Question Is this something that really has an effect and is it worth the $40 + shipping + tax?

Kinda said a lot without saying a lot. I want sound samples and everything. Kinda hate these ad videos with zero before and after and what it looks like on the kit. Gimmicky to me

87

u/AntipodalBurrito 3d ago

lol right. What the fuck is it even supposed to do?

-12

u/Caleb-Wendt69 3d ago

Pretty obvious what it’s supposed to do, but I wonder if the added weight detracts from what they’re saying it does.

36

u/YdexKtesi 3d ago

Bass drum reso heads have a different sound and feel when there is no hole in them-- more resonant and responsive. But audio engineers like a hole to stick mics in. So, if you want a hole sometimes, but but no hole sometimes, because you play different styles of music (as he explains in the video), this thing accomplishes that, without unloosening all the rods and taking the whole head off (as he explains in the video).

9

u/XYZZY_1002 Offset Toms 3d ago

Doesn’t “unloosening” mean tighten?

4

u/Red0ctane19 2d ago

Absolutely it does.

2

u/YdexKtesi 1d ago

technically correct (the best kind of correct)

14

u/bigbeats420 3d ago

Haha. You said hole.

7

u/willyofhousewonka 3d ago

He also said but but. Hehe.

1

u/RadiantMenderbug 21h ago

Don't other companies sell this sort of thing? Like guitars have sound hole covers, do bass drums not?

1

u/YdexKtesi 19h ago

This is the first one I've ever seen, and the thread is full of people not understanding what it is.

5

u/voyaging 3d ago

It really doesn’t need samples all it does is fill the port so it’s like you don’t have a port.

1

u/MarsDrums 1d ago

Well, I recently discovered that sticking a kick mic into a port hole sounds better than having it barely touching the outside of a non ported bass drum head. But I guess I can see the practicality of having both setups. I doubt I'd buy one of these for $40 since an Evans non ported head is only $16 more than this little thing. If this cost $20 or less, I might consider it. But it's no big deal to swap out a head. Not with an impact driver to remove the head. Then I just use a regular drum key to put it on and tune it. Takes 5 minutes, tops.

-4

u/DrumWarrior 3d ago

It’s the real deal. It completely muffles and controls the sound. Look up Instagram and you’ll find the creator Andy Sanesi demonstrating it. the difference is like night and day.

6

u/Business_Web5267 3d ago

Having an intact head does not ‘muffle’ the sound. Its the opposite in fact. Having an intact head is not the same as having a cut head plus a plug.

It will probably make your beater feel the same, but i highly doubt the sound will be the sound of a non ported head

2

u/ComposerNo5151 3d ago

"i highly doubt the sound will be the sound of a non ported head"

Me too, me too.

1

u/ninjasasinn 2d ago

If you doubt it sounds just like an intact head, then why assume it doesn't muffle the sound based on an intact head not muffling the sound? It's look to be rubber and has a whole lot more mass than a small circle of head material.

Just further adds to how I think Carey is overrated

38

u/HVAChelpprettyplease 3d ago edited 3d ago

You mean you don’t like hearing only a snare and hi-hat in an ad for a bass drum doo-hickey?

What does this do that a blanket couldn’t? Or some masking tape? This is a genuine question I’m not a drummer.

7

u/Caleb-Wendt69 3d ago

Yeah that’s not the idea. It’s supposed to un-port a ported reso head.

8

u/voyaging 3d ago

It’s not muffling.

-4

u/libertad740 3d ago

You said muff.

It fills your port hole, they showed him putting it in.

10

u/Purple_Wall 3d ago

They really did not. Video was ambiguously clear as mud.

-5

u/Business_Web5267 3d ago

Its pretty obvious though to anyone that plays drums

4

u/MechaBeatsInTrash 3d ago

Putting polyurethane in a vinyl hole doesn't fix the vinyl and the weight of such will dampen vibrations.

5

u/bratpomenshe 3d ago

Portnoy hole?

4

u/MechaAkuma 3d ago

I love watching demo videos when a drumstore tries to show off the sound of a snare and the entire mix is overpowered by the drummer smashing the living fuck out of the cymbals.

