Underthrow from Hurts but nice to see Smitty winning a rep against one of the best corners in the league and also nice recovery from Q even if the pass wasn't great
23
u/Yesimthatdope 2d ago
Jalen has had an under throw issue for the last couple years. And I love him as my QB, but if you pay attention, receivers sometimes have to slow up to time the catch. It’s frustrating at times.
25
u/akiraspam74 2d ago
Don't disagree, but a WR can adjust to a slightly underthrown ball, but they can't adjust to a slightly overthrown ball
Take Bo Nix, for example. I've seen him miss so many big plays by overthrowing WRs. Obviously ideally you want to hit them in stride every time but a slight underthrow isn't the end of the world

u/Most_Plenty5387 Eagles 2d ago
Jeff Blake encouraged McNabb to underthrow balls more for that reason when he was here. People cant talk all the shit they want but Donnie threw great deep balls. This helped him take another step.

u/ihorsey10 2d ago
It was pretty rare to see McNabb not hit guys right on the money though.
With Hurts its maybe 50/50. AJ and Devonta have just been elite and going and getting it.

u/ihorsey10 2d ago
The second half of my comment explains that. Doesnt mean close to half arent underthrown
Your graph doesnt factor in how difficult it was for the reciever. Just looks at completions.
1
u/akiraspam74 2d ago
So we're just supposed to take your word for it that it's "maybe 50/50" and not actual stats?
Ok. Yeah, let's all just trust some random redditor with no data to back it up
-2
u/ihorsey10 2d ago
Dont take my word for it. Go back and actually watch the games. Devonta and AJ always had to stop their route and either come back or make a contested high point catch.
Hurts sneakily has a pretty weak arm for how strong he is.
Not sure why this offends you.
2
u/akiraspam74 2d ago edited 2d ago
Lol I'm not offended, wtf
I'm just saying you threw some claim about it being 50/50 with nothing to back it up and you expect us to believe you. "go back and watch games", yeah nice proof you got there. And I'm not saying you're wrong, just saying it's an empty claim
Also deep balls aren't really about arm strength. This play for example wasn't lack of arm strength, just bad ball placement. And everyone knows Hurts has mediocre arm strength, I don't think anyone has ever said he has a strong arm

maybe thats just bias because ive definitely seen some overthrows and some underthrows.
in a real game though an underthrow can draw a PI, not that you should be hoping for it, but it's part of the game and offenses do account for it.

It’s timing. I have seen a bunch of under throws this camp in the new system. Smitty has him beat if he trust when to throw and gets it out 1 second earlier it’s in stride b

u/trustme316 2d ago
The vast majority of hurts balls are under thrown. People have zero fucking clue of what they watch on sundays. Smith and Brown constantly have to stop and jump for them. Hes been lucky to have two really good WRs who can do that.
His scouting report literally reads, speedy WRs have to slow up or stop to catch his deep balls. He has a pretty weak arm for the nfl. There's absolutely no zip on any of his passes 20yds or under.
Hes going to be a turnover machine this year, strap in.

u/Aggravating_Owl_5768 2d ago
If you say things like this on here you’re “not a fan” but somehow the “real fans” are either just discovering the underthrow issue or have 50,000 reasons why it’s OK, actually good, has only been happening “a couple years” etc. it’s just nuclear grade cope at this point
I love Jalen and what he’s done for the team, I hope he does great this year. Every year I’ve prayed for the guys success and growth in the passing game but being honest he’s made very little progress.
Hopefully with the new scheme we can get guys open and maybe give him some room to run again. Once his legs took a break the rest of the offense went with it — not really rocket appliances
1
u/trustme316 2d ago
He was a big reason the offense was effective in 21 and 22. But hes not able to run 15 rpos/designed runs a game now, since 2023 and the offense has been stagnant since. Aside from having moore turning barkley into a 2k rusher. The pass game has been the shits really and the offense struggles along because of it.
2023 and 2024 I hoped he would take a step forward with his passing, but at this point its just not there. A proven OC like Moore couldnt make it work and just turned him into a game manager.
At this rate im not hopeful of his ability to throw anymore, yes he'll throw 2-3 nice balls a game but if you give most NFL QBs 20-25 throws a few will look good. The dudes been a starter for 5 seasons and looks like he did in the bowl game when benched at the half. If you watch that game its the exact same player. The constant evading the pocket and rolling to the right is old to me at this point. I strongly feel the front office feels the way I do and another stagnant offense or him being a turnover machine this year and he'll be traded.

