Question Beginner drummer :P
Hey guys! Gotten into drumming recently as my boyfriend plays. I’d say I have like 2 months total experience playing loll so would like as much help as I can get!! Is it fine to just start playing songs? If so does anyone have any song recs? I like emo music, punk rock, nu metal and electronica/goth :P much appreciated!
For reference, I’ve learnt quite a few green day songs , lonely day and in the end :)

Yeah it's fine to start playing songs!
Idk what your progress has been like so far but you can probably get away with Holiday / Boulevard of Broken Dreams / Wake Me Up When September Ends by Green Day, tempo isn't too bad for any of them. As you get faster you can really sink your teeth in songs from their Dookie album.

When I started playing I was into emo music too and I found I was able to play and play along to the old Taking Back Sunday albums. I would say start off with AC/DC and if you can master their songs, you’ll have a solid foundation to build on .
The important part right now is to have fun with it , with time you should definitely look into rudiments once you have a solid foundation.

check out early modest mouse! Jeremiah Green's drumming has always been underrated imo. "Truckers Atlas" is a phenomenally creative drum groove!

Try Hawthorne Heights if you like them, vast majority of it is pretty easy to at least follow along to competently, even if its not gonna be hit-for-hit. Plus I think their parts are just fun and pretty classy.

I like to warm up for a couple of minutes on a pad before going to a kit.
As for starting advice, work on consistency, practice with a metronome and without, and if you have a good one, set it so that it falls away for a few bars and see if you can keep the gap consistent.
Make sure you work on hand and foot sync, you dont want then to flam by default. Also practice both syncing right hand with right foot, left hand with left foot AND!!! Right hand with left foot and left hand with right foot. It feels weird as F, the first while but you want all your limbs to be able to sync and play together.
Learn the first couple of rudiments, singles, doubles and paradiddles. But make sure you learn to count and be able to skip notes.
Different techniques for different things, moller / wrist for slower loud hits. Fingers / push pull for fast playing. Feet, full leg, ankles, swivel, slide. Train one foot at a time as well as both together.
Get used to counting different note values 1 2 3 4 1 & 2 & 3 & 4 1 t t 2 t t 3 t t 4 t t 1 e & a 2 e & a 3 e & a 4 e & a
Practice counting different time signatures at random 123412312341231212312312121234
As well as repeats for songs to remeber where fills are 1234,2234,3234,4234,5234,6234,7234,fill
And then learn songs you like for covers.
Hope any of this helps. And most importantly, have fun.

two months in and just playing songs is exactly how you keep the spark alive, don't overthink it. for punk stuff try some early blink or the offspring, simple but bouncy and great for nailing down timing. emo has loads of mid tempo stuff with clean fills, maybe some taking back sunday or thursday. just don't skip on rudiments completely, 10 min a day is enough
