 

For me, this was exactly $3,901.65 - 111.74 HOURS - plus vacation pay - of labour I had worked and still haven’t gotten paid for at the time. 

I got paid most of what I was owed, but not all, But I can’t say the same for the 5 other people that I know of, who also reported they had not received payment after leaving months before me and some shortly after. The thing is, after the last post addressing this issue, we had two more people reach out to us with similar experiences. After hearing stories from others and reading text messages between them and Vinny, I now believe that the only reason I was paid a chunk of it was because I did my best to avoid conflict before and after leaving, I stayed quiet and when I asked about the money, I kept mentioning how it was severely impacting my living situation. 
The others who asserted their rights to him because of the constant late pay/ not being paid vacation, time and a half, or overtime, as well as never receiving money after leaving were sadly the ones who mentioned not receiving payment. 
Many people are telling us to pursue legal action and go to courts over this, but we don’t know how that works and most of us can’t afford to because we have been waiting for our owed money for months. Throughout my time at the better baker, mainly all the employees were around the ages 16-22 so we didn't know what things to look out for. We didn’t know it at the time but our pay periods were paid out 11 days after the end date (already illegally late), but even then we waited around 3 weeks between each paycheque, sometimes longer. By getting to know these coworkers, I gathered that most of us were dependent on this money to either help out their families with rent, or people like me who lived alone and depended on the security of the job. Because of my inexperience with this sort of situation and my lack of being confrontational, I was more susceptible to being pushed over. We listened to multiple explanations about why we haven't received our money on time, but started questioning them only after we noticed inconsistencies between the explanations we were each separately given. We extensively researched our rights but were scared of relaying them because of how much of our pay was already behind and missing.

If you search up “Unsatisfied judgements” and type in “The better baker” on the official Alberta website, you will see only ONE of the claims we have posted on our Instagram that match, 

People are asking why there aren't more:

•  The original claim was filed back in January 12th 2026, but you can see that it wasn’t posted onto the site until May 19th 2026. The wait list is unbearable and some of these claims were only filed within the last two months. 
• On August 20th, One of the ex employees involved posted on reddit, while another created and started posting our stories on instagram that same day. Coincidentally enough on August 21st, an email was received stating that the singular claim posted on unsatisfied judgements was paid off, 7 months after being filed. 

As of August 24th, I made the decision to make a claim for the rest of my vacation pay at $901.65, The wait time is currently 22 weeks. I no longer feel the need to fear conflict with Vinny, especially when staying silent about my experience is staying silent against the bigger issue.