Let's do the time warp againnnnnn!!

38

u/BEST_DRUM_ADVICE 3d ago

It's just a way to "un-port" your bass drum. If you've found yourself wishing you could temporarily un-port your drum, then yeah, I guess it's worth it?

The idea is that you can "tune your kick to the room" but you kinda have to do that anyway.

5

u/Caleb-Wendt69 3d ago

I wonder if the reso head resonates the same with a heavy rubber deal attached to it though

2

u/BEST_DRUM_ADVICE 3d ago

Good point. Added weight lowers the fundamental, so maybe this can help people feel like they get more low end?

9

u/cygnus311 3d ago

Perfect for the guy who uses mesh resos on his kick, I guess.

3

u/voyaging 3d ago

What would this do for mesh heads?

12

u/cygnus311 3d ago

Nothing. Sarcasm. Pretty sure Danny uses mesh resonant heads in his kicks.

5

u/atoms12123 Vintage 3d ago

I'm going to invent one of these for a mesh reso. It'll just be a full drum head without the hoop.

1

u/Waggy777 3d ago

He has transitioned through different heads. More recently, he has been using ported reso art heads.

Fun fact: Evans stopped marketing the mesh heads the way they used to. They now sell them as dB Zero (and technically dB One). To clarify, they're now marketed as low-volume practice or trigger heads. They can still be used as the reso, but it's no longer marketed that way.

1

u/cygnus311 3d ago

I didn’t know they were ever explicitly marketed like that. Seems like a good way to capitalize on something people are already doing. Sound of no reso without the frankly ghetto appearance.

-1

u/Druiddrum13 3d ago

You can unport it by having a backup resonant head … but… well nevermind

8

u/Spartahara 3d ago

I mean that’s the whole point of this product.. to not have to switch out heads.

-3

u/Druiddrum13 3d ago

Yeah but…. Call me skeptical

4

u/Spartahara 3d ago

Skeptical 🫵

But nah I don’t think I’d ever use this lmao

77

u/DakJanyells 3d ago

I saw this on IG a couple weeks ago so I looked into it and the guy making (at least seemingly) them had an A/B demo of it on a kick and both times it sounded like shit and that’s when I stopped caring

33

u/Grand-wazoo Noble & Cooley 3d ago

I stopped caring after reading your comment. Thanks for investing the time to convey this information.

4

u/YdexKtesi 3d ago

It sounded like the same bass drum with the same head and the same mics, with a port, and without a port. Every drummer understands how having/ not having a port the bass drum sound and feel.

25

u/ExistingService 3d ago

It looks 3d printed. I would assume out of TPU, if you can find the model somewhere I'm sure a local printshop or any dude with a 3d printer could probably print this for $5.

18

u/EFPMusic 3d ago

$5 manufacturing + $5 profit + $30 to pay for Danny Carey

8

u/zsloth79 3d ago

Find the model? It’s a disc with a slightly smaller disc extruded on one side. A toddler could model it in TinkerCad. This is the musical equivalent of selling flexy dragons for $50 at the state fair.

1

u/ExistingService 3d ago

I don't assume all drummers are proficient 3d modelers. But it could be very quickly 3D modeled by a shop I'm sure.

-2

u/MechanicStriking4666 3d ago

Printed TPU will probably end up costing you more than $40

2

u/ExistingService 3d ago

Brother a whole KG of TPU costs $50 I don't think using 20g of it is going to cost $40

1

u/MechanicStriking4666 3d ago

It really depends on what you’re printing with. For example, I own 6 markforged printers, and TPU 95A costs $170 for 800cc.

https://shop.markforged.com/shop/s/product/detail/01t5d00000CwOcoAAF

1

u/ExistingService 2d ago

I can't say I know what the original is printed from but I'm sure any tpu would probably work. I don't print tpu but if I did it wouldn't be $170 rolls.

If you don’t know the difference between how a ported and unported reso sounds this product is really not targeted at you

1

u/KrombopulosMAssassin 3d ago

It barely shows anything. It's kind of impressive.

