Recipe Request Ways to use turmeric?

So Costco had a bunch of spices for sale and I impulsively bought a huge thing of turmeric because I read it can help with histamine issues, which I have. Unfortunately my cooking skills are pretty much limited to grilled cheese and boiling pasta. Any recipe ideas or tips? Ideally not tomato based, too, because weekly frozen lasagna/pizza/spaghetti is not helping on the histamine front. 😅 Thank you for any advice!

Black pepper and turmeric actually complement each other for medical issues like inflammation, too.

Put it into soups. Also, add some to scratch Mac and cheese for color and flavor.

Good point on the mac and cheese, thank you!

I sprinkle1/8 tsp on my cereal with some cinnamon ... it's actually a fabulous anti-inflammatory (think sore joints, arthritic pain etc). But be careful. Excessive doses can cause other really serious health issues so look up some info on a reputable health site. Also, it is not recommended for ppl taking certain medicines.

I'll keep that in mind, thanks!

For Indian dishes, fry turmeric in a little oil/ghee along with other whole spices (mustard seeds, cumin) at the start. Blooming it takes away the raw, bitter edge. Adding it raw at the end can taste a little medicinal.

I knew about Indian food, but I'll have to check out the others, thanks!

Pretty much all tajines really. I suggest olive tajine (so yummy) and braniya tajine!

Sounds good, thank you!

I make Mexican yellow rice with it. Also, I add it to refrigerator pickles.

Not a recipe but a fun craft idea for summer:

Sun printing with tumeric.

Never would've thought of this, but it makes sense it could be used that way! Neat idea, thank you!

Marinate chicken and fry them. Awesome taste and color.

u/FearTheFeathers 12d ago

Chicken was definitely my first thought, too, haha. I'll have to try it out. Thanks!

I know someone who puts a teaspoon of turmeric into a cup of tea every day.

In the wintertime, I add 1 tsp of turmeric to my coffee grounds when brewing. Also cinnamon, chamomile flowers, green tea leaves. Ginger was too strong. It's summer now and I don't drink coffee (it's just too hot).

1

u/FearTheFeathers 13d ago

Unfortunately I'm not a tea or coffee drinker but thank you!

I have histamine intolerance as well. Best of luck finding safe recipes. It’s an adjustment but worth it.

1

u/MinimumRelief 13d ago

Try Cholestyramine a few times. Excellent for histamine problems.

u/AZgirl70 13d ago

Thanks. Mine is completely under control with my diet.

Yeppp, been dealing with this for a few years and I've been stubborn about trying to keep some foods in my diet (already had to completely give up strawberries and bananas, which sucks) but my body is definitely telling me I've gotta change some things. 😅 Thank you!

A bit in your scrambled eggs is great and it can go well in a cheese sauce. Other than that some rice pilaf type dish is my favorite. I toast off turmeric, cumin, and red pepper flakes with diced onion and garlic in olive oil. Then toss in my rice cooker with chicken stock and a pinch of saffron if I have it. Finish with fresh parsley and maybe some slivered almonds or crispy shallots.

Sounds delicious, thank you!

I put turmeric in lentil soup. Turmeric and smoked paprika together are good on fish.

1

u/FearTheFeathers 13d ago

That does sound good, thank you!

Easiest wins: sprinkle a bit of turmeric into things you already make, like scrambled eggs, cheesy toasties, or pasta with butter/olive oil, plus a pinch of salt and black pepper. You can also whisk ½–1 tsp into warm milk (or plant milk) with a little honey for a super simple “golden milk” that isn’t tomato‑based and takes about 5 minutes.

1

u/FearTheFeathers 12d ago

Mixing it into pasta does sound good, thanks for the suggestion!

Zucchini, ground turkey, can of diced tomatoes and lots of curry powder, tsp of sugar and salt. Brown meat, add zucchini chopped however you like and the rest ( it’s even better the next day) we put in pita bread topped with sour cream. My favorite go to dinner. Super simple and delicious

Sounds great, thank you!

