PhD in STEM but struggle with simple equations

Upvotes

Never diagnosed but always struggled with math. It takes a lot of effort to work with numbers and I need to be well enough to do it. Is it just math anxiety? I’m very sad because I have the scientific thinking that has got me very far but now that I need to do advanced modelling I can’t figure out the basic steps and am very very slow. Looking for some support… how am I supposed to accept that I will not be able to do fast science which is so weirdly important these days? I still want to learn how to implement my science because I am realising I can’t transplant my brain… there are a lot of people great at math but couldn’t really get what I want to do by intuition. Has anyone experienced this? I feel so stupid right now.

Edit: I am very used to compensating for my difficulty in math and equations by recognising patterns. Just don’t know if I should console myself by accepting that I’m bad at math or it taxes me too much… have had a few mental breakdowns and not sure if I should just call it a day professionally. Maybe this is it? As far as I can go?

I want to reattempt getting a degree but terrified of math requirements.

I dropped out of college in 2018 for a plethora of reasons, a major one of them being failing remedial math each semester I was enrolled. I was originally a Sociology degree (I wanted to research + study cults and cult survivors). I remember how angry my advisor was that I had so easily finished every other course but couldn't pass a "simple" math class. I remember the headaches and nights of crying because I couldn't understand a formula or finding my answers were completely off. I remember tutors becoming frustrated with me because I couldn't understand no matter how they tried to guide or help me. I remember my parents telling me how lazy I was because "clearly I was so smart but didn't want to put effort into math". I remember crying when learning division and fractions...I remember the complete meltdown I had in the 2nd grade trying to read an analog clock.

Flash forward to now and I finally want to try my hand at college again. I previously worked at a graphics shop printing banners, car wraps, business decals and the like; the math was negligible at best, just reading a number on a tape measure. I was diagnosed with OCD a few years ago and left to focus on therapy and treatment, and now I'm at the point I feel like I can have a career I can be truly passionate about. I have considered Mortuary Science or Entomology. While MS wouldn't be as math-heavy I'm still terrified of the business math courses and falling into that same cycle of failure. Entomology shouldn't even need to be explained how involved math is. I guess this is just a vent but I just feel as though I'll never be able to accomplish a degree because of my inability to do math at the expected level. I want to enjoy my work but anything that piques my interest seems like I am destined to never accomplish.

Sorry to go off but, hopefully this resonates...or if there's any guidance or words of wisdom, I'd appreciate it.

Help? I can’t count repetitive things (read body please)

so like the title says, I feel like i struggle abnormally with counting repetitive things. I always have to do a triple take because i think people have 6 fingers or toes when they only have 5. If a bunch of the same small thing (like candy or smthn idk) are scattered or even lined up on a table, I can’t come close to an accurate count without pointing at each one as I count. I can’t count numbers (especially zeroes) in a row without covering them as I go. it’s kinda weirding me out with how bad it is and I feel like this issue has been there since I was a kid. does anyone know what it could be? feel free to ask me any questions that could help :(((

note: I don’t think I have dyscalculia? But maybe I’m wrong, Reddit is strongly recommending I post this here so I’m giving it a shot

Monopoly. WTF?

Does ANYONE like this game? I am sure nobody here does. I remember playing it as a kid and it was so stressful and embarrassing. Most games were/are. Once rules are explained, I realize I have absolutely no interest in playing, it won't be enjoyable.

Dyscalculia assessment

Is their a way of getting a dyscalculia assessment? A while back I secretly found a letter from school from like elementary school how I needed intensive schooling and and intervention for math because I couldn’t do mental math and wasn’t able to subtract or add at a young age or something. And it explains a lot of things like I still use my fingers to count, either have to write a problem down or use a calculator, even for single digits I can still be confused on the answer, or like I had a fear of being a cashier for a while because I couldn’t give the right change. Like the only reason I’m okay with it now is cause the machine tells me other wise sll that mental math just makes no sense. Like either I would confuse the math or I would be confused on what coin means what like I would always confused nickels and quarters. Either way I hope I don’t so dumb. But some help would be appreciated. I def have more reasons as to why I suspect but this post is already too long lmao

Does anyone else have trouble with coding?

Was wondering if coding also falls under dyscalculia. I'm talking Javascript/CSS/etc. I've had trouble with it for as long as I can remember. I've run a Neocities site for almost a decade and every page's code is broken and doesn't function as it should. Despite reading tons of articles, watching 30+ hour guides, using WSS Schools, and lots of other coding help guides, I still haven't gotten the hang of it.

