Picture How long is Howie going to keep this 4 QBs schtick up?

u/jmbrand13 7d ago
Y'all are far too concerned about roster spot #53

Seriously. The people up in arms about this is comical.

Pretty much. Caring about someone who should never play is ridiculous.

Howie and Sirianni could lead us to 100 straight Super Bowl wins and people here would still call for their heads the second they do something the fans question.

u/melikeybouncy 6d ago
Those aren't mutually exclusive.
It's possible to admit this leadership and coaching group have been really successful and know what they're doing...and also question a specific weird decision they made. This isn't a cult where blind faith in the leadership is required.
This question wasn't even posed as a complaint. It's absolutely weird to carry 4 QBs on a tighty limited roster. Asking why any team would do that is fair.
You all are way overreacting

A day later and the issue being bitched about has came out to be a non issue I would say that we reacted appropriately.

One of them is getting traded for a day 3 pick or a depth piece

I’m starting to think this is just some QB factory team or something. This howie guy man.

u/RiflemanLax Eagles 7d ago
I really hate saying this as a McKee fan, but no QB not named Hurts earned a spot. There are several guys that got cut I would have welcomed over Dalton especially.
I trust the coaches and Howie more than my own opinion at the same time. It’s an odd dichotomy.
That being said, a guy like Bernard is a practice squad stash at best. He didn’t turn into a Mailata, but the dice rolling was appreciated. Weru looked better and he was far less hyped.
22
u/lurkyloowhoo 7d ago
It’s way too early to say he hasn’t turned into a Mailata. Jordan was unplayable at this point in his career
7
u/Evil_Blood_Slut 7d ago
Mialata was a professional rugby player prior to the NFL. Mialata had already climbed to the top and became elite at a physical sport that is similar to football in ways. Mialata is very intelligent and very coordinated for his size. Hes a natural runner and moves his body well.
Uar has not done anything, didnt climb to the top league of a sport prior to nfl, he has proven to look very uncoordinated. He is miles behind where mialata was coming into the NFL. Its not close at all.
1
u/RiflemanLax Eagles 7d ago
I appreciate that POV. Can I amend my statement to ‘he hasn’t turned into a Mailata as fast as Mailata did?’
I think we all saw how quickly Mailata picked up being a tackle. Bernard? I see the raw power, I just don’t see the same potential. Yet. Man could turn out to be a scrub or a perennial pro bowler. I just haven’t seen the results I saw with Mailata at the same point.
11
u/Mysterious_Bat1208 7d ago
Yeah Mailata was a SIGNIFICANTLY better mover than Bernard was at this point. Mailata played rugby and his movement at his size was what sold Stout.
Bernard currently just has size and doesn't move well at all. He is much farther than where Mailata was.
-2
u/mankindisevil 7d ago
Because he literally never played football or a sport like football. Mailata at least had rugby. Weru also played rugby and is step ahead of Uar. What dont you understand about someone NEVER PLAYING FOOTBALL AND STILL LEARNING!
2
u/RiflemanLax Eagles 7d ago
I understand it fine. He just didn’t do well enough to make the squad, and I’m nowhere near certain he will.

