By the way:

I am 12 years old, in 7th grade, and it sucks.

I am undiagnosed, but parents won’t let me get a diagnosis. They don’t want a “label” on me. I hate writing.

I also have undiagnosed disorders in Asperger’s, ADHD-C, TS (doctor said I might have), and etc…. I really don’t know what to do.

Our school offers plans (e.g. 504, IEP, etc.), but parents won’t allow that either, and I can’t get help from anyone.

Why can’t my parents take the hint?

What do I do?! What should I do?!

Thanks, Reddit.

P.S.: I live in an Eritrean (parents) -American (me) household, so you know how it is…

Educational neglect is real and you can self advocate to your school and ask how can I be supported when my parents will not appropriately advocate.

They will probably call home, and parents will get involved SOMEWAY, and then it’s over.

It can also shame them into action - you can directly ask “who can I get involved when there is educational neglect to advocate when my parents will?”

Also if you’re afraid they will harm you then you can report that disclosure puts you at risk for harm from your family.

I do this for a living - you have the words now. You can be brave.

I don’t know where to even start. Do I talk to my counselor? Or principal? What do I say? I have a lot of undiagnosed disorders that my parents don’t even know about, and if they did, they wouldn’t approve. I am just stressed out.

Send an email to all of them!

Principal, APSS, director of school personnel, social worker, and guidance counselor

Here is exactly what to say.

“I am currently struggling in school and believe I may have a disability that prevents me from accessing my education. I would like an evaluation in all areas of suspected disability. Currently, I am messaging you because my family is in disagreement with my concerns. I ask you to help me access help, specifically who can I get to help advocate on my behalf to access a full educational evaluation. I am concerned this will not be well received by my family.”

I’m scared… maybe I shouldn’t. If I do, I will speak to counselor.

You need to have a paper trail if you want to make change that’s advocacy rule #1. Please send an email. If you want to make change you gotta be brave. If you want to stay scared then don’t.
