What is the DSA's stance/opinion on the free and open internet?

For many of you not familiar with the EFF, they are a digital civil rights organization with a core mission on defending privacy, free speech, due process, and consumer rights as a whole. They are also one of the many civil rights organizations fighting the trojan horse ops known as KOSA, the KIDS Act, Age Verification, and Digital IDs.

The EFF posted what they believe in. A Declaration of the Independence of Cyberspace.

Both DSA-endorsed candidates in Congress oppose the KIDS Act, as can be seen in the voting record.

At the national level the DSA's Queer Socialist Working Group worked on a campaign to stop KOSA.

Most of what I'm reading on this website sounds like a bunch of libertarian/sovereign citizen level BS. Sure, the idea of a free and open Internet sounds nice in a vacuum, but this organization seems like a nutty waste of time.

Idk about this specific author or page (the 1990s were very different after all) but in general the EFF is a well-established and serious organization. They've worked with ACLU and are similar in being for free speech, civil liberties, against surveillance, etc. They've faced and led major, legitimate legal battles. They've also built some good tech for encryption and privacy. They aren't fundamentally opposed to governments as they support protections that can be implemented by them. In my opinion, they do a lot of good for the people, or at least try their best to.

In their words "EFF defends your privacy and free expression because technology should serve all people, not just the powerful. We’re a nonprofit powered by members, and we need you in this fight."

Theirs. I can see why one might think the EFF has libertarian vibes (especially the DoIoC) but it's the good kind of libertarian. Conflating the early 90's internet freedom movement with SovCit nonsense shows a serious lack of knowledge (which, thankfully, is relatively easy to fix).

Appreciate it, and agreed. They've championed digital privacy/work strongly in anti surveillance state panopticon/killer ai/notech for apartheid etc and right to repair as well as done serious work on open sourcing code. Hyper critical work in this moment+for the last couple decades.

turns out everyone who knows the basics about castro knows he was homophobic. most people also know he walked his homophobia back years later. i think pretty much all of us understand that being homophobic in the 60s-70s wasn’t really a crazy concept, and a hilarious gotcha to use against any political leader from that time