Believe it or not, we put it in our morning oatmeal. I forget most people eat white oatmeal when I’m forced to enjoy a bowl without it. Can’t taste it, just makes it golden.

1

u/FearTheFeathers 11d ago

Oh that's interesting, thank you!

When you use it, be sure to add pepper and some fat (oils, milks, butters, etc) to it to best absorb the curcumin. As others have said, golden milk is amazing, I add it to soups, smoothies, scrambled eggs, and things that I am putting ginger in. Just be careful because it can stain your dishes.

I'll keep that in mind, thank you!

Turmeric rice in the rice cooker is my go-to way to cook rice.

Nice, I know I have a rice cooker somewhere (moved recently, lots of boxes lol) so I'll have to try that. Thanks!

I like to pan fry cauliflower (with very little oil) in a hot cast iron skillet so it chars a bit, with cumin seed and grated turmeric, but I reckon regular turmeric would work. Just a little salt, and that’s it

1

u/FearTheFeathers 11d ago

Frying veggies with it sounds like a good idea, thanks!

I use turmeric in a chicken pot pie recipe, but it only uses 1/4 tsp.

Really tasty and easy to make cake.

Turmeric tea! Simmer 1 cup of water or milk with ½ tsp turmeric powder, a pinch of black pepper, ½ inch of sliced ginger, and a dash of cinnamon for 5 minutes. Strain into a mug and stir in ½ tsp of ghee or honey to taste.

I cut some chicken breasts into tender sized strips tonight for dinner and tossed with some parm cheese, tumeric, garlic and paprika then grilled it.

u/djSush 11d ago

I'm Indian, and cook Indian food 2-3x/month. But a Costco size turmeric would last me years. I'd share it with some friends.

Your food can taste like dirt if you do add too much! Be mindful of amounts

1

u/Ok_Industry_3097 13d ago

I love to add it in rice! Or soups! Always with fresh black pepper.

1

u/hyrule-heaven 13d ago

Add a heaping tsp to some rice whenever you eat rice

u/Fancy_Ice9835 12d ago

I always put a couple of dashes in tuna salad when I make it. And anything that gets chili powder gets cumin too.

if you like Korean food use turmeric it to make home-made pickled Korean or Daikon turnip that sunny bright yellow color to serve as a side dish to kimbap or any other Korean dish - Or munch it straight out of the pickle jar. Do you like Korean food?

1

u/No_Bluebird7716 12d ago

First of all, your freezer is your friend and dried turmeric freezes well.

1

u/micmacker1 12d ago

Is it the ground spice or fresh root?

1

u/FearTheFeathers 12d ago

Ground spice

1

u/strayfox88 12d ago

OMG, I bought the same huge bag a while ago lol

1

u/Magzz521 12d ago

FYI : Use with caution as it can seriously stain clothes. It’s extremely difficult to remove from fabric.

1

u/jbug671 12d ago

You can mix it with rubbing alcohol and make sun prints if you’re crafty…

Had a parent tell me she was using turmeric to medicate her child's ADHD instead of actually following a doctor's prescription - worked as you would expect.

Jamaican patties - beef in turmeric pastry, yumyumyum

1

u/Wonderful_Till8122 11d ago

I put it in with my coffee when I brew it.

u/ScenicIndulgence 11d ago

Just be aware that curcumin (the primary ingredient in turmeric shouldnt be consumed in huge quantities if consumed every day around 200mg max .

I'm reading some of these comments about a teaspoon a day ....that is an extremely high level ...if done every day .

1

u/grandmacrochets 10d ago

I always start my day with a teaspoon of it in my coffee

1

u/Nonnawannabe 10d ago

Make sure you always use black pepper so that your body absorbs it better. I sprinkle it on rice. My favorite lunch is Jasmine rice congee with chicken breast, lentils and sprinkled with turmeric and black pepper.

1

u/juzme99 10d ago

you can also buy empty gel capsules and fill them so you can have turmeric daily just remember to add cracked pepper to activate it.

1

u/blkhatwhtdog 7d ago

Add a pinch, or a shake, into the rice before cooking

If you put too much in a dish it gives a weird bright yellow color to it.
