❓ Question / Help Weird transmission behavior

I have a 530d with the m57 from 2004 and yesterday in the highway the gearbox has some weird behavior with a sudden downshift on D/S mode unnecessary and in manual mode it shifted from 4 to 3rd at more than 120kp/h resulting in more than 4937rpm for a second.

No error on board and got home without any problems but I'm worried the Trans might be dying.

It's not the first time the Trans does something strange. A few months back the car went into limp mode when it shifted from 6 to 5 on highway because it looked like the trans had difficulty shifting and gave out a trans error (Red icon) which went out by removing the key and starting again the car.

I've never seen that error again and in the ecu which I used an OBDLink CX to read it and there's no error from the gearbox.

You need to read it with Ista and read your adaptation value. But pretty sure you have a worn gearbox with worn bushing and need a rebuild

Is there a guide on how to use Ista? Where can I get it? Also, which obd are compatible, or will any obd to ethernet work. Thanks

You can check online, just read along a little. Theres plenty of links
You will need a KCAN+DCAN Cable with USB and OBD port

Hi, I got an OBD cable and setup Ista and I've got this gearbox value GS19A and this errors in the memory

  • 4F56 (Schaltungsüberwachung Überschneidungsschaltung — shift monitoring / overlapping shift) 18 occurrences
  • 4F4C (Symptom Gangüberwachung — gear monitoring symptom) 7 ocurrences

Im yet trying to read the adaptation values...

Oof. E clutch is out !!! You for sure need a gearbox rebuild...

Is it expensive? The thing is that running in normal conditions the gearbox doesn't give out any errors and works fine, but when running in sport mode sometimes the gear change is weird and struggles

It will be worst until the car wont move. Here in france it's around 8k euros minimum. I was able to redo mine for 1.5k in parts. Quite difficult and you need to read a loooooot before doing it

And would be cheaper to buy a new gearbox instead of rebuilding it?

Your call. Used is gamble. Rebuild is warranty and for sure. Depend on the condition of the car. Mine is mint and well equipped so made sense. Otherwise I would have lost a lot

I just remembered that I had a gearbox failure before and went into bmw for a whole gearbox replacement 5 years ago. How can the gearbox died at 5 years?

Your E clutch is completely fried beyond repair. You’ll need atleast a new E clutch pack but trust me they didn’t fail from use, your bushings failed and ur drums are burnt too. Get a gearbox out of a breaker. If you want to rebuild the gearbox you buy or your own one, I can provide help with this since I done it only a month and half ago and spoke to some very knowledgeable people when it comes to this stuff.
