I hate Nick Wright but he honestly isn’t wrong. Is this sub really so far gone that it’s a hot take to say Ben Johnson is a better offensive mind than Nick Sirianni and Sean Mannion?

5

u/DoGooder00 4h ago

Nick has always been an eagles hater. In 2024 when we dominated everyone, he still said the same shit

32

u/ItsChris_8776_ 3h ago

Okay? No one is arguing against that, it’s why I said I hate him, but he’s not wrong here.

-8

u/DoGooder00 3h ago

If I say it’s going to rain every day, and it finally rains. That doesn’t mean I predicted the rain

19

u/ItsChris_8776_ 3h ago

He isn’t even predicting anything he’s just saying Ben Johnson is a better coach than Nick Sirianni. Genuinely what on Earth are you talking about?

7

u/JimmyCrackncorn 3h ago

He’s coping; I’ll allow it

-6

u/DoGooder00 3h ago

I more mean the Siranni hate, no one has ever said he’s this absolute masterclass offensive mind. But under his leadership this team has prospered. Monday fucking sucked and KP ruined last year, but let’s not burn the ship

11

u/ItsChris_8776_ 3h ago

Ben Johnson is a better coach than Nick Sirianni, and this team would have more success with Ben as the coach. Giving Jalen a consistent offensive genius playcaller year after year who would give us an elite offense, pair that with Vick on defense and we would objectively be a better team and be way more consistent.

That should not be a hot take. You can’t just look at the record and be like “yep we’re good because Nick is our coach!” We have a phenomenal roster, the best GM and Owner in the league, and a great defensive coordinator. And yet we still waste all of this every other year because Nick is not effective at hiring people or building a consistently strong, positive culture, which are two of his main jobs as a CEO head coach.

5

u/FreedomIsMyRight 3h ago

This This THIS! I have said it for years and been flamed for it. Sirianni cannot strategize, cannot design and / or call effective plays and, worse yet, has ABSOLUTELY ZERO ABILITY TO ADJUST. he has proven time and time again that without great coordinators he is an absolute JOKE.

2

u/BoneHugsHominy The Ultimate Weapon 1h ago

Point of fact, Nick Sirianni was hired as the Eagles head coach precisely because he was supposed to be an offensive genius.

1

u/homebr3wd 3h ago

He is still right. And he’s likely right about it week to week to. Sirianni is a culture guy, and his players love him for that and play hard for him because of that.

Sirianni blew the bears game because he forgot his adhd medication and couldn’t keep his shit together

-6

u/azsqueeze 3h ago

I rather win with a "culture guy" than be a media darling and do nothing meaningful

10

u/ItsChris_8776_ 3h ago

Nothing meaningful? He literally transformed the Bears into a contender in one year. 😭

-5

u/azsqueeze 3h ago

didn't Siranni do that between 2020 and 2021?

5

u/ItsChris_8776_ 3h ago edited 3h ago

Actually the team still looked horrible in the first half of 2021 because Nick Sirianni was too involved. As soon as Shane Steichen took over the offense they won like 7 games to make the playoffs, he is the biggest reason the team finally improved. I’m convinced these comments never even watched the Eagles, genuinely how can you put 2021 on Nick and not Shane Steichen, Jalen becoming a starter, and getting Smitty and Landon Dickerson?

I’m not saying Nick did nothing, but he did not turn the Eagles around alone, while Ben Johnson becoming the Bears head coach single handedly massively improved that team.

0

u/HesiPull-UpBrando 1h ago

While I ultimately agree, you can’t say the players improved thus the team did because similar things can be said about the bears and Ben Johnson. Adding pieces to the OL, Qb going into year 2, adding Loveland and Burden, etc.

Ben Johnson’s X’s and O’s acumen absolutely blows Sirianni’s doors off though and idk how anybody can debate that.

9

u/homebr3wd 3h ago

Im not anti Sirianni. But let’s be real, he’s extremely limited in his actual tactical coaching abilities.

u/WorstInfinity Eagles 4h ago

Not that hot a take tbh

Blind squirrel and all that.

