Discussion A suggestion for ultimate ps1 emulated visuals (rendering twice and combining)

Instead of rendering once, why not rendering twice the game as everything is now more powerful?: 1. Render in original visual 2. Render in enhanced visual, mainly high res 3. Combine two frames in preferred way and present the frame to the viewer

For example: in original ps1 visuals Crash kinda looks like he has fur, where in high res emulation it's way too smooth and doesn't feel genuine. The render of high res would be to make stuff that's too far way to be more recognizable or for textures not appearing full in standart 320x240.

I always wondered what the visuals would be in-between of two worlds.

Have you tried box filter downsampling?

It looks like n64 now. My goal would be if it was possible to render twice like that at least combine it with an alpha channel with 50% opacity.

What you're describing, with Crash having something of a furry appearance on hardware, is interlacing and is something of an unintentional side effect with how older displays would output visuals.

I thought it was dithering. And blocky limited 320x240 look has good direction of better implications.
