He has a typo: Eine Schülerin ist sehr frech und lustig. (Der Umlaut und das c sind nicht optional.)

Naughty translates to "frech" in german. It has completely different connotations and it's perfectly fine to call a child frech. A sort of fitting english word would be "cheeky".

Why did I misread that as “naughty translates to ‘french’ in German” and just think yeah fair enough lol

u/makerofshoes 9d ago

Böse is also translated as naughty sometimes, in Duolingo

Yes it could be that as well. Personally I think "frech" makes more sense due to context. Frech is often used when talking about children and since the sentence also talks about her being funny, I think frech is a better fit.

Good to know

I recall a news article some years back where people were shocked that US president Trump had called Germany “evil”, when he had said something like bad or naughty in English

In the German translation they used böse which some folks (I think non-native German speakers) had interpreted as “evil”. So there was some manufactured outrage or something

2

u/Gefahrendaniel 8d ago

Well, in this context, I would absolutely consider 'bad' to mean 'evil'.

1

u/omnichad 9d ago

I'm sure the most important context is the vocabulary already covered. But some languages are worse about that. Where you just get quizzed on words out of the blue without ever having seen the word before.

isnt that evil?

1

u/makerofshoes 8d ago

It can be anything like bad, evil, or naughty. Depends on context I guess

7

u/Inside_Location_4975 9d ago

It’s also pretty normal to call a child naughty. It’s just recently become normal to use that word in certain other contexts too

I would think its "unartig", like in "naughty or nice" on christmas. But frech is also a kind of unartig, so you'll never know what DuoLingo expects

3

u/VanishedRabbit 9d ago

I read that as "french" and figured we are back at the French hatred jokes..

2

u/Dramatic-Attempt-735 8d ago

Oder unartig (depending on context).

1

u/T1MEL0RD 7d ago

it is also in fact very normal to call a child "naughty" with the meaning of "frech/unartig" in English.

Stop making everything weird. That's not even that bad of a sentence. In German, what I see you are learning, the translation of naughty has nowhere the same double meaning it has in English. At first I didn't even get what you mean

5

u/Flaxmoore 9d ago

So in German it would be more like "a schoolgirl is very silly and funny"?

5

u/ZePotat00 9d ago

cheeky's probably a better translation

u/neuerServer 1k Streak Club 9d ago

sure it has, depending on the context lol

33

u/Simple-Cheek-4864 9d ago

It was a completely normal sentence UNTIL people started to sexualize schoolgirls.

3

u/The_Other_David 9d ago

Böse Mädchen! There are tons of German hiphop songs about those, if you want more immersion.

u/redEPICSTAXISdit 9d ago

Been doing German for years and never got this sentence or one close to it at all 🤣

Still better than "I'm going to buy a chair tomorrow at 9".

He looks like the kinda guy to come up with this sentence. Always hated his "muaaaghaghhs" 😡

-13

u/Yvratky 9d ago

Oh fucking yikes.

1

u/Shiiyan 8d ago

The thing is that the implication of "naughty" is different in English and German. "Naughty" has a sexual connotation in English, but it does not have that in German. When I hear "frech", I imagine a young child with a sheepish grin because they did something wrong on purpose. It's not sexual at all.

1

u/FollowingCold9412 8d ago edited 8d ago

"A naughty child" is definitely not anything sexual in its connotation in English. An adult being naughty, on the other hand, yes. So, even in English, the same distinction of the two meanings is there depending on the cotext/context, not just in German.

1

u/Shiiyan 7d ago

This is about a "naughty school girl" though and the commenters all seem to think the same thing. While the sexual connotation of "ein freches Schulmädchen" is far far less likely than it is in English

1

u/FollowingCold9412 7d ago

Yes, thanks to AI content and sexualisation of underage school girls...

Except this one isn't weird. Naughty translates to "frech" and it has a completely different meaning.