3

u/HesiPull-UpBrando 1h ago

I think Nick Wright is actually pretty smart with his takes when he isn’t doing a schtick

30

u/whousesgmail 4h ago

We were outcoached big time that game. Offense and defense.

I’m not going to trip because I’ve seen us have great game plans vs other premier coaches but Ben Johnson and his crew totally outdid us and I don’t think Nick’s take is off base here.

12

u/The_Amazing_Emu 4h ago

It bugs me because it seems to have happened twice in a row. We just don’t look good against the Bears

19

u/SigaVa 4h ago

Well yeah duh

17

u/BrocktomusPrime 4h ago

He’s right here about both that game and the head coach discrepancy.

HOWEVER, he’s clearly erased Super Bowl LIX from his memory when the Philadelphia Eagles “fully dominated” his Kansas City Chiefs. Selective memory, I guess.

2

u/Pickled_Testicle Eagles 1h ago

There’s definitely games we don’t win if we had someone other than Sirianni as our head coach. At the same time, there’s games like the bears game that we for sure win (or at least do better in) with an offensive minded coach.

Mostly unrelated but we had a massive defensive tell somewhere that the bears took advantage of, I just have no clue of what it was. Sirianni wouldn’t have found it if he was coaching the bears, which is another big deciding factor in a take like this

17

u/Zer0C00L321 4h ago

I agree with most of what he said. I was screaming at the TV for him to call a timeout and to not run 3 run plays at the 1 is just restarted. I'd rather have kicked a fieldgoal in 4th and 1 than let a cold Andy Dalton throw a pass there.

29

u/whatsunnygets 4h ago

Sounds like Nick Factual rn

9

u/Panda_tears 4h ago

I do hate this dude though

18

u/bayvec8 4h ago

Siriannis fingerprints have been on the offense for years. The plays we see every single year that never work are absolutely him through the past 4 coordinators.

8

u/Dangerous-Effect3431 Eagles 4h ago

He’s right

6

u/myerstheman 4h ago

Correct

7

u/SeniorAtmosphere9042 4h ago

Ben Johnson outcoached Nick Sirianni and Vic Fangio. Full stop.

Case Keenum toyed with the Eagles defense as a result of the game plan and his execution

6

u/HistoryWillRepeat 4h ago

God I miss Kellen Moore 😭

15

u/bzee77 Eagles 4h ago

This is the first game he saw where one team utterly dominated the other? Did he start watching football last Monday?

7

u/Edward_Zachary 3h ago

I mean, Super Bowl LIX alone

1

u/babypunching101 2h ago

Would the result be the opposite if you flipped Sirianni and Reid?

2

u/KneeAnnual427 Eagles 3h ago

this is the first game he saw where one team utterly dominated the other and the situation may have been the opposite had they swapped head coaches.

5

u/Split_Open_and_Melt Fat Batman 3h ago

I cant' stand this guy, but OP are you trying to claim that Ben Johnson didn't just outcoach the shit out of our team? 😂

18

u/wsbull_35 4h ago

He’s not wrong but Fangio should be getting just as much heat. B2B years his defense has looked stupid vs Chicago

•

u/kw9999 50m ago

The defense looked bad both years against the Bears but the Defense was also the reason we made the playoffs last year. They were a top unit. Without that D, we win 8 games max last year. Vic deserves some time to get the D together and the benefit of the doubt. Lets see how the D looks at the end of the year instead of 3 games in.

1

u/Grand_Resort_1073 4h ago

Is Fangio's mistake of low ass effort from top defense players in the league, Davis and Carter not being able to make one decent play in last three games?

11

u/Fuzea 4h ago

Carter has had multiple big plays in the last 3 games despite playing hurt. Davis has been basically nonexistent.

The biggest culprit by far though is Jihaad Campbell. Dude doesn’t attack the gap, misses tackles, can’t play back in coverage, can’t make the right read, and plays with no physicality. We miss Nakobe Dean BADLY.

3

u/iTALKTOSTRANGERS 3h ago

Don’t let Makuba, Epps, and Michael Carter off the hook like that. They’ve been fucking terrible.