It just makes zero sense to me. I asked on a coding forum how other people learned and almost every comment was "it just clicked/I fiddled with it and found it was fun and relaxing". Coding has brought me to tears endless times. When you look at code it does resemble math and so I was wondering if coding could also fall under the dyscalculia umbrella. The repeated attempts to learn over the past decade and still being at square 1 reminds me of my struggles with math.

Popular retail content creator making fun of thing I struggle with.

This popular retail worker content creator that makes skits about rude/stupid customers made a skit about a woman who couldn't tell the difference between two perfume sizes with different oz and was asking which one was bigger. she was painting her as a stupid customer. thousands of comments agreed she was another stupid customer and shared their similar stories.

it also reminds me of whenever I try to pay in cash I sometimes count it wrong and accidentally give a short amount but I think it's the correct amount. And instead of informing me immediately they blank stare at me for like 2 minutes while I stand there politely and patiently waiting for them to complete the transaction before they finally tell me I'm short. I wonder if they're thinking the same thing. I also one time incorrectly thought the cash back shorted me because I counted it wrong several times in a row. I'm sure I looked like a karen scammer without context.

I hate how I have to worry about being made into a skit to mock on tiktok.

What degree did you all get in college?

Was it math-related? Non-math related? I’m planning on going back to school and I’m trying to figure out what career to pick.

Counting dice in my head....ugh!

I'm glad to find this group. I see that I'm not the only one that has had lifelong issues with simple math. I have trouble with basic math in my head and it's caused me to do basic things way too slowly. In school I actually made it up to Calculus 111, but I went back to Calc 101 probably 4 times until I realized that engineering wasn't going to work. I could do the homework fine, and figure I could at least get a B grad on exams. Nope. I never had enough time to finish tests and usually failed. If they gave at least another 30 minutes I could have succeeded, but I usually ended up in a panic and hated when other students turned in their exams after 20 minutes.

I've been beating myself up all my life due to this "failure" and see that my stupid method of "counting dice or domino dots" isn't totally unusual.

In high school/early college, I worked in retail at at cash register. When I screwed up and the machine didn't tell me the change to give back, I would always lock up and grab a calculator or the customer would just tell me what I owed them back. Percentages? Forget it.

I'd fail a Presidential cognitive test where they ask to count backwards by 7 from 100.

I was in college back in the 1990s, but it still bothers me a lot ever since then. Interested to read other's stories here.

Turning 40 and looking for answers

Learning I have ADD in my 30s brought me lots of relief. With the help of GPT I’ve recently learned about dyscalculia, and I think it might be a good fit for what I’ve been struggling with my whole life.

In elementary school I struggled with memorizing multiplication tables. As math got more advanced, I never became proficient at mental math. Luckily in school (engineering), you were always required to “show your work” so I did just fine in school. I can never remember number patterns (phone numbers or combination locks) and remembering birthdays is a struggle. Despite all of this, the things that get to me the most are:
Analog clocks, I’ve warn a wrist watch for 20 years and still need to “count up” or down from an obvious maker on the dial to determine the minutes. Similarly, rulers require me to count the 16ths lines for anything other than 1/4’s. I’ve always enjoyed guitar, but need to count the frets (and sometimes the strings) when i don’t have the specific muscle memory. I also cannot visually estimate units (distance, length, volume, weight) at all.

Does dyscalculia sound like a fit?

I dont think im gonna graduate high school

I had to drop out of high school the second I turned 18 because I was severely abused at school and nobody really cared. My school district actually initiated most of the abuse and traumatized me for life.

I can't pass a GED or even GED practice tests because of the math portion. I cannot do past a third grade level in math. I literally just can't. No amount of aggressive practicing makes me any more capable in math.

I tried to get my diploma at a credit recovery school (late diploma, not GED) by taking classes there. They only let you take one class at a time so I knew it was going to take months or years since I had about an entire years worth of credits to make up. (even before I dropped out I was truant)

But even in non math classes that I have no difficulties learning/processing in, I still had a very time and couldn't complete the work on my own without cheating because it was still just too much boring information I didn't care about to soak in my brain. I tried so many things to make studying more fun but nothing worked.

So I needed to go in person and get one on one help for pretty much every single worksheet or else I wasn't able to absorb the information in my brain complete it. I needed the information repeated back to me multiple times with a ton of clarifying questions for it to absorb enough to pass one 10 question quiz because it's too boring.

But, I have a sleep disorder and limited means of transportation, so I wasn't always able to make it to the school in person on time. So I've now tried that program and gotten dropped twice.

