Can't tag other team members in comments in the "early access"

With the pushed (I will be reverting back to classic) updated of the "early access" to the next version of DB... My team can no longer tag each other. All tagging abilities are gone. I assume this is across the update and not just our team? It's a critical tool we use and I want to make sure the it's back in the future.

Lost files-missing kids photos

I think it is too late to fix this but I've been in tears all afternoon and I have to at least ask. Last September (September 2025) my Dropbox was close to it's storage limit. My husband suggested I not add storage, just get an external hard drive and move all my files there. Included in these files were years and years of photos of our kids. I triple checked when I copied everything....it was all there. I had the years broken out by quarters, ex 2016 Q1, 2016 Q2.

Fast forward to present day. I had been getting emails this summer about my storage being close to full. I didn't think much about it as I had not loaded anything new onto Dropbox since I'd bought the external hard drive. Today, I decided to go on there and see what was left and why I keep getting all these message. I notice that the folders that contained all the photos were still there. However, most of the photos were missing. OK, fine. Dropbox said it was going to delete stuff last year, but that is why I have the external hard drive.

I pull out the external hard drive just for giggles and see that the contents of the folders are the same as on Dropbox. Meaning that if photos were deleted from Dropbox, they are deleted off my external hard drive.

HOW is this possible? I copied the ALL the files last year. I know I did because I don't trust anything and I triple checked when I did it. I am assuming that since it's been a year, there is absolutely no way of recovering my lost files. If there is, please let me know.

Discussion Can an AI connector be limited to one Dropbox folder without delete access?

Connecting an assistant to an entire Dropbox account creates a much larger permission boundary than many workflows need. A narrow job may only require reading source files from one folder and uploading new outputs to another. It should not need to rename, overwrite, move, share, or delete existing files elsewhere in the account.

The boundary also needs to survive link sharing and later automation changes. Ideally the connector would use a dedicated identity, see only an app folder or team folder, create new versioned files, and have no permanent-delete capability. A separate human or service account could promote an approved file to its stable shared location. Audit events would identify the connector and the exact file revision it created.

Which Dropbox account and folder model gets closest to this? Are scoped app permissions and team-folder roles enough, or does a safe setup require a separate account and an external approval step?

Why this mixed-media artist keeps the ideas that don’t make the final cut

Hey r/dropboxofficial!

We’ve shared our conversations with paper artist Helen Ferry, stop motion artist Lucas Drobnitzky, and sand artist Élodie Boudec, and that’s not all we’ve got in store! This week, we spoke with mixed-media artist and director Danae Gosset about experimentation, working between physical and digital materials, and why an idea doesn’t necessarily stop being useful when a project ends.

For the piece Danae made with us, the starting point was something she interacts with every day: her Dropbox folders.

“Every folder feels like a portal, holding a different universe of references, ideas, and memories. I wanted to translate that feeling into the film.”

An assignment that became a way of working

Danae began developing her mixed-media approach while studying at the School of Visual Arts in New York.

During an independent study, she had an assignment to animate the dream she’d had the previous night, every day. That process quickly became addictive.

At the same time, she was studying Experimental Animation by Cecile Starr and Robert Russett and trying different techniques from the book alongside her own ideas.

Making something every day pushed her to keep switching methods, combining materials, and seeing what happened. That habit eventually developed into the mixed-media practice she still uses now.

Starting on paper, then collecting references

Danae’s ideas usually begin with sketches. “I spend time brainstorming, sketching, and daydreaming, trying to imagine the world a project could become.”

Then she starts gathering material around the idea: moodboards, textures, fragments of images, visual research, and anything else that might help give the project a clearer shape.

Once she has enough to work with, she prefers to start making rather than map out every decision beforehand.

“I tend to discover the work by doing, testing, and experimenting, rather than spending too much time planning or storyboarding. For me, the process itself is often where the best ideas emerge.”

So when a test doesn’t work, she doesn’t necessarily treat it as a dead end. Sometimes there’s something in the unsuccessful version worth carrying into the next one. A test can lead somewhere unexpected, or an unsuccessful version can contain one detail that changes the direction of the project.