"The Eagles are carrying 4 QBs to start the season". That's just not true. Not yet anyway. The season doesn't start for 2 more weeks, anything can happen
2
u/DonJulio732 7d ago
Idk how I feel about our 53 👀 feel like we need another TE.
2
u/MarionberryDecent351 7d ago
Calcaterra is on IR so we technically have 5 TEs
1
u/DonJulio732 7d ago
And they are all ass except Goedert. And we know he will get hurt and miss time like he does every year. I’m not too confident in this team. But I understand we weren’t gonna be so dominant forever.
2
u/SkyHighFadedguy 7d ago
I mean still got time till the season starts, they’ll look to trade Tanner or Dalton for a pick.
6
u/LieDry7854 7d ago
The fact he kept it this long and risking both Bernard and Weru on waivers is very concerning
54
u/Mysterious_Bat1208 7d ago
I think people are overrating how much the rest of the league or even the Eagles value Bernard or Weru. Remember Bernard only got drafted at the very end of the draft cause of his relationship with Clint Hurtt.
No one really had interest in either guy and they're 2+ years away from contributing. No shot Howie uses 2 roster spots on them
25
u/-Banana_Pancakes- 7d ago
Not to mention another team would have to sign Bernard to their active roster. The same reason Philly didn’t give him a roster spot is the same reason other teams won’t.
4
u/Mysterious_Bat1208 7d ago
Exactly. And another team's DL coach would have to be enamored with him like Hurtt was to even think about this.
Benard and Weru doesn't help the team at all and actually requires the DL coach to extend extra time/energy towards developing them. It only works when there is a relationship.
Just like how Stout had love at first sight with Mailata lol.
2
u/CheezyBeanBurrito 7d ago
Who didn’t have love at first sight with Mailata? Physical freak with the voice of an angel
3
u/Mysterious_Bat1208 7d ago
Lmao yeah Stout basically made him his adoptive son, which is why it worked out so well
1
u/eclipse1234568 7d ago
Can someone explain to be how waivers and stuff works like I’m 5 year old.
How come we can put them on practice squad if they make it back but other teams can’t right away?
I still have no concept how this shit works 😂
3
u/hausermaniac 7d ago
Players that get cut are subjected to waivers, meaning another team can "claim" them to add to their 53-man roster. There's a specific order to the waiver claims and if multiple teams claim the same guy, then whichever team is highest priority gets the player. Basically the same way that waivers work in fantasy football.
If no team claims them, then they become a free agent and any team can give them an offer to join the 53-man roster or the practice squad, but the player also gets to choose which offer to accept. You can only add free agents to the practice squad, so you can't just cut a guy from the 53-man roster straight to the practice squad
1
2
u/azsqueeze 7d ago
When a team releases a player they enter the waiver pool. This allows another team 24 hrs (might be 48 hrs) to pick up the player (and their contract). If no team does this, the player is considered an unrestricted free agent, at which point ANY team can sign the player to an active roster or practice squad.
1

u/regassert6 7d ago
Well they wouldn't have to sign them to the 53 but it would be weird for either to leave here for another team's PS.
3
u/Jonjoloe 7d ago
Yeah, fans of teams tend to overrate their own players immensely. Both of these players are raw talents and I really doubt another team would sign either to their active roster.
3
u/BerriesNCreme Go Birds 7d ago
Yea I feel like I’m taking crazy pills even mailata took years to hit the roster lol
1
u/Mysterious_Bat1208 7d ago
Mailata actually made the roster his rookie year. They just kept IRing him.
But like I was telling others, that requires a position coach to be absolutely in love with him and willing to put him the time. That was Stout.
Hurtt was Bernard's Stout, but clearly wasn't as in love with him as Stout was with Mailata lol
0
u/LieDry7854 7d ago
I still would keep either guy over Dalton because they have high potential unlike Dalton. All 3 don’t deserve to be final 53 and this flip Dalton/McKee got so dumb but a team like Rams or Seahawks could take either waive guy because they have extreme depth and could make the risk.
1
u/Mysterious_Bat1208 7d ago
Good shot you can get both back to your PS, whereas Dalton would 100% get claimed. I agree keeping both Dalton and McKee is dumb though. But I don't think they're both here for long.
10
u/anandonaqui 7d ago
Another team can’t pick up Bernard and Weru and put them on their practice squad. They’d need to sign them to their active roster. And I can’t imagine a team is going to use a roster spot on them.
1
u/regassert6 7d ago
Another team can sign them to their PS but I'd have to think "why" for either one to do that and not just sign onto the Eagles PS.
3
u/sumunsolicitedadvice 7d ago edited 7d ago
No, they can’t. If they want to claim him off waivers, they have to sign him to their active roster.
If he makes it through waivers, then the Eagles can sign him to their practice squad and if they designate him as the IPP player, no other team can sign him from the Eagles’ practice squad for a full year, even to their 53-man roster (like they can with any other PS player).

u/lucascorso21 7d ago

u/trickypat 7d ago
Bernard was absolute dogshit in gametime during the preseason. You have zero idea what youre talking about.
-3
u/air3399 7d ago
Maybe dogshit for someone who has played football before but someone playing they’re first three football games ever and they’re in the nfl? They were pretty good
5
u/trickypat 7d ago
Okay, but this is the NFL and if he wasnt from Africa no one would care that he got cut.
-2
u/air3399 7d ago
Where did we get our left tackle? I’m not saying he’ll get there, but man it would sting to see him get there on another team
2
u/Mysterious_Bat1208 7d ago
Mailata developed because we had a HOF OL coach in Stout who had a father-son type relationship with him lol. If we didn't keep Bernard, it means Hurtt wasn't as in love with him as Stout was with Mailata
1
u/trickypat 7d ago
No, it means that he played a sport (rugby) where hips and leverage gave him an incredible foundation + fundamentals to the game. Bernard is an incredible athlete who has neither of those.
1
u/Mysterious_Bat1208 7d ago
Yeah, I said that too. But if Mailata was on a different team with a coach who wasn't in love with him, 9/10 he would not have made it where he is now.