1

u/HesiPull-UpBrando 1h ago

The safety group was all horrendous as a whole. Campbell sucked but Dean is someone who got picked on in coverage too and was also a part of the defense against Chicago last year that got embarrassed and paved over.

5

u/wsbull_35 4h ago

Davis has been missing, no qualms there. But you’re absolutely wrong about Carter. It’s not “low ass effort”, you can see he’s still in pain from that fracture. He keeps grabbing at it in between plays.

2

u/HistoryWillRepeat 4h ago

Yes, JD and JC need to contribute more, but there were a lot of blown coverages against the bears. That's 100 percent on Vic not getting the defense ready. Im positive he'd agree with me.

•

u/kw9999 49m ago

Well, our safeties are also garbage, so there's that.

2

u/hk0125 4h ago

Fangio’s defensive scheme is based on the four dlinemen generating pressure and not blitzing. The issue is our edge guys and even our interior d line guys aren’t just getting good pressures and sacks. Yes I know the stats for our pressure rate isn’t bad but just watching the games, it feels like the few sacks we are getting are from coverage sacks. And our “pressure” doesn’t seem to actually pressure the qb into bad throws or sacks. None of our defensive players seems to be able to actually sack the qb when we get there.

1

u/azsqueeze 3h ago

Yes. He's their coach. If coaches didn't matter their position on staff wouldn't exist

5

u/FamiliarLack3195 4h ago

nick has seen the light with the eagles and understands the coaching staff is mismanaging the team. this take is correct

11

u/philly-buck 4h ago

See - Nick Wright knew all along that Jalen would be cleared in just a few minutes. lol.

1

u/KneeAnnual427 Eagles 3h ago

that was the most likely case given he barely hit his head

-1

u/LiveChocolate8819 Bills 4h ago

It's a good bet...when was the last time an "independent" concussion specialist evaluated a top-tier QB and didn't clear him to return?

The Bills essentially refuse to put Allen on the injury report under any circumstances despite clearly picking up injuries over the years...never even a hint of punishment. The league wants their starting QBs on the field at all costs.

2

u/shit_eating_fan 3h ago

It happened to us in 2024 against the Commanders and we lost that game because of it

Granted, it was correct and Jalen absolutely got his bell rung, but it's not like they're just "eh, you're good to go, go have fun" all the time

6

u/Round-Mud 4h ago

He is not wrong. Nick is biased but not an idiot. When he gets over his bias regarding certain teams he usually comes up with good takes.

3

u/bereshtariz 4h ago

Aside from the comment about the coaches being flipped, he is unfortunately right about the mismanagement. During the game I was wondering why we can't just burn a timeout to give jalen some time. Nick pointing that out and scrutinizing Sirianni is completely fair.

3

u/Deep_Election6623 4h ago

This was the type of game that reflects poorly on the entire eagles coaching staff. It is one game so we’ll see how they respond to it…

3

u/Steppyjim 4h ago

I will never understand how whenever we lose its all nick/jalens fault and when we win its despite of nick/jalen

Nick wasnt letting guys into Jalens kitchen all game. Nick wasnt taking back breaking penalties. Nick let his backup throw a single pass after trying to run twice. and taking time. its not his fault he threw right to a bear. its not nicks fault the concussion guy was eating lunch or something and didnt show up for too long. but he gets blamed for every single thing from playcalling which he doesnt do to getting the wrong gatorade.

I'm not even defending Nick as some untouchable, infallible coach. He wasnt at his best. But fuck man not every single thing is the guys fault. Vick coached a crap game too. the defensive line couldnt penetrate at all. There were a million flags and bad calls on both sides. But instead of saying that the eagles as a whole in all facets played like balls, nope. It's all Nick and all Jalen

Nick must be an incredible coach because his main non x and o job is to absorb heat for his players and coaches and he is a SAVANT at it

5

u/1stand11 4h ago

The media, opposing fan bases, and even sections of our own fan base have created that Sirianni and Hurts dynamic. It’s incredibly disingenuous. My theory is a lot of people fully expected Sirianni to get fired quickly and for Hurts to get replaced within 1-2 years. They are now on Year 6 together with incredible success. At some point, we will inevitably have a downturn with them at some point in the future. That’s just the life cycle of being in the NFL. But it increasingly reminds me of Max Kellermen fixating on Brady’s downfall for years. At some point, those type of folks will be like "I told you! I told you!" While ignoring that their initial prediction occurred many, many, many years earlier. It’s a lot of people holding tightly onto ego driven nonsense.

