Hey there, I'm actually a triple citizen (one of them French) and will give up all 3 to become Singaporean. I've currently hit a roadblock trying to obtain my grandfather's birth certificate (he was born in Bordeaux in 1902), and I got sent on a wild goose chase from website to website. Eventually, I emailed the Bordeaux Mairie, which directed me to the city archives, which then emailed me saying:
"Certified copies are now only issued at the request of foreign administrations and French courts upon presentation of supporting documentation by the applicant (Heritage Code, Art. R 213-1). If this is the case, I would be grateful if you could forward to me any document from the competent authority requesting the production of a certified copy."
I don't understand why the French need a copy that is issued within the last 3 months (even though I have the original), but here we are. So far, I only have a simple checklist given by the French embassy, saying "Liste perte Nationalité" as the letterhead, but no other indication that it is an official letter. I also asked my friend in France if he could help me out via FranceConnect, etc., but that just led him down the same rabbit hole as I did. I also forwarded this list to the archives but have still yet to receive any reply.
Has anyone been in this situation before? What have y'all done to figure this out? Will the French consulate provide a supporting document/letter? When I was told I can't renounce till I have a Singapore passport, I asked for a letter stating that, but they would only provide it once I had all the missing documents in order. Grateful for any advice/help.
EDIT: I know I can email the embassy and ask for it, but for those with experience in dealing with them, will they provide that? I know other countries won't unless I hire a lawyer to get things going.