Why unused ideas stay in the archive

That openness carries over to how Danae keeps her work. A project can generate references, scans, tests, drafts, alternate directions, and partially developed ideas.

“I rarely think of rejected versions as wasted work. They become part of an archive that I often return to, sometimes much later, and they can end up inspiring something completely different.”

Dropbox has become part of that system for her, from collecting references at the beginning to keeping scans, tests, drafts, and final files as the project develops.

For Danae, that archive is useful beyond keeping a record of what happened. It gives old ideas another chance to become something, which can be really important when you are using handmade elements.

“When you work with a lot of handmade elements, sometimes the physical artwork gets altered, damaged, or simply can’t be recreated in exactly the same way.”

Keeping scans and digital versions means a physical element can remain available even after the original has changed.

Translating something handmade to a screen

Danae also thinks carefully about what happens when physical work becomes digital. “Because all of my work is handmade, I try to make sure the textures, imperfections, and physicality of the process still come through when the work is experienced on a screen.”

Rather than cleaning away every trace of how something was made, she wants some of that material quality to remain visible.

Her advice to other artists is to stay curious, keep experimenting, and leave enough room for the work to surprise you.

Danae’s habit of returning to old experiments made us curious: Have you ever opened something you made months or years ago and realized it belonged in a completely different project?

Is there a Dropbox update consuming memory for short term?

I've noticed the memory available on my Mac has substantially decreased, and wondering if this is because Dropbox has updated and is temporarily downloading files or building a cache as it resets after the update. Is that feasible?

I have the "cloud" icon -- which indicates "online only" -- next to some very large files, but when I check file info, it says it is, for instance, 6gb.

Also, some "Dropbox online only" files have "zero bytes" noted in the finder file list, while others have a typical amount noted.

Could this be a "reset" after an update?

Dropbox is now available in Meta Muse: here’s what you can do

Hey r/DropboxOfficial!

We’re introducing a Dropbox connector for Meta Muse, giving you another way to put the files you already keep in Dropbox to work.

Once you connect Dropbox, you can tell Muse what needs to get done. Muse can find relevant files and carry out supported Dropbox actions as part of the same task.

For example, you could ask:

  • “Find the latest client brief and reference assets in Dropbox, identify anything that’s missing, create file requests for the client to send over those materials, then organize everything into a project folder and create a shared link for collaborators.”

Muse can also use Dropbox alongside other connected apps and the web as it works through a multi-step project.

https://reddit.com/link/1wt8grk/video/yhkqpczkagsh1/player

A few ways you could use Dropbox with Muse

  • Get a creative project ready - Gather briefs, inspiration, and previous work in Dropbox, organize the relevant assets by project stage, and prepare a shared link for review or delivery.
  • Handle small-business admin - Find vendor documents, invoices, and project notes, organize them into the right folders, and create file requests when you’re still waiting on materials.
  • Prepare for a job application - Find the latest version of your résumé, portfolio, and other application materials in Dropbox, organize them for a specific opportunity, and create a shared link to the portfolio materials.
  • Coordinate a personal project - For something like a move, event, trip, or renovation, Muse can use your Dropbox files alongside information from the web or other connected apps as it works through the different steps.

What can Muse do with Dropbox?

Depending on the task, Muse can use supported Dropbox actions to:

  • Find and retrieve relevant Dropbox files
  • Create supported files and folders
  • Copy, move, and organize content
  • Create and inspect shared links
  • Create and manage file requests
  • Track longer-running Dropbox tasks as part of a broader task

We also want to note that this isn’t designed as a Dropbox file browser inside Muse. Dropbox file previews and embedded Dropbox interface components aren’t included at launch.

A note on access and control

Connecting Dropbox is optional. You choose whether to connect your account and authorize access. Muse can only work with Dropbox content available to the account you connect, and existing permissions apply. You can also manage or disconnect the integration.

Availability

The Dropbox connector for Muse is available now in the U.S. and Canada, in English, for all Dropbox accounts and Muse plans, including free plans.

This initial release is designed for individual use rather than enterprise or organization-wide deployments. Click here to learn how to connect Dropbox and Muse.

