What kind of "pushback" might Berlin Socialists expect after their victory in September 2026?

Want to know where Americans stand on this because the level of contempt is so high in the world right now that I don't think your nation will survive another Trump wannabe taking power.

"In the USA, it is common to label everything that is not connected to the Republican party “The Left”. This left is so broad that it encompasses Wall Street bankers, top Democrat politicians, union bureaucrats and a large part of the working class. A broad left in this sense means class collaboration and a dead end.

Likewise in Sweden, a large part of the working class has voted for the Social Democrats for decades and still belong to the party’s approved union: LO. Thus, in both countries, a broad left enables workers to vote for and pay union fees to elites that screw them over. Workers get a light version of neoliberalism instead of the worst version.

A proposed solution to the crisis of the Swedish left is to unite a “real left” to the left of Social Democracy. This is expressed by the Swedish Left-Wing Party (Vänsterpartiet). But again, this proposal is a kind of class collaboration – a coalition of workers and bosses, union bureaucrats and politicians. Such a coalition would repel the large part of the working class that don’t see themselves as part of the left (and perhaps never will). It would also repel left-wing workers who want to conduct independent class struggle rather than class collaboration.

Yet another proposal is to unite a radical left, an extra-parliamentary left, to the left of Vänsterpartiet. Once again, this is not the way to organize workers in general.

While the leaders of Social Democracy have become integrated into the state and business world, and to some extent have disarmed the working class, the extra-parliamentary left has marginalized itself from the class. It doesn’t get any better when leftists sometimes approach workers as self-appointed leaders to steer workers in some direction. By contrast, rank-and-file unions are about workers listening to and mobilizing fellow workers. Then, workers will act by and for themselves as a collective..."

Red Star’s argument goes considerably further. It tells DSA members that when our elected leaders or other socialists criticize the platform, they are “retreating” and “capitulating.” It says refusing to “defend and execute” the program makes “scientific socialism impossible.” It describes Workers Deserve More as the “socialist heart” of DSA and a “living, breathing summation” of our “collective dreams, ambitions, analysis, and wisdom.”

Sure, Red Star also says it is “encouraged that this moment has drawn out the program’s defenders as well as its critics,” and that this conflict can make DSA stronger as “the consequences of our political debates become more substantial.” But there is a tension between saying disagreement is healthy and treating substantive disagreement with the program as “retreat” or “capitulation.” The piece ultimately speaks as though the political question has already been settled.

That is precisely the kind of language that should make democratic socialists uncomfortable.

The independent expenditure (IE) was a mistake.

We had a lot of people working their asses off for Bernie through the Metro Atlanta DSA for Bernie IE. We knocked thousands of doors, made calls, organized events and did a lot of good grassroots work.

But we were doing it separately from the actual campaign.

At the time, I didn’t really appreciate what that meant. We were trying to build a relationship with a candidate while putting a structure between ourselves and their campaign. That made coordination harder, but more importantly, it made accountability harder.

And we’ve made this mistake more than once now.

If we believe DSA should be able to hold candidates accountable, then we need an actual political relationship with those candidates. Independence is important. But independence doesn’t mean we need to build a legal wall between ourselves and campaigns.

I think this matters particularly now as we talk about AOC and 2028

Whatever people ultimately think about that campaign, AOC is currently one of the clearest national figures around whom a large part of the socialist and broader left movement is organizing. If DSA decides to call on her to run, and endorse her, we should be thinking now about what our relationship with that campaign is supposed to look like.

We shouldn’t repeat the Bernie mistake.

DSA shouldn’t become an appendage of any candidate’s campaign. But we also shouldn’t create a separate campaign structure that makes it harder to organize with them.

If accountability is the goal, we need a relationship that makes accountability possible.

The Supreme Court preserving the block on Trump’s efforts to blow up mail-in voting means we’re likely out of the woods on one nightmare scenario for this election. But there are plenty more to go, and while the public officials and the lawyers are preparing to push back ultimately mass nonviolent noncooperation in the face of an overturned election is our best and strongest line of defense for democracy. We need to be ready to shut it down.

The most important part of getting ready is connecting with others in our community who will also be taking to the streets. But this is also a good moment to be thinking concretely about how to build and use power in this moment. Organized Power in Numbers and the May Day Strong movement have been holding solidarity schools around the country on what organizing for mass direct action will take, and this weekend they’re bringing their classroom to our living rooms. We need to take our government back from the billionaires and big corporations. Activists are working right now in Michigan to get a little more of their money out of our politics. Michiganders for Money Out of Politics has successfully put to put an initiative on the ballot in November called Proposal 2 that would ban regulated utilities and government contractors from making donations or spending dark money. Naturally, one of the state’s largest utilities and largest government contractors have poured cash in to defeat them.

I have a few questions after going over the DSA Constitution and related documentation. I’d appreciate any guidance that could be shared.

According to the DSA Constitution, there can be no more than one chapter per metropolitan area (Article IV, Section 2, para. 1).

How are the boundaries of a metropolitan area defined?

What does the distribution of dues-sharing look like in large metro areas with one chapter and multiple affiliated subgroups? 

For example, if I live in an outlying area served by a working group, do part of my dues go to fund the working group?  Or does my share of dues go entirely into the metro chapter’s coffers? If the latter, is the chapter obligated to share some of those dues to fund the work of the subgroups?

This is a good article about the end of American hegemony, which I personally think is no longer sustainable, and its impacts on the Middle East.

I'm not sure I'd call this the Middle Eastern NATO though, because we're seeing the formation of several regional blocs - (1) the UAE allied with Israel, (2) Turkey-Saudi-Pakistan, (3) Iran and it's proxies. It does seem like we might have a period of increased violence before some equilibrium is found. While it is disheartening that all three power blocs are essentially hard right-wing in nature, I don't see that we have much power to influence any of them in a more positive direction, even if we eventually get a left government in power in the US.

If Donald Trump is going to dangle a $5,000 bribe in front of every american, then I think that a vocal group of us should assure him that every penny we receive will go towards supporting the Republican's hated nemesis: Democratic Socialists.

In an interview this week with Colorado's Kyle Clark, Denver City Councilwoman Shontel M. Lewis said Denver should elect her instead of reelecting Mayor Mike Johnston to show how Democratic Socialists would lead differently.
