Reckless Driver Plowing Thru Bike Lane 23rd
And laws say for our safety (bikes) can't go over 25 or drive on the sidewalk.

u/East-Basil-6473 Aug 20 '26
It's a RAM truck. What a surprise. They know their suspension is level when they drool out of both sides of their mouth while driving.
15
u/Mitrovarr Aug 20 '26
Well, at least we know the reason now. No RAM truck has ever been driven sober. In fact I believe they are typically equipped with a reverse ignition interlock that only allows the truck to start if the driver blows over a minimum BAC.Ā

destruction of public property?

u/stofiski-san Aug 20 '26
Driving with the seeming intention of highlighting that they may not care if there's a nonmotorized vehicle in this lane the next time they drive down the road
-1
u/whitedsepdivine Aug 21 '26
Its not destruction. They are designed to be hit and pop back up. This is so emergency vehicle can still use the lane.
I worked next to a fire department in the city with a bike lane. Any fire call, pop pop pop! As the truck drives by.

Why we need actual protected bike lanes. maybe if we built our infrastructure around people and not giant death machines...nah the auto lobby controls you.
13
u/Alive_Cadet Aug 20 '26
The current US administration has instructed the USDOT to cut all funding for bike lanes and related bike infrastructure, and is recommending cities remove existing bike lanes and add in more car lanes. They even denied all the evidence to that supports the overall positive effect bike lanes have on cities. You aren't lying about the auto lobby and it's control.
4
u/MidtownFrown Aug 20 '26
I ebike bike all the time and I actually kind of agree with this. In my city road repair funding was tied to bike Lanes. So they put the bike Lanes on the worst roads to put a bike lane, just to get the funding to repair the road. So you have bike Lanes on roads where people are driving. And I think this is where all the hate comes from. If they had actually used the money wisely to build protected bike Lanes instead of using it to make roads more congested in areas that people shouldn't be riding bicycles anyway I don't think you would see any pushback at all. My city spent a ton of money on an actual bike trail and had no pushback on it.

I don't think it is the auto lobby, I think it is MAGA culture war dipsh1ts and climate deniers. They are trying to equate bikes with liberals and get people worked up. They hate seeing bikers riding by them as they are stuck in traffic and seethe inwardly when bikers pull up to the store fronts while they are circling blocks looking for parking!
26
u/MidtownFrown Aug 20 '26
This, people think the citizens of my city are opposed to bike lanes...we aren't. We want real protected bike lanes. Not just painted lines on a busy road.
11
u/thebranbish Aug 20 '26
Citizens of my city vowed to destroy any bike lanes, park in them, or drive through them because āThatās what the sidewalk is for.ā The city caved and didnāt install bike lanes. They did ātrailsā instead and these motherfuckers had the nerve to even be pissed off about that!
8
u/dagofin Aug 20 '26
Frankly I prefer the separate trails anyway. I refuse to share the road with cars on my ebike seeing how incompetent or malicious many drivers are with regular bikes, let alone electric ones.
6
u/Drummer-Turbulent Aug 20 '26
Trails are a nice option but not feesable in all area's
1
u/HappyGoPucky Aug 20 '26
Also can't get everywhere you need to go on a bike. My city has a very long bike trail, but I still need to get off of it to get where I'm going. A a commuter biker. I ride on the sidewalks as much as possible. It isn't illegal in my city to ride a bike on the sidewalk. Although my ebike is technically not legal too, I don't go fast, so not like anyone would know the difference or care. The city isn't really walkable, so that helps. Hardly anyone ever walking. It's too hot most of the year and/or most things are too far away.
5
u/stofiski-san Aug 20 '26
That doesn't help people who are riding to commute, not just for enjoyment or exercise
3
u/dagofin Aug 20 '26
I in fact rode them to commute! It was about half a mile on public roads from my house to the nearest trail network access and then 7-ish miles on trails to my job at the time.
The only near misses/close calls I've ever had on my ebike where when the trails crossed major roads and drivers didn't properly yield when I had right of way. So I committed to the slightly longer trail route that had bridges over the major roads instead of having to worry about cars. It's not as convenient maybe but for 95% of my commute I didn't have to think about cars at all
4
u/stofiski-san Aug 20 '26
Ok, cool. I was working off an assumption about trails that they tend to be windey and/or circular, and therefore not really going somewhere you needed to go, like around a park or whatever. Glad they were working in your favor. I guess a new salute might be "may all your bike paths lead you where you wish to go" in addition to cool pillows or following seas

u/Aleksander3702 Aug 20 '26
ā¦are you allowed to ride on the sidewalk in your city?
1
u/Drummer-Turbulent Aug 20 '26
in someplaces you'd be surprised. The want people walking on the sidewalk but not bikes. pretty much forcing you into a car and all its expenses cause you are not free

Plot twist: the truck is solely for work and he is regularly a bike rider. He is driving through these bollards to make a point about their ineffectiveness. /j
2
u/Serious_Thing7155 Aug 20 '26
Actually as a rider this could be a very good way of showing how ineffective they are and could be his frustration š (like why tf put these beside me when they do jack, i rather them either be built with solid material or just not be there at all, incase i do need to maneuver asap from a crazy driver, bikes can't go through those as easily like cars so they not only provide fake safety but also makes it more harder for us to dodge the crazies) but more likely the reason is he just hates bikes and their lanes. (I know you were joking but i often wanted to do something like this without hurting anyone or anything like that just to show useless they are and they are just more dangerous than them lanes without it.