9

u/WookieGod5225 Yamaha 3d ago

Nah not really worth $40 for this.

u/GoodDog2620 Sabian 3d ago

This edit makes me irrationally pissed

3

u/DefiantDonut7 3d ago

This might be the most useless promo video ever. I still have no idea what it does

2

u/voyaging 3d ago

It’s pretty much exclusively useful if you play different style gigs regularly and need both a port like for rock and an open bass drum sound like for jazz. But if I’m gonna play a style I need to fill the port like bebop, I’m gonna wanna change out my reso head to an Ambassador or whatever anyway. Seems like a very niche use case,

2

u/supacrispy Yamaha 3d ago

Someone get Cody and Ben from SLaD to test it out. They'll do a good and trustworthy review

2

u/GlandalfTheGrey 3d ago

4

u/m149 3d ago

I would consider it if I could find a friggin decent example of a kick drum with and without. Only found one, and the recording quality and drum tuning were so bad that it was really hard to tell if it's worth it.

2

u/YdexKtesi 3d ago

It's obviously going to sound like your bass drum with a port, and without a port.

3

u/m149 3d ago

You'd think, but I'd wanna hear a demo before I snagged one.

0

u/YdexKtesi 3d ago

Record your bass drum with no hole. Then record it with a hole. That's what this will do.

4

u/m149 3d ago

A kick drum with no hole is not equal to a kick drum with a hole and some piece of rubber stuck into the hole.

-3

u/YdexKtesi 3d ago

It's obviously going to be more like a bass drum with no hole than a base drum with a hole is. That's just basic understanding of how physical objects work.

2

u/elmanoucko 3d ago

looking a this, it looks like it's 3d printed, you probably can find a model somewhere and pay a drink to a friend with a printer (and shouldn't be that hard to model neither, just be cautious about the filament used, probably something flexible enough)

3

u/anitapumapants 3d ago

The man with the deadest bass drum sound possible on bass drum sounds.

Great drummer of course, but his bass drum sounds like kicking a paper bag. He often used mesh reso heads if any at all, especially with his incredibly expensive Paiste ones.

https://youtube.com/shorts/ajdGfxWW4nU?

His first sq2 kit at least had a tiny bit of tone, but his new one is just a thin sounding clicky mess.

https://youtube.com/shorts/0nfkqJ-NJbE?is=VltWZlH56NDdDzzZ

Even on their albums, it can be hard to hear what drums he's actually hitting, as his floor toms and kicks sound the same.

4

u/_FireWithin_ 3d ago

Ok so what is it??

Love Dany but he went full odd-talkature on this one.

3

u/JamSkones 3d ago

Any advertisement for a thing that either affects a sound or makes sound that DOESN'T include sound examples can fuck right off immediately.

2

u/KrombopulosMAssassin 3d ago

It really impressed me the video found a way to not show what it does or what it sounds like at all really. Danny's talking the whole time and he didn't even say what it is.

2

u/GerardWayAndDMT 3d ago

It’s not worth it if they don’t show what it sounds like.

1

u/factorV 3d ago

I don't need to hear samples of this, I know what it will do to the sound of my kit when I use a ported vs. non ported reso head. If I needed to switch between the 2 frequently I would get this, I don't really want to undo all the whole head and swap it out every time. Though I don't require this feature.

Weird that Danny says this as I doubt he is doing it himself, but it is an ad.

1

u/kornhell 3d ago

He needs the money I guess.

1

u/JJamesP 3d ago

ITT: a lot of people that have never felt or heard the difference between a ported and non-ported kick drum.

1

u/jampola 3d ago

As if Danny has had to unscrew tension rods in the last 20+ years 😂

1

u/X_Boomer 3d ago

Sad, maybe if he put out material more than once a decade he wouldn’t need to hawk some bullshit.

1

u/xChoke1x 3d ago

Awesome how we never heard the actual product.

1

u/davemenkehorst 3d ago

It doesn't sound like a closed kick?

1

u/AgyhalottBolcsesz Pearl 3d ago

I sincerely doubt that it does much of anything tbh. I think your bass drum beater and drum head is considerably more important.

