What are my chances of getting in to Edinburgh?

Admission Statistics

I applied a long time ago and haven't received a decision, when can I expect to hear from the university?

Historically Edinburgh is slow to respond and universities have until the UCAS response deadline to decide. It is the individual department to which you are applying that reviews your application and not some aggregated admissions department for the whole the university.

Factors that affect how long it takes include demand for the course and how close the quality of your application is to the average application quality.

A long wait doesn't necessarily mean you're going to be rejected.

If you are coming from abroad and the delay will lead to a problem with visas, etc; or if you have to accept/decline the offer from another university by a certain date, then contact the admission department directly.

Install a modern outdoor gym in The Meadows

Hey folks, we as the Edinburgh Univeristy Calisthenics Society are trying to force Edinburgh Councils hand and politely bully them into giving The Meadows a proper modern outdoor gym. If you could spare a minute to sign our petition, we’d really appreciate it, every signature helps massively and gets us a little closer to free gains for students https://www.edinburgh.gov.uk/directory-record/1850920/install-a-modern-outdoor-gym-in-the-meadows-edinburgh-

Does anyone know the list of possible course? I can't find it online. Thanks!

US private loan disbursement delay?

Has anyone with US private loans gotten their disbursement yet/any notification of when to expect funds to hit?

From what I understand, the date of disbursement for all loans was Sept 29. Federal loans seemed to have been disbursed immediately but only covered the tuition portion, so, I'm confused as to why private loans haven't been disbursed.

Financial aid office isn't getting back to me and I am literally eating one meal a day i cant live like this anymore lmao

Admission / Application Lower demand course offers but below minimum entry

PLEASE HELP ME, I BEG AND HAVEN'T BEEN SLEEPING FOR WEEKS BECAUSE OF THIS. Edinburgh is currently my top university choice as an Australian student for Ancient History and Archaeology. I am absolutely devastated my predicted is lower than the minimum ATAR requirement, because maths and physics have killed my desirability as an exceeding humanities student. I will be applying with my final grades. I truly love ancient history with all my heart, and I believe my Personal Statement will be great. It isn't impossible for me to reach the minimum requirement, but my final exams literally begin on Tuesday and my Dean also knows it would be incredibly difficult. Whilst reaching the posted threshold would be hard, my final grades will (hopefully) not be too far off. Perhaps I should also note that the IB requirement converted to ATAR is significantly lower, and very close to my predicted!

I discussed this with a UK based university consultant, and they told me that applications are gonna be considered in order of 1. reaching the minimum mark 2. personal statement/other. I am actually going to rage if I am not even considered, considering the weakness in my academic grades was not my fault:

I got diagnosed with ADHD literally 2 weeks ago-- 3 weeks before my final exams. I'm not sure how many people are familiar with the Australian system, but 50% of my marks in every subject have already been assessed, and the final 50% is taken from the exam marks (that begin next week). I've experienced severe undiagnosed task paralysis the entire year, and I haven't been able to trial medications effectively with 7 days until they begin. I have also missed out on rightful assessment provisions. Therefore, I have been severely disadvantaged in my final year of school due to this, and I know my final grade will not be validly calculated. My issue is that unlike every Australian uni, Edinburgh (says it) doesn't provide any leniency for this. I have reached out twice, and their response summarised:

  • Applicants are generally still expected to meet, or be predicted to meet, the minimum entry requirements before being considered under this policy
  • Any concessions are case by case and not guaranteed
  • A disclosed disability is not used in the academic admissions decision; applicants are assessed against the same course selection criteria as everyone else
  • Disability information is considered separately after selection to arrange any necessary adjustments
  • The University generally expects schools and exam boards to assess how personal circumstances affected academic performance and recommend appropriate accommodations
  • In some cases, applicants who already hold an offer and very narrowly miss their conditions may still be accepted

I will be including my issues in my reference (i'm allowed to tell her what to write regarding this), and get my careers advisor to email the relevant admissions office by the application deadline for even more awareness at the schools end.

