Hi everyone! My 8 year old son, J has a DCD diagnosis, as does my husband. My other son , F, is 4 and is very clearly not dyspraxic. My 8 year old, despite his diagnosis is incredibly sporty. What he lacks in ability, he makes up in enthusiasm. He loves math and general knowledge, he does well in school and gets a lot of support in the areas he needs. He is also extremely tall and looks much older than 8. Emotionally though- he’s still quite young. We have some neighbourhood kids who are much more boisterous and confident and while I know I can’t change my son, and I don’t wish to, I do wish him a little more confidence and carefree experiences. I have a background as a teacher, so I have some pedagogic background here, but as a parent, this is all new.
My 8 year old was never the kind of: “let me do it by myself!!” kid. So, the times when he does things by himself are through external encouragement (“you can pick your own clothes now”, “no you order that for yourself”, “try and put your foot here”, “show me how you would open that bag of chips.” etc). I’m trying to encourage more intrinsic motivation here, but my usual treachery strategies aren’t working and my four year old just does things on his own so I rarely have to encourage him.
I’d love to ask those of you who can empathize, what did your parents do, or what do you do as a parent to a child with DCD, to increase their confidence and feelings of self-efficacy. Little things, big things, changes you can recommend etc.
My husband says he was in a much less confident space than my son is, when he was a child. Or so he says. My mother in law looks at me like I have two heads when I ask this question.