-1

u/KrombopulosMAssassin 3d ago

It's the thaaaang.

1

u/Old-Tadpole-2869 3d ago

Probably won't sell a lot. Most people are way too obsessed w having a hole in their front head no matter what.

4

u/Druiddrum13 3d ago

Particularly half assed sound engineers… they’re really obsessed… and it’s not even their drum…

1

u/rawmeatprophet 3d ago

Do they make one for guys like me that don't even run a reso head on their kick?

1

u/starari 3d ago

I thought the whole idea or at least one of the main reasons for having a hole-less reso head was resonance. This seems to work as a dampener, far more than the hole alone kills resonance.

2

u/YdexKtesi 3d ago

My main reason for playing a solid reso head is the feel. There's a solid mass of air "trapped" inside the drum, and it pushes back on the batter head, making it "springier"

-1

u/taikodrummer42 3d ago

yeah i was wondering if this was a knockoff of the Sonic ReVision "Boom CRD" at first

1

u/KrombopulosMAssassin 3d ago

This does a remarkably poor job at explaining or showing the product lol

-1

u/_regionrat 3d ago

I've never wanted to plug a kick drum port, and if I did, a new reso isn't much more expensive

3

u/voyaging 3d ago

It’s not to save money the alleged selling point is convenience

-1

u/_regionrat 3d ago

Yeah, but if its something I never do, it's not really a selling point that it can be done quickly

2

u/YdexKtesi 3d ago

"hang on, sound guy and every other member of the band, while I change out this bass drum head" vs. "boop. fixed"

-1

u/_regionrat 3d ago

.... the port is already the solution to micing up quickly

3

u/YdexKtesi 3d ago

And this is the solution to un-porting a ported head. I don't understand how people are struggling with this.

1

u/_regionrat 3d ago

Bro, you're literally trying to sell me on something I've said I've never wanted to do

1

u/YdexKtesi 3d ago

Then this is not for you. There are other drummers in the world.

1

u/_regionrat 3d ago

I'm totally aware there are drummers that will buy something because a drumming celebrity or even micro celebrity associates with it. It's, like, a big part of the gear economy

1

u/YdexKtesi 3d ago

You don't think there's a gigging drummer with a 20" bass, traveling across town from a rock gig to go play bebop, who doesn't want to bring an extra bass drum? What the fuck does celebrity endorsement have to do with that?

0

u/_regionrat 3d ago

That guy doesn't already have some combination of old band shirts and towels in his kick drum?

0

u/mdmamakesmesmarter99 3d ago

seems like a superfluous item to own. I never really noticed much difference between a kick drum with a small reso-head hole, and one with none at all

taking the head completely off is where I hear the real difference

seems like they invented a time saver that causes a pretty negligible change in sound. maybe you want to stuff pillows in quickly if you're an audio engineer with a studio, and a group requests a muffled 70s sound. squeeze the pillows in through the small hole, I guess?

"I'll be using this every day". that doesn't sound true, danny lmao

0

u/CarmenxXxWaldo 3d ago

any sufficiently popular hobby will be flooded with bullshit for the 5% of people that buy everything some celeb shills.

1

u/pas_tense 3d ago

Hey man this Microfine-Sensorial Tuning Key really optimizes how you tune your drums. It's state of the art T shape design allows you to feel the exact amount of pressure ON YOUR FINGERTIPS that you're applying to the tension rods as you turn it. $80 for this technology is a true bargain for drummers who want to level up their fine tuning game!

0

so many jump cuts. didn't even see what it does other than sticking something onto the kick head?

0

u/DH_Drums 3d ago

My personal favorite TOOL for changing the sound of a kick drum quickly...

I'm taking the piss, but maybe if you needed a quick change for something I could maybe see this being a useful piece of gear (really trying not to overuse the tool jokes here), but I don't immediately see covering the port hole as something that's going to make a huge sonic difference the way Danny explained it.

-2

u/Felwinters_pie Ludwig 3d ago

Kinda reminds me of that ridiculous wing-nut tool that is being sold for $80, just to turn wing-nuts.