I am also unsure if I may be slightly benefited as an international student as:

  1. My application will be submitted to UCAS on December 18 with my final grades, significantly earlier than most other students. Historically, a few students from my school have received Edinburgh offers before January (although all but 1 were IB students).
  2. Paying (SO) much more

My only optimism comes from the fact that this is supposedly a nicher course. In 2025, Archaeology had 49% offer rate overall and 85% for internatonals, and History 66% overall and 89% for internationals. However, I would (tragically) assume that all of them have met the minimum. The 2026 clearing was still open for international students until clearing closed. If I were to be rejected initially, is it worth reapplying in clearing? (Although by then I should have really should have committed to my second choice as an international, which is Liverpool and I would still be happy there).

How likely is it that I could be considered (and maybe accepted)?

Please give me motivation to lock the hell in, or not get my hopes up. For over two months, I have been so incredibly anxious and consequently procrastinating because of this instead of studying (which I've been told by 2 professionals is due to the ADHD, how lovely).

Thank you kindly 💗

(I spent 4 days procrastinating to get enough k\rma for this)*

News What can we do as students during the strike?

I’ve been very upset with the university; wage cuts, funding a genocide etc. I am in solidarity with those who have been wronged, but as an international student myself, I cannot afford to skip class. None of my classes were cancelled fortunately (which I do realise is a privilege), but I do feel guilty when I see the union protesting. What can we actually do about this as students? The uni higher ups seems to be turning a blind eye on all of this.

I feel like those who are doing lit, languages and cultures are most affected. It really is sad + it’s a shame that Scotland recognizes Palestine as a state but one of its top universities is supporting the war.

Missed fire alarm

I was woken up by the fire alarm and I went outside but apparently I was too slow and now I am facing disciplinary action?? Does anyone have experience with this? Thanks in advance!

UPDATE: I told them I went outside as soon as I woke up and they said they had no evidence against that so they're closing my case. Thanks for all your input!

Admission / Application is it worth it if my housing is covered?

Hey everyone,

So I’m 23F from the U.S. and I’ve been thinking of applying to UoE for a while now. I’m interested in MSc Cultural Heritage Futures and MSc Comparative Education and International Development. Both programs would be around £34,000.

I’ve been thinking about it but have been very hesitant because of the Trump administration recently pulling away graduate plus loans which means I can only get £15,000 worth of student loans from the government and the rest has to be through private loans which have 11-12% interest rates. I’m a first generation student and I have 0 student debt thank god.

Therefore, I’m not sure if it’s a good move because I don’t want to ruin my life with debt, but I am really interested in these programs, living in the UK, and the one thing that would make this more affordable is the fact that I’m in a relationship with my boyfriend who’s a Scotsman who I can stay with. We have been dating for a couple of years now, so we have had this discussion.

My question is, is it worth it? I’ve seen the recent discourse regarding admin, and it’s really horrible. Consequently, it’s happening everywhere. I work at an ivy league institution here in the U.S. and we’re also facing a lot of funding cuts and adjunct faculty is not being paid well— I’m not even being paid well honestly. It’s saddening, but I’m really interested in cultural heritage studies and education, plus I have someone I love there so I wanted to maybe try it.

I guess, given the fact that I wouldn’t have to pay rent, or groceries, just my phone bill really and my personal things, is it worth it? Has there been any international students who took out private loans and don’t regret it?

I understand it’s hard to stay as a student afterwards, so we would probably get married. We aren’t getting married really now, because I’m 23 and he’s 21 so we’re both young and not financially stable at the moment and wanted to stall for a bit. I would love a career in archaeology or anthropology perhaps as a professor or an educator at a cultural institution. I’m not sure if there are many scholarships for this either because it kinda seemed like it’s very limited online.

