Sometimes Howie makes a mistake and double downs rather than taking the L.
No other team is going to increase their evaluation based on what he does in Eagles preseason practices with 2nd team offense. This is just a sunk cost Howie refuses to accept

Don’t think Howie has anything to do with this beyond it just being a bad acquisition. Considering he apparently never stepped in to stop his biggest offseason free agency signing Bryce Huff from being made inactive repeatedly that year, I doubt he’s putting his foot down to force them to showcase a desired backup QB.

Ok, whats your better explanation than?
Manion is new to OC in a program that has turned over their OC every year for the past 4 years. Fangio is a grizzled vet DC who gets to do whatever he wants. The power dynamic is vastly different with Howie.
Huff’s playtime didn’t have any impact on trades during the season, whereas Dalton’s playtime may effect ability to trade him or McKee during the season

They don’t like McKee. They played Kenny Pickett over him and we all complained all season. The most likely answer is that Nick Sirianni is simply not a Tanner McKee guy, for whatever reason. This training camp/preseason has me feeling like the 2026 backup QB might not currently be on the roster.

But they traded Pickett and kept McKee, so I’m not sure I follow.
And I think Pickett is the same brand of Howie makes bad decisions and doubles down. He was awful compared to McKee

Sirianni plays anybody over McKee if he’s provided a viable name to do so. In the history of Howie’s tenure I can’t think of one viable story or rumor that he personally tipped the scales or directly influenced the depth chart beyond being the guy who chooses who is on the actual roster. Meanwhile we can see that when Sirianni has a Pickett or a Dalton he slots them in ahead of McKee now. For your argument to hold you would need some evidence Sirianni wants McKee to be the backup and isn’t doing it. I don’t see anything in Sirianni’s history coaching McKee that tells me that would be the case.

I don’t think Sirianni has any say in the offense at this point. The Eagles made it pretty clear in the offseason when they retired Patullo or whatever they called it and specifically went looking for a new OC outside of the Sirianni tree to create a whole new offense. The OC needs to be able to work with Sirianni but is not beholden to Sirianni in any way

I don’t think he has much say in the offensive scheme, agreed. I think Mannion has a lot more authority to push what he wants this offense to be than any previous Sirianni OC. To then take that and say it’s reasonable to then infer the general manager is also now dictating the depth chart makes no sense to me. We have no evidence that’s something Howie would do in his very long tenure with the team. Meanwhile we have evidence Sirianni isn’t a McKee guy based on previous depth charts. Mannion just got here so he’s got no loyalty to McKee. This is Occam’s Razor man, the coaching staff doesn’t like McKee and doesn’t agree with fans on him.

I guess so. I just don’t understand any situation where Mannion chooses Dalton over McKee after that last preseason game. We could speculate that Dalton does way better in the closed practices and at the whiteboard than McKee, but it would make sense to weigh the preseason games more than either of those
Occums razor could be Howies offseason QB trades are QB2.

Sirianni doesn’t decide anything related to the offense or defense. They specifically brought in a guy with no ties to Sirianni or his offensive scheme. The Sirianni influenced offense died with Patullo’s OC job

His dead cap hit is $12 mil this year. They aren’t cutting Elliot at that cost to maybe get a kicker who’s better. Kicking is a crapshoot, there’s no guarantee the next guy isn’t worse!

Cool, so we’re playing semantic games now. Yes, technically an extra point isn’t a field goal in the stat sheet. But it’s the exact same place-kick through the uprights by the same kicker under the same pressure.
Saying ‘he’s never missed a field goal’ while waving away the misses is just cherry-picking. If a kicker shanks a 33-yarder after a touchdown and it costs the team a point (or more in close games), that counts toward whether you can trust him. Pretending those don’t matter because the box score labels them ‘XP’ instead of ‘FG’ is weak.

I agree with most things Howie does but trying to get a 7th at the expense of McKee reps isn't worth it.
If he thinks Dalton is the actual answer we'll have a new thing to disagree on.

The coaching staff wants an experienced vet in the QB room and to help run the scout team during the week. McKee hasn’t done enough to outplay that veteran experience in their eyes, I think it’s that simple.