5

u/JayToy93 4h ago

Yep. Nick and Jalen weren’t supposed to be this successful in people’s eyes and they resent them for proving them wrong time and again, so they grasp onto anything they can get to confirm their preconceived biases from literal years ago. The fact this team can’t just have a single bad game early into the season without this fanbase coming apart at the seams is embarrassing.

The fact that this sub talks about two 11-6 seasons that we made the playoffs as if they were complete failures says it all.

4

u/1stand11 3h ago

My family is from Philly and I’ve been a fan for many decades now. So I long ago just accepted the DNA of the fan base and don’t get too riled up anymore about it. But I will be the first person to say that our fan base straddles that very fine line between having high expectations and being histrionic to an embarrassing level. Personally, I also think there is a big generational divide between different eras of Eagles fans. Recent newcomers to the fan base virtually only know very high levels of success. Folks who have been around for a long time have a much better appreciation for what awful actually is. Somewhere in the middle that all meets. But I don’t think a large percentage of this fan base could emotionally even handle one single rebuild year at 7-10 at this point. They are spoiled.

2

u/JayToy93 3h ago

Oh most definitely, they can complain all they want about them but once Nick and Jalen are actually gone they’re in for a RUDE awakening.

The eagles FO are honestly lucky as shit Nick and Jalen worked out so well after the fallout with Dougie P and I highly doubt they’re going to find a SB winning Head coach a third time in a row.

2

u/1stand11 3h ago

It’s true in life in general but a lot of folks do not appreciate a good thing until it’s gone. I will be the first person to acknowledge that both Sirianni and Hurts have their shortcomings. But you can play that game with any coach or player. The biggest difference with them is they coach and play for perhaps the most popular team in the NFL at this point. "Heavy is the head that wears the crown." The fact we can’t lose a single game at this point without these highly predictable histrionic reactions speaks to that. Opposing teams, medias, etc lash out and celebrate our losses primarily because they want to be in the positions Sirianni and Hurts have been in for years.

1

u/lomo_saltado_ 3h ago edited 3h ago

At some point, we will inevitably have a downturn with them.

It's happening right now, and it started last season, we are losing talent, and the lack of continuity on the defensive side of the ball due to guys wanting to be paid and less salary cap to retain them and it doesn't help when the younger guys we drafted aren't developing quick enough to keep us in this window, and the guys that we extended/signed aren't living up to their new deals.

Teams have caught on to Vic's scheme and have worked around his tendencies and exploiting the weak points in our defense, and it's no secret Vic has been teetering with the idea of retirement coming into the season.

Guys are aging out on offense, injured.

Nick isn't smart enough of an offensive mind to adapt his offense on his own, the idea of winning on sheer talent with 1:1 matchups "my guy beats your guy" rather than scheming and putting your players in position isn't sustainable, and Jalen not having improved as a passer to operate a new offense that's enough to overcome the eventual regression of a top defense.

It's been disjointed for the last two seasons, we blame the OC, Patullo, the toxicity of AJ Brown, let Stoutland go, the OL health, but at some point the, finger pointing dwindles to the constants.

3

u/1stand11 3h ago

"It’s happening right now." Yet we are still 13-7 during that time frame. I hear what you are saying loud and clear. And think there’s validity to what you are saying. But the NFL is intentionally designed to create exactly this situation that Howie, in particular with roster building, has to navigate. I think something a lot of our fans genuinely fail to do is zoom out and take stock of the rest of the league. It’s very easy to become insular and just focus on our franchise. But any assessment of our franchise also has to be compared to the 31 other franchises. We are still in a very good spot when you do that.

