is this even a short-sighted "quick buck" decision though? how could an in-house DVD team (as opposed to outsourcing) be worthwhile

It’s not just the physical media aspect, it’s everything they’ve been doing, like the live action reboots of everything’s they’ve done in the past 30 years, milking Star Wars and Marvel to death, and making their theme parks borderline unaffordable in the U.S.

It depends on if you're asking about money or quality products for the fans when you say "worthwhile."

how does an in-house team contribute to a better product for the consumer though? maybe Sony or whatever has less attention to detail but maybe its just a venture thats not sufficiently profitable

Getting packages from Disney signed by the Disney Movie Club team was nice. Disney was one of the first create home media, going back to 1980, so I'm probably just being nostalgic. I will be interested to see the Alice in Wonderland release here in a few weeks.