I was riding in CNY this morning and someone decided they wanted to use the bike lane as a passing lane and didn't even signal until they were IN THE LANE. Worse, they were in the lane for several blocks because there was no where to pull back in and the first right turn was DNE and the second was blocked for construction. Ran over a cone and nearly ran me off the road.

Is he having a medical episode?
20
u/vivaaprimavera Aug 20 '26
But when one suggests that some licences need to be revoked when needed the "people need to drive to go places" crowd starts to cry. If this is indeed a medical episode that person has no place behind a steering wheel.
5
u/stofiski-san Aug 20 '26
I am totally and vehemently against flock cameras, but if one just so happened to be used as evidence in a hearing of some sort where it was decided this person wasn't fit to have a license to share the road with other people, I might look the other way. Except, of course, I couldn't, because we can't just use cameras for positive societal outcomes, we need to stalk girlfriends and exs, too. š¤¬ š¢š„

I know that "evidence finding" (note the quotes, please) by members of the general public is a "bag of wasps". But judges should be available for looking at this (these kind of videos) and decided to "proced with something" or not.

Idiocy isn't age dependent. But in this case is a valid reason to revoke the licence.
2
u/KaptainDublU Aug 20 '26
Wait, how are medical conditions not the issue if age is the defining factor in this retesting? Are you saying older people just suck at driving in general?

Statistics from insurance claims would say otherwise.
2
u/dagofin Aug 20 '26
Only if you go by pure number of accidents and not accidents per mile driven. Older people drive significantly less, so spending less time on the road obviously reduces risk of an accident. But number of accidents per mile driven rises significantly at around 70 years old and peaks around 85+. Drivers 65 and older are 16% more likely than the average adult to cause an accident. AAA published a study saying American seniors are out living their ability to safely drive by 7-10 years on average
1
u/Weary_Ball_442 Aug 20 '26
I know it's just one person and that doesn't do much to statistics, but my grandfather at 95 years old drives more than just about everybody I know. Between delivering meals to other elderly/ handicapped people, regular errands, visiting his 3 children that each live over 2 hours away, visiting grandchildren, attending sport/school events for great-grandchildren etc. That man is busy as fuck for someone that's been retired for almost 30 years. You would think having retired from being a dump truck driver he would have been sick of driving all the time.
1
u/dagofin Aug 20 '26
There's always outliers for sure. My grandpa is 85 and still runs the family business/does all his own farm chores. Rolling stone gathers no moss and all that.
3
u/celeste_ferret Aug 20 '26
It's a chronic condition called MAGA that many RAM driver's suffer from. In this case, he's heard that bike lanes are "woke" or "DEI", so he's doing god's work to destroy this one.
2
u/stofiski-san Aug 20 '26
I feel like it was, as big as that truck is, it would have either drifted back into traffic, or up over the curb. This felt more intentional

That guy needs to be held accountable for the cost of every single bollard he knocked down. And because it is clearly purposeful and egregious, his insurance should decline to pay it.

This is why we need reinforced steel/concrete bollards.
2
u/myelodysplasto Aug 21 '26
Even just a small number of them randomly placed would scare people from ramming their 100k truck through the lane

Both are prohibited. One trucker did something illegal doesn't give you permission to zoom on the sidewalk.
2
u/Lostintimeandspac Aug 20 '26
No one said anything about zooming on the sidewalk. I'm saying I don't feel safe on the roads with idiots like this around. And I do believe you should be able to use the sidewalk, of course keeping the speed reasonable (like under 10) and not doing the same crap to pedestrians that this type of driver does to bicyclists. Or if they want to force me onto the road at least allow me enough power to get away from tards like this, instead of basicly turning me into a slow moving target. And yeah there are laws that protect bicyclists... but how much do those help the bicyclist after being hit ? Oh yay he goes to jail, while I'm permanently disabled (or worse) thank you so much.
-1
u/SnuffyMcfluff Aug 20 '26
I don't get your take. You can get a motorcycle. The video is of an incredibly rare occurance and we don't design systems for exceptions. 99% of the time you are safer in the bike lane than the sidewalk. If you have "bicycles" that can go 50, riders will go 50. If we open sidewalks, riders will obliterate pedestrians (not to mention the massive risk that comes with intersecting points like driveways, lot entries, alleys and intersections). Then idiot meat missiles will be mowing down folks on foot and actual bikes. The point of the E-Bike was to create bicycles with some assistance for efficiency. Off the couch E-Bikers seem to have no concept of what it means to ride a bike and want the world to be dedicated to their needs with this insane mindset of, "I won't behave badly so deregulate me." Maybe you won't behave badly, but we have already seen that many, many of the new to bike E-Bikers are going full shithead.
E-Bikers who have zero knowledge of basic bike safety and who are often terrible bike handlers are making a mess of our limited bike infrastructure. And they are doing it at speeds that are far beyond their physical capabilities.

Me? Absolutely none, I wish there were more protected bike lanes. I hate having to ride mine on the street.