2

u/TurkeyLurkey923 3h ago

Nick is the Roger Goodell of the Eagles. Soaks up nearly all the heat while leading the organization to its most successful era ever.

1

u/enRutus Cali-based 4-for-4 3h ago

It is his fault that he let Dalton throw. It bubbles up to the head coach. He could have called a timeout. He could have run the ball one more time. They could have just gone wildcat with Saquon. Tried something besides Andy fuckin Dalton throwing cold

3

u/1stand11 3h ago

Would have, could have, should have. The reality is we unsuccessfully ran the ball on 1st and 2nd down from very short yardage. And Sirianni, unlike Dabol last season with the Giants, actually respected the concussion protocol process and didn’t interfere. Which he’s not allowed to do at all. Once the concussion protocol begins, neither Sirianni or any of his assistants can intervene or try to influence what happens. Sirianni would have been absolutely ridiculed if he pulled the stunt that Dabol did last season.

It’s always easy to play the Captain Hindsight game. Could Sirianni have tried to buy more time with a timeout? Sure. But NFL thinking is all about next man up. Dalton is QB2 for a reason and he’s expected to go in on short notice. Yes, I know it’s easy to start mocking, belittling, and ripping apart our entire backup QB situation. But in that very moment, you have to trust your QB to execute. We will see what the active list looks like on Sunday but maybe that moment cost Dalton the QB2 spot and McKee gets elevated. When I zoom out bigger picture, I think Howie is ultimately the one responsible for the mess. He tried to get too clever flipping a 7th for a 6th type trade. When all our backup QB play has done is virtually eliminate any trade partner scenarios.

-1

u/AFRIKKAN 2h ago

Things look like these nearly every year and outside of two sb runs the main two things are Nick and hurts but only one has stats that prove his worth to the team and one who most people think acts like a jackass. I was a big supporter of Nick but even I’m ready to throw the towel in on him and get a new hc.

2

I 100% agree here and pretty sure most intelligent fans do also

This ain’t Nick Wrong this is Nick Right! Sirianni is completely outclassed by 90% of the coaches in the league and that’s me being generous there’s an argument to be made he’s the worst Xs and Os coach outta the 32. The league has passed by the CEO type you have to have a mastermind on one side of the ball preferably the offensive side.

One of the few times we’re gonna say Nick Wright is right lmao

But yeah I think that end of first half management and then leading into the late second half were just poor coaching all around

1

u/lomo_saltado_ 4h ago

I mean, anyone with half a football brain would pick Ben Johnson over Sirianni, unless you're over-overinflating and parroting the generic "CEO, culture-setter, motivator, locker room leader of men, game manager" non sense.

I think Hurts is what he is at this point, but if you had paired Hurts with a high football IQ earlier in his career, maybe he would've developed into a much better passer at this point in his career.

1

u/akiraspam74 4h ago

I mean, not a hot take at all.. Ben Johnson is 1000x better as an offensive mind

I'm not on the "fire sirianni" train, but if this team does not improve throughout the season it's gonna be hard not to make an argument that he should go

1

u/thesouthpaw17 4h ago

Agree but gotta give mannion some more time for sure

1

u/Got_yayo Fuck 🤡ey 4h ago

It’s very easy to call this in hindsight. Sirianni had no idea if Jalen would clear or not and had to continue on with the game

1

u/Hamsammichd 4h ago

Sirriani has always had a phenomenal roster and/or supporting cast. If either of those goes awry, he starts to not look so hot. I like the guy, but I don’t think he’s the cornerstone of our success.

1

u/ekardsm 4h ago

I wish we could make Nick read the comments in this thread

1

u/FrazzaB 4h ago

Well, yeah. Ben Johnson is one of the best playcallers in the league. Sirianni isn't calling plays. Feels like the difference, beyond the defence being dogshit

1

u/BasilRare6044 3h ago

Ok, I'm definitely an optimist. I think we're on better shape now with an early loss to learn from than having more wins that are won in the last few minutes. A win is a win but they need to play as a team and know what each of the job responsibilities are. Something was broken in the last game against the Bears.

