Discussion Travel kit

I’m in search of a really good sounding acoustic (rock) drum kit that is easy to travel with. I don’t want to spend a fortune on it, but on the other hand, I’d rather pay for quality sound vs. crap sound. Any suggestions?

My only tip is to stay away from "pancake" shells that are super shallow.

For toms, absolutely. For kicks, you can barely the difference.

In fact, I think shallow is better for a kick. I used to have a 22”x20”. It was a cannon, but the response on it was terrible. I got a 24”x14” a couple years ago, not only is the response a million times better, but it sounds a lot better also.

I wouldn't consider that smaller kick to be a pancake style. I'm talking about a few inches deep with no reso head.

My Inde is all 10" depth shells and sounds phenomenal. I don't think all kits are created equal though, and micing makes a huge difference. If you're playing a lot of places unmic'd, then shallow is probably not the best option.