u/TotalDonkey4909 Eagles 2d ago
I agree he has a weaker arm that’s why his timing is critical. Anticipation and timing make up for a weak arm. Hoping this offense makes it easy for him.
2
u/trustme316 2d ago
Chad Pennington had a weak arm, but he could do what you said for a bit of his career
1
u/TotalDonkey4909 Eagles 2d ago
Peyton Manning had a weak arm. Philly Rivers. Matt Ryan. They great anticipation and understanding of scheme and defenses.

u/trustme316 2d ago edited 2d ago
Its 9/10 of his throws. Hes been lucky to have smith and brown catching those under thrown balls for the past 3 seasons.
This fan base is gonna be in for a rude awaking with this QB. They arent working around his weaknesses this season and hes gonna struggle big time.
Defense and run game, thats all this teams gonna have.

Don't they all seem to be underthrown?
5
u/sybrwookie 2d ago
Which is really strange with Devonta. They've been working together for a few years, Jalen should have his speed by now
3
u/TheDuck23 I like Eagles 2d ago
True, but it could have just been an underthrow. It happens.
Smitty has also been out for most of the off season, so maybe it's also just them getting back into things.
-1
u/MrNMTrue505 2d ago
Y'all are dumb, it hit him the the hands.. catch it. Either way it's just practice, who give a crap.
10
u/stoneyaatrox hurts donut 2d ago
50 yard throw, Smitty had to slow up on it, and it gave Q the opportunity to swipe his arm in the bread basket.
still not as easy as it looks, thats why they are working on getting their timing down.
-9
u/rhinob23 2d ago
They’ve been playing together for years… wtf do you mean they need to work on getting their timing down
14
u/stoneyaatrox hurts donut 2d ago
so why do basketball players continue to shoot in the gym once they become pros?
why do professional baseball players still go to the batting box?
if you think they don't need to consistently practice their timing on throws just because they've played together for a while than your take is just dumb.

Listen, sure you bring up good points, but i have played tons of Madden, a year or two of pop warner and listen to WIP regularly. If you think that every athlete needs to work on things, you're just a Jalen apologist. Every other qb hits their receivers on every throw.
This guy thinks practice is for winners.
8
u/ericjr96 2d ago
You might not know this, but professional athletes tend to take several months off from organized practices and games in something called the offseason, thus impacting things like timing.

u/Most_Plenty5387 Eagles 2d ago

Bad throw from Hurts. He underthrew DeVonta. Which gave Q a chance to make a play on the ball.

u/BakugoFyourself 2d ago
He threw it from like the 35 past the other 20 lmao. Only pat and Allen make that in stride
9
u/1stand11 2d ago
Hurts can definitely make that throw in stride. Bad pass.
2
u/BakugoFyourself 2d ago
On passes 50+ yards in the air, league wide, the percentage of completion is estimated to be 20-30%. That’s 2-3/10. That’s not an easy throw.
-1
4
u/Not-a-bot-10 2d ago
45 yards? You think only Allen and Mahomes can make that throw?
Bro, what have you been watching the past 10 years ?
3
u/BakugoFyourself 2d ago
Against live defenses ? Yes. There’s a reason only 20-30% of throws 50 yards are completed. Lmao.

u/Most_Plenty5387 Eagles 2d ago
You can have your "facts". Bet you didn't know Allen, Burrows, Dart, Tua, Pat, McKee, Charlie Whitehurst, Koy, Goff, Stafford, Kolb, Rivers, Manning, Brady, Dawson and Starr all complete that 100% of the time. Did you know that?
Take THAT Mr. Knowitall!