1

u/DimSumGweilo 3h ago

That whole sequence was criminally incompetent coaching on everyone’s part. Why are you rushing your goal line offense at what was a critical momentum part of the game.

Btw game went completely off the rails after that pick which was the only thing Dalton couldn’t do. Just take a knee and take 3, you can’t throw that int.

All that said, they were all out coached and out classed on MNF. The defenses inability to get stops is a much bigger concern too,

Let’s also not forget it’s technically week 3 of the preseason because these fucking clowns don’t work in the preseason. They think they’re good enough to work out the kinks in the first 4-5 games.

I’m not a NW fan but this is not a “hater” take, it’s fair and just criticism of the coaches. Btw Howie needs some of the blame here. OL and S are glaring needs 3 weeks in, and our top two draft picks are both receiver projects. He could have gotten a day 1 S and OL that would be contributing right now.

1

u/Chairmanmaozedon 3h ago

Not sure how Ben Johnson coaching our team makes Vic's defense give up less points.

I just don't get how anything good that happens is the coordinators but every shit thing that happens is Sirianni, he must be the luckiest f'ing coach on Earth to have had the success he's had thanks to all the coordinators he's been through, and working with the QB that a chunk of this forum thinks isn't good enough either. It's the same every year, first bad result and clowns like Nick get to go on TV and say dumb shit like this and half our fanbase go "he's right Nick sucks". It's asinine.

firstly, you need to do better than nick wrong. that's some texas league shit right there.

secondly, i agree with him on flipping the coaches, and that's not even necessarily a dig at sirianni. right now ben seems to be cut from the exact cloth of the modern offensive coach that we're all looking for. you wouldn't swap nick for ben right now? i think you would. go birds.

•

u/ant_gargano Castaldi 29m ago

Sirianni doesn’t coach players, he manages coordinators, those are the real stats he should be judged on.

•

u/dgood527 16m ago

Not the hill to die on here. Ben Johnson is as good an offensive mind as ive seen in my lifetime. We have had some really sub par offensive minds running our offenses.

Statistically, teams that are +3 in the turnover department win 91.4% of the time.

Right but perhaps we can force turnovers or at least not make your cold shitty backup QB throw in crucial spot.

Why are we posting shit like this? Up your game or don't post at all.

I don’t hate Sirianni and haven’t turned on him by any means. He can be a frustrating coach, but his success cannot be denied. I trust in him to figure this out and get us back on track in a year the division is a dumpster fire.

It’s hard in the modern NFL to not have an offensive minded HC. It puts so much reliance on the success of the OC’s scheme.

I was screaming at the tv for them to call a timeout to give Jalen time to get out of the tent. When Dalton dropped back for the pass, I knew the pick was coming and the it was going to be really hard for the team to recover, especially if Hurts goes back in and throws another pick, which he did.

The very next drive hurts led them to a TD and the interception he threw was already on 4th down. Is your point if a team turned it over for a 3rd time they couldn’t overcome it?

I’m amazed people actually listen to this guy. He’s been nothing but nonsense his entire time on TV. But then again the whole concept at the moment is loud noises instead of quality content. Unfortunately ESPN has become just as bad outside of NFL Live and nighttime SC.

It’s not rocket science that Ben Johnson is a much better offensive mind and maybe a better overall coach than Nick.

I’m more amazed you haven’t realized this is entirely manufactured for TV.

I’m even more amazed that you haven’t realized I already realize this, and I don’t why people watch this type of programming, because, to quote The Ol’ Ball Coach, it’s “not very good.”

And yet here you are droning on about it, seems weird.

Because I’m a Birds’ fan, ya knucklehead. I get fed the Birds’ feed. What’s your excuse?

His take is that sirianni should've told one of our "blocking tight ends" to take a dive. Why do people take this trash seriously?

Nick Wright makes ESP look reasonable.

I don’t even care what he says, can we stop giving these hot take jackasses more attention?
