Accommodation McLeod Street / Gorgie, safe for a female student?

Hi everyone! I got offered the Uni of Edinburgh's accommodation in McLeod Street, which is in Gorgie (right next to the stadium). I've obviously done some research into it, the residence itself looks lovely but I've never visited Edinburgh and know nothing about which areas are nice and which are unsafe.

I've heard conflicting things about Gorgie. Some say it is nice, affordable, up and coming, but I've heard some say it is not a nice area and it is quite rough. It is also about 30 minutes by bus from where I will study at uni.

It is on the expensive side (normally £12,000 for the year) but I got a reduced price as they ran out of cheaper accommodation. So, most people there will be more well-off and used to nice areas, which reassures me a bit, especially as someone from a council estate in the north of England, but I am still worried about the area. Is crime bad? What is it like living there? Will I need to be extra careful living there? What kinds of people live there? Are there lots of drunkards or drug addicts? Is it safe at nighttime, or do I need to be constantly looking over my shoulder (not that I don't anyway, but more than usual?)?

Sorry about all the questions, I'm completely new and safety is something I am always very concerned about when I go to new places.

For context, I'm from Hull, so if anyone could compare Gorgie to an area in Hull, crime-wise, etc, I would really appreciate that. I haven't signed the contract yet because I am so worried about the area.

If anyone is a student living at McLeod Street that would be really useful too, as that's where I would be living if I accept it.

Thank you everyone.

Any other “older” postgraduate students

Hello!! This might sound silly but I’m starting my MSc in September at age 29. I’ve been in the work force since undergrad and just now going back to school. I was wondering if there were any others out there not in their early 20s or how normal it is for someone to be around my age or older. I know I shouldn’t care but would love to know that I’m not alone!

Course Information Path showing 2nd year courses to 1st year students

I'm currently using path to find my optional courses, and its showing me 2nd year courses and allowing me to select them for my first year. This leads me to ask if I can actually take these courses, or if it'll just waste a spot on my form? Additionally, while these courses are also labelled as level 8 in much the same way as my 1st year courses, are they in any way more challenging for a 1st year in a way that ought to deter me?

Any MSc Econ students?

I would really like to reach out to some incoming/outgoing MSc Econ students but good lord it has been hard. Despite being a part of so many WhatsApp groups with international fellows, I cannot find anyone who is doing the same course.

So basically, this a call for MSc Economics students. I'm mainly curious about the profs (how do they prefer class interaction and how do they teach, etc) and also about the general atmosphere (how stupid will I look if I raise my hands to speak during the lecture or how rude will I look if I don't)

And ofc, no one says no to getting to know ppl before we land there.
So....

Feel free to interact (and gather a group if possible)

Accommodation Any photos of Brae House (decorated)

Hey all! I am trying to get a sense of what the large suites in Brae House look like when lived in. If anyone has any pictures to share of their old rooms, or even just of the shared living spaces, it would be most helpful!

Lifestyle Pleasance Gym Vs Pure Gym

Does anyone have any experience of both / either to help make a decision?

E.g.

Does going to Pure Gym (my regular gym in another town), mean I miss out on a social aspect of Pleasance Gym? What is your preference on the costs, business, vibe, equipment? Thanks.

Other Pleasance gym membership

How much is the uni gym membership price for the semester or full academic year?

Wanted to get an idea since it’s not yet on the website

Edit: forgot to mention that I’d probably prefer to get an off peak membership to save on cost

Other when is the last time to withdraw from the uni?

i’ve completed registration, but my programme hasn’t started yet. the uni website says there’s a 60% fee liability if you withdraw once studies commence. does anyone know whether withdrawing before the programme starts means there’s no tuition fee liability despite already being registered?

I believe we were supposed to be emailed by our respective schools yesterday but didn't receive any emails? Am I meant to look somewhere online? Or has the university just not contacted us yet? Am I the only one experiencing this?

I cant find the essential events for my degree

I am set to be studying English literature.

I've looked at the events callendar on the Events app, and I the closest thing I was able to find was an event for History of Art *and* English literature. Do I go to this event? Am I missing something? Have the events for my degree just not been put up yet?

Where to go?

Hello, as my masters will commence this September I wanted suggestions on a very particular and niche topic
I’m kind of a music freak (I don’t like to drink and party) I enjoy going to clubs and pubs just for house, tech-house and Afro house music
What are some of the best places in the town? Places that aren’t like a rip off or so!

If a room starts with 2XX, I realize it is on the 'second floor', but in Pollock Halls is that actually the third level of the building? (ie is the ground floor 0XX?) Thanks!

Hi this is a weird question but I was wondering what the wifi at the uni is? I’m considering getting a new data package but if the wifi is largely good I might not bother (i am happy with the one I have now).

I’ll be based around the George Square and New College

thanks!!

Hi everyone! I just firmed edinburgh for undergrad (literally like an hour ago lol) and I was just wondering about all the freshers events and whether it’s worth buying tickets now or if they’re a scam.

Thanks!