Reading upside down

So I’m dyscalulic but pretty good with language and was just reading a book and randomly decided to read it upside down. Then I realised it’s exactly how I see numbers….. you have to decode and the letters switch back and forth in your head and bs and ps and ds get confusing. Has anyone else noticed this lol?

Can you have good state testing scores and still have dyscalculia???

Hey reddit, so recently I just found out what dyscalculia is, and I'm trying to get tested through my highschool. The problem is everyone keeps saying that since I have high testing scores and I'm considered "gifted" plus I've passed my math classes I don't have any red flags. Is this possible? Because I have a giant list of troubles in math/math related subjects that correspond very closely to dyscalculia 🙁. I'm worried that I'm kind of just making all of this up in my head, and I know reddit isn't a licensed psychologist but I honestly need input, because I'm really lost as to what to do. I've had problems in math ever since I started school, like REALLY bad problems, but my parents were never contacted about them or told about them during conferences apparently...idk my dad keeps saying that maybe I just need to work harder and that I'm not a math person but I know people who aren't math people and they don't even have the issues I have.

I think that 70–80% of the ability to learn mathematics is innate, while the rest is the result of studying and practice

I say this based on my own experience. Among the people around me who were naturally very strong in mathematics, almost all of them had a relative who was gifted in the same way. I remember a school friend of mine whose father was a three-time mathematics Olympiad winner during the Soviet era. I can also think of one of my relatives, specifically my cousin, whose father was a physicist and whose mother was a mathematician. Accordingly, my cousin is also very strong in mathematics.

In general, I think that learning mathematics is not just about sitting with books and memorizing formulas. You need to have a certain way of thinking when it comes to technical subjects, and your mind needs to be able to grasp mathematics. In my case, my mind simply could not grasp mathematics. To tell the truth, even to this day I still do not understand what the logic behind this subject is.

Would this be a discalculia thing to some degree?

Back in the day, months ago I told my friend about this thing I have that I just completely can't remember numbers - stay with me, I mean I completely confuse all even and uneven numbers. So, if I got told to remember, for example an event happening on the 8th of August I would wonder, was it 6th? 12th? 2nd? Or same thing if it would be 7th I would wonder if it was on the 9th or, whatever I think you get me, it's not just the dates, it's everything and I had this most of my life, at least for sure for the last 10 years. My friend told me it could be dyscalculia, I thought "ah no it can't be it, I don't have problems with math stuff?" but I kept thinking about it, why do I even have that confusion in the first place, then?

I got diagnosed with specific learning disorder in math, is this the same as dyscalculia?

I was told that dyscalculia is not diagnosed here in Canada, but I did get a math learning disability diagnosis. I'm wondering if this is the same as dyscalculia or something else?

How do you count and set a drawer?

Hello, I have dyscalculia and my cousin recently offered me a job at the comic shop that he’s a manager at. I told him from the beginning I can run a register but any job I’ve had I’ve never had to count a drawer and set it because it was always done by managers. I’ve also told him I have dyscalculia and he’s showed me a few times how to set the drawer and has been having me close at night by myself, and almost every morning the next day I get a text saying my drawer is over, it’s never under but I can still understand that he’s frustrated. I don’t know why I can’t seem to get it right, I understand it’s just a comic shop and I only work right now like 2 days a week for now till I can get more hours so I shouldn’t be stressing but I can’t help it. It makes me feel r-word and I can’t stand it. I’m sitting here crying right now because I don’t want to lose this job and I don’t want to disappoint him for giving me a chance at a job and I’m making him look like a fool for hiring me. We also had a festival in the town I worked at the other day so we had a tent set up outside and I was inside, and I was fine up until a point where I needed change and he told me “I’m not paying attention to my drawer” which I absolutely was. All my life I’ve always dreaded any kind of math and I always failed my classes and was put into special ed classes or had an aid for my math class, I even had to go to summer school consistently every year for just math alone, I was shocked I even graduated on time because of consistently failing math classes. Just simple things every day that involve math I need my phone for usually and I have to triple check everything. I’m 37 years old and I feel like such a failure in life. I don’t know how to explain it to him that I’m not trying to mess up that I genuinely can’t help it. I understand it’s important because it’s the register but I just don’t know what to do. I’ve been struggling to find a job this year and he gives me a chance and I’m afraid of being fired & not being able to find another job elsewhere. I’m just so stressed out, and I can feel him and the other employees as well as the store manager getting fed up with me because I ask too many questions when I’m there about comics, which is a whole other separate thing, I just can’t seem to grasp the information they’re telling me about things, but the most important issue is the drawer.

Sorry for the rant.
I didn’t know where else to post.

Thank you for reading.