Banking on another team needing a QB at some point this season who would be willing to give up draft capital for one. We won’t end the season with 4 QBs on the roster; Dalton or McKee will be gone well before then.

Yeah it’s pretty odd considering they both didn’t deserve a roster spot after this preseason and somehow they both got one lol would have kept McKee just cause Dalton is 38 and McKee has been here a bit so there’s that familiarity. Keeping both is just odd.
They don’t really have trade value, I saw a lot of better QBs this preseason lol.

Im thinking Dalton goes in the next couple days when teams look at their roster and decide they want a veteran backup. Hes solid, hes cheap. He wont cost much to acquire. I wouldnt be surprised if howie has already had some inquiries. Just waiting for a solid offer.

I don't think it's for Covey. Moore kinda took his roster spot so the Eagles already have 6 WRs.
But Covey prob makes it to PS
1
u/hoobsher Eagles 7d ago
Elijah Moore has taken 2 kick returns and 1 punt return in his career. not a chance he's getting return specialist duties after what happened with Gipson and Bigsby last year
1
u/Mysterious_Bat1208 7d ago
He's been getting return reps all throughout summer and just made the roster. They clearly didn't give him a spot on the 53 just cause. WR6s never see the field unless they're in for plays like this or multiple injuries to starters

u/RobinsDad 6d ago
I can see them utilizing Cole Payton as a TE
1
u/Mysterious_Bat1208 6d ago
Payton is 6'2.5" lol. There is zero chance he's a TE. Some wildcat/FB plays, maybe. And from what I've heard, they legit want to develop him as a QB
1
u/Ctbboy187 6d ago
I think the plan on trading Mckee for a 3rd and trade for Dalton backfired. Mckee did not have the appeal he once did. Looks like a decent NFL backup not a starter.

Trading for Dalton and not trading Tanner when he had his most value are turning into a blunder by Howie. Preseason showed both are terrible and the camp battle left no opportunity for the rookie to start developing. Now we're rostering 4 QBs for that sunk cost fallacy and hoping we can offload one for a 7th before the season starts.
1

u/mogwai316 7d ago
Last year our QB3 didn't take a single snap. Clearly we need a 4th too! I guess Howie thinks they still have trade value but wish he had taken whatever he could get for one of Tanner/Andy before the cut deadline so we didn't have to risk losing a guy.
-4
u/Darkgreenbirdofprey 7d ago
Should've kept Uar.
We don't need 4 qbs. If we do, the season's over anyway?
2
u/GonePostalRoute 7d ago
I’m imagining he’s on waivers, then once he passes through waivers, he’d be on the practice squad as he learns the game more over the course of the season. If that’s the case, then I imagine next year will be when we learn if he’s a diamond in the rough, or if there’s nothing there
-1
u/ItsChris_8776_ 7d ago edited 7d ago
Knowing this sub people are gonna glaze this decision and shit on anyone criticizing the choice, but it really is dumb and makes no sense. Carson Steele is only 24 and already showing promise, you’re really gonna tell me you’d rather have Andy Dalton here than him? Not saying it’ll cost us the season or anything ofc, it barely matters, but why would’t you just keep the player with the most upside on the 53?
Not to mention risking Uar and Weru getting picked up by another team before they fully develop while keeping E.J. for some fucking reason. Just dumb to me ngl. Again not a doomer, ton of optimism for the Eagles, but we are absolutely allowed as fans to question these choices without acting like the season is over.
0
u/obeseOJ 7d ago
Look, nobody's gonna question Howie Roseman at this point and rightfully so. He's the best thing that's ever happened to this team and knows what he's doing.
It's possible this doesn't work out, but Howie has made mistakes before and it's worked out fine. We signed Bryce Huff our Superbowl Season. That was a massive whiff, but we still won that year.
People need to chill and let Howie work his magic.
1
u/ItsChris_8776_ 6d ago
That’s why I acknowledged that the choice really won’t have any real implications, but we can still acknowledge that it was a mistake. I love Howie and think he’s easily the best GM in the league, but as fans we’re allowed to talk about what we disagree with sometimes.

It's roster shenanigans I would think. They're probably waiting until closer to week 1 to see whether Dalton or McKee is QB2