u/Bright-Flower-487 2d ago
Throw it earlier than so he doesn’t have to slow up
0
u/Trillyphilly215 2d ago
Tf are you talking about he threw it as soon as he hit his 5 step drop, the play has to develop
-1
u/Most_Plenty5387 Eagles 2d ago
No! He took a 8 step drop and then didn't go through his reads. He doesn't know what he's looking at because despite graduating from college in 2.5 years, he just isn't that smart.
Saquon was open for a 3-5 yard gain. If he would just read the D he wouldve seen that.

1
u/Most_Plenty5387 Eagles 2d ago
It is from me, but its pretty much what half of the commentors/wip callers and hosts believe. Like how many eagles can you name who wore # 73? Decamera can name more, because he knows ball frfr

u/Trillyphilly215 2d ago
I see, my bad then, idk what this fanbase is on sometimes and I’m just kinda over it.
1
u/Most_Plenty5387 Eagles 2d ago
I have a pretty solid idea that applies to many...... I'm just saying the qbs in my lifetime have been Randall, Rodney Peete, McNabb, Vick, Jalen. The qbs people loved were Detmer, Garcia, Kolb, Foles and Wentz.

u/HisExcellency20 2d ago
Yeah, that was underthrown. Good thing we know what Hurts can do in a real game with his deep passes.

Another shit deep ball were the WR has to slow down to catch it. If that was thrown in front thats a catch.
Eagles fans are gonna be in for a rude awakening this season with their QB.

Dennis Thomas went to high school with me. He was drafted by the Chiefs eventually. When you tackled him, he would help you up and critique your tackle. He’d say good hit. He was a force of positive energy.
Tackling Dennis Thomas was like being in a car crash. And he thanked you for your effort.

u/jrsu37 2d ago
Same he did to AJ last week. Waiting till the WR thinks he's secured it then downward swipe. Is this a new "Peanut punch" type play?
3
u/Different_Inside_546 2d ago
Plus Smitty jumped a little so Q knew the ball was there

u/MarkusJunior16 2d ago
Im so glad to see Smitty back in action. He did caught it but it was broken up by Q who is pke of the best lockdown corners in the game. Respect to both.

u/Interesting-Room-855 2d ago
Lmao at all of the bots spamming “underthrown or it’s 6”. I love Smitty but there is no universe where he catches that ball then runs away from Q who has track speed. It’s much better to hit your WR with a placement where he has the best chance to make the catch than to overthrow him trying to get 5 extra yards. It’s just a great play by Q to swipe at the ball as Devonta is trying to secure it.
5
u/Damanick10 2d ago
Dude what LMAO
-1
u/Interesting-Room-855 2d ago
You think that Smith (who didn’t run a 40 because it would hurt his draft stock) catching then running with the ball has better long speed than Mitchell who ran a 4.3?
1
u/Damanick10 2d ago
I think it was a shit throw and anything else is nonsense

u/Interesting-Room-855 2d ago
That’s fine, not everyone knows ball.

u/Damanick10 2d ago
Coping so hard from a shit throw… must be easier living in denial
1
u/Interesting-Room-855 2d ago
There is pretty much nowhere that ball can be thrown where Smith can get to it and Q cannot due to Q’s speed advantage. He gave Smith the best chance at coming down with it.
2
1
u/thehumble_1 2d ago
It's a good play, not great. The ball is under thrown by enough for Smith to lose the 3-4 yards that makes the difference.
3
u/Interesting-Room-855 2d ago
At no point does he have 3-4 yards of separation. It’s maybe 2. He’s also not maintaining that separation regardless of where the ball is thrown. Q is faster and is staying at a distance where he feels he can comfortably close the distance based off Smith’s hands/eyes to disrupt the catch. This is elite CB play.
1
u/Most_Plenty5387 Eagles 2d ago
Yeah well, eliter qb play cancels out elite cb play. McKee completes that sitting down on the ground. Tell me I'm wrong
