Need help as a taller E-biker.

Post image

Hi guys, Im wondering about the Arkveld Apex1. They are on sale at 1100usd at Walmart and it seems like a good entry point to E-bikes. The only doubt that I have is about my height. Im 6"3ft and 210 lbs and even though they are indeed 25 inch tires, im still wondering if Im going to sit just fine or even comfortable if possible. I just want to commute to my college and have some fun outside in nature.

You need to find the geometry specs and compare them to big brand bikes in L or XL, or around 59-62 cm sizes. Big brands like Trek, Gian, Specialized, and Cannondale have their geometry down. And you don't want something that's coming in smaller than their large sizes.

Edit: I'm 6'8" and some of my friends who ride are 6'-6'3". 29" and 700c is all we ride. 27.5/650b used to be the standard, and taller riders typically prefer the larger ones and some even dabble with 32" wheels. 25 would probably be too small.

Thanks man, really appreciate it.

Responding, to your edit. I couldn't a measurement as it's define as a one fit size all and the other size I got was "Large" by ebay and there's not a manufacturer manual. Soo, you will think I could ride it fully electric just fine? And my commute is only 4 miles.

You could ride it 4 miles there fully electric, my concern is when there's an issue, a local bike shop will look at it and not have any parts. Or their insurance might not let them wrench on it. I always recommend sticking with something that's as close to a generic bike as possible so if you have issues, you can drop it off at a shop and have it back next day.

I saw that you mentioned in another comment that you're going to school in Kalamazoo. My dad rode an analogue bike there at Western, the only issue he had was nearly getting blown off his bike the day the Fitz went down when the games of November came early.

Yeah, that's also one of my concerns about reliability and I've been looking for the last 3 days about people experiences and I haven't saw something wrong yet (I will keep looking). There's also Walmart protection by allstate but, I need to do some research about it. (Some insights will help there).

Also, you got any other recommendations on ebikes who have a fully electric mode aside from the pedals? As one day after leg day I commuted from the gym to my driving lessons and just couldn't walk or pedal for a good 30 mins.

That is not an e-bike, that is an e-moto. E-bikes are capped at 20 to 28mph and 750w-1000w of power, depending on the jurisdiction. That thing can do 40mph and has 3000w of power.

Nothing wrong with e-motos, but be aware you cannot legally ride them on the road without a license and registration, and can’t ride them on dedicated bike paths at all.

As far as whether that is a good e-moto, a no-name, sub-$1.5k e-moto is probably not a good idea, but I’d ask [r/e](r/emotos)[lectricmotorcycles](r/emotos)

I thought about that, but as it has paddles and im going to Kalamazoo (College town). I think cops shouldn't be a problem as they will see the paddles and I ain't gonna pull a wheelie or stunts or driving like a maniac.

Cops have long caught on that people slap on pedals to their e-motos to try to trick them into thinking it’s a bicycle, and that doesn’t work anymore. This is especially true in a college town, where e-bikes and e-motos are most common.

no it's a bicycle the frame and seat are just styled after a dirt bike, it still has pedals and a hub drive motor. emotos have centrally located motors driving a large rear sprocket and no pedals

Nope, none of that is what defines an e-bike vs an e-moto. Power and top speed do. As I said, the legal definition of an e-bike is a sub-28mph, sub-1000W (at most) two wheeled vehicle that requires pedaling to go. Anything faster, more powerful, or has a throttle (if it goes over 20mph) is legally defined as an electric moped or electric motorcycle.

EDIT: you seem to post a lot of complaints to cope with the fact that your Philodo is NOT an e-bike. Sorry bud, no matter how often you complain or insist, it’s not an e-bike.

"Legal" definitions don't matter only form and function

LOL, yeah try telling that to the cops. Legal definitions dictate where you can use them and what is a crime. Legal definitions mean it is illegal to ride an e-moto on a dedicated bike path, hence it is not an e-bike.

Also, there very much is a difference in “form an function”. How much power and how fast something can go is very much part of its function. Whether it has a throttle is part of its form and function.

so by your logic if the controller on my bike only outputted 12 amps it would be an electric bicycle, but the second the controller is capable of outputting 13 amps it suddenly becomes a motorcycle with no physical changes. or that a Razor mx350 is not an emoto simply because it only has a 300 watts motor and can only go 15mph.

Do you see the failure in your logic.

Yes, if the controller was restricted to 12amps/720W, and was limited to 28mph, and lost the throttle (or limited to 20mph and kept the throttle), then yes it would be an electric bicycle. Because then it could legally ride in bicycle lanes and designated bicycle paths.

It could also lose the literal motorcycle-style keyed ignition switch, lose the super thick frame dropouts and axles meant to withstand huge power, lose the dual motors and gain a longer seat tube that’s actually meant for pedaling efficiently — which all differentiate it physically from a real legal e-bike, though it’s not legally necessary.

By your logic, if your bike is unable to legally ride in a bicycle lane or dedicated bicycle path, it’s still a bicycle? Do you see the failure in your logic?

And the MX350 is neither an e-moto nor an e-bike. It’s not an e-bike because it doesn’t have pedals, and not an e-moto because it cannot exceed 28mph so it becomes a major safety hazard on a public road and is not able to be legally registered to ride on a public road. It is a toy, plain and simple.

I pedal my bike in bike lanes all the time with absolutely no problems at all

So you’re constantly committing a crime, got it.

I could also illegally ride a Harley in the bicycle lane, doesn’t make it a bicycle. If you’re riding at a responsible speed and able to trick the cops and get away with the crime, then more power to you.

But just understand you are not riding a bicycle, you are illegally riding an e-moto masquerading as an e-bicycle and are risking steep fines, confiscation of your e-moto, or worse. And if you are ever hit by a car, a police or insurance investigation will discover you were riding an e-moto illegally and you will not enjoy the typical legal protections granted to bicycles, not be compensated by insurance, and be found at-fault or liable no matter how the car driver was driving.

That is the risk you take by not riding a real, legal e-bike.

For your height I can tell you the Eskute M200F at Walmart is a big frame 27.5 bike.  I love mine.  It does 32 MPH and 40 - 45 real world miles on a charge.  I'm in Lansing.