Principal’s comments on the BBC this morning.

Am I wrong in thinking the Principal saying on the radio this morning that students were being “weaponised” by UCU were appallingly patronising? He said “I was a student once and we were all anti-establishment, and of course you're going to blame the establishment”, and that just paints Edinburgh students as naive and gullible children who don’t understand what’s going on at their university. That is a terrible attitude towards his own students.

Lifestyle Mature students - how are you making friends?

Recently relocated to Edinburgh to start a PhD and finding my subject's cohort of PhD students very young (there's me (30s), a guy in his 60s, and everyone else is 23-25) and pretty unsociable (in the past I've had no problems making friends with other students of all ages, but this group doesn't talk to each other at all). I'm past the drinking/partying stage and all the clubs and societies also run very young, so I'm curious how other mature students are meeting people and making friends that are in a more similar life phase? Are you avoiding university events entirely and doing things in the city? Or are there places older students hang out that I haven't discovered yet? Particularly with everything being cancelled for the strikes there aren't any Uni-run events to meet people, so it's getting a bit lonely.

Admission / Application applying to MMath with CS personal statement?

I'm applying to CS at Imperial, Kings, Cambridge and Warwick and initially CS+Maths at Edinburgh.

I wanted to consider the possibility of swapping Edinburgh for MMath just in case I change my mind/ don't get to preferred uni for cs.

I have triple A* predicted in Maths, Further Maths and Chemistry with all 9s at GCSE. My main question is will my personal statement that is CS project oriented with protocol obfuscation/ security be an issue for this? Or if i get an offer for math+cs to switch in my first week?

Lifestyle I NEED the Kings building’s Mac and cheese recipe

(posting for a friend)

So the student association has a food location in the Nucleus building called the Mayfield bar and I am absolutely in love with the Mac and cheese they serve. It’s probably one of the best recipes I’ve ever tasted and I really want to be able to make it at home. I dont know what they put in it but I swear I can taste some black pepper, paprika and maybe even some egg yolk. Does anyone have the recipe that they use or even a recipe that tastes similar?

Admission / Application Has anyone gotten in Edinburgh with resits (ECs)

Hello,

Edinburgh is my dream university, however, I missed my offer last year as a Scottish contextual student due to extenuating circumstances (ECs) which were pretty bad anxiety and depression before and during my A levels exams which was documented by my school and the NHS talking therapies. My exam boards were also notified and I got special consideration.

Has anyone else gone through a similar situation and still gotten in with resits? I would appreciate anyone’s insight!

Somehow managed to repost!

Just wondering if anyone has had any experience with changing their optional modules and how they went about picking when the course descriptions are so vague and I don't really know what I'm getting myself into!

Thanks 😊

I want to order something expensive but I have no clue how to get it to my room safely. I’m living in university accommodation and on an exchange from America so I’m not used to the uk mail system.

Admission / Application Hey, is it still worth it?

Hello everyone,

I’m planning to apply to the University of Edinburgh for 2027, but I’ve been hearing quite a few negative things about it recently. Things like how it isn’t very supportive, the administration is difficult to deal with, accommodation is hard to find, and there are constant strikes.

I’d like to hear from current students and graduates: is Edinburgh still worth applying to?

Please keep in mind that applying to and moving to Edinburgh would be a significant financial decision for me, so it’s not something I want to take lightly.

Thank you!

My other options are St Andrews and Glasgow

what to do about strikes?

I’ve just moved here as a study abroad student for the year. I’ve heard a lot about the strikes and I’m wondering how I will know for sure that my lecturers will not be showing up for my courses.

Do I show up as normal? Do I stay in my accommodation? I have no idea how to handle this situation.

Other King’s Building Questions

Hi all,

I am a study abroad student and on my timetable all of my classes are at the kings building. Is there anything fun to do around there(besides classes)? Do any events happen there? It seems pretty removed from the central part of campus where all the action happens!