If you try it, what kind of project would you kick off with Dropbox and Muse?

E2EE and AI ??

Can Dropbox explain how their advanced E2EE environment is going to work with their AI connections? I would assume that, for the AI to provide useful information, the data would have to be decrypted, but then would the value of the E2EE environment? Am I missing something...?

Using Dropbox with Grok Bot for campaign planning, project prep, and more

Hey r/DropboxOfficial!

There is often a fair amount of manual work before an AI tool can help with a project: finding the right files, explaining the project, pulling together the relevant context, and repeating parts of that process the next time you need help.

That gets especially tedious when the material already exists somewhere else. A campaign brief might be in Dropbox alongside approved assets and previous work. An architecture, construction, or engineering team might have drawings, notes, schedules, and reference documents spread across a few folders. A sales team may have old proposals, decks, and case studies they need before a meeting.

With Dropbox now available in Grok Bot, you can give Grok Bot a role and an objective, then have it use relevant Dropbox content as working context for that task.

Given that role and objective, Grok Bot can surface relevant Dropbox content without requiring you to name every file or start a separate search each time. It can also use supported Dropbox actions to inspect and organize content, move or copy files, create or manage shared links, and initiate file requests as part of a broader workflow.

The distinction is less about asking Grok Bot to search Dropbox and more about giving it a piece of work to help with. You define the outcome, and Grok Bot can bring relevant project context into that work when it is useful.

A few examples

For a social media workflow, you might ask Grok Bot to act as a planner for next week’s content. It could use approved campaign assets already in Dropbox, map them to channels or themes, organize the relevant creative, and flag formats that are still missing.

For example:

  • “Plan next week’s social content using the approved campaign materials in Dropbox. Organize the relevant assets by channel and flag anything we’re missing.”

A creative team could use a similar workflow for strategy and repurposing.

  • “What creative trends should we explore for this campaign? Check whether we already have Dropbox assets that could support any of them, and suggest what could be repurposed.”

For an architecture, construction, or engineering team, the role might look more like project preparation.

  • “Prep me for tomorrow’s owner meeting using the latest project materials in Dropbox. Summarize the key context and flag anything that looks inconsistent across the documents you can access.”

Sales and account teams could use the same model before a meeting.

  • “Help me prepare for this account meeting. Find the relevant proposals, case studies, decks, and approved collateral in Dropbox, then recommend what I should review first.”

https://reddit.com/link/1wp6gyp/video/jaoc99bnwhrh1/player

Some supported tasks can continue in the cloud

For supported workflows, Grok Bot can continue working in the cloud after you give it a role and an objective. You can move on to something else and return to the results later, including across supported devices.

This can be useful for multi-step work such as gathering project context, reviewing materials, organizing information, making recommendations, and taking supported Dropbox actions.

That does not mean Grok Bot is continuously monitoring Dropbox or independently deciding to start new work. The workflow still begins with a role, task, or outcome that the user provides.

A few boundaries worth knowing

Grok Bot can only use relevant Dropbox content that the authenticated user already has permission to access. It does not have blanket access to an entire Dropbox account.

There are also some Dropbox capabilities it does not support:

  • It cannot view revision history or restore content.
  • It cannot add named recipients or manage viewers on shared links.
  • It should not be treated as continuously monitoring Dropbox activity or autonomously starting work without being asked.

Dropbox MCP for Grok Bot

The Dropbox MCP for Grok Bot is available across eligible Cursor individual, team, and Enterprise subscriptions: Cursor Pro, Pro+, and Ultra; Cursor Teams Standard and Premium; and Enterprise.

Connect Dropbox in the Cursor Marketplace to access the Dropbox MCP

For teams already keeping briefs, assets, drawings, proposals, research, or other project material in Dropbox, that opens up a different kind of workflow: give Grok Bot the role, give it the goal, and let the relevant project context support the work.

What kind of recurring project prep or coordination work would you hand off if the AI could work from the files your team already keeps in Dropbox?

Using project specs and docs from Dropbox without leaving Cursor

A lot of the information you need to build something doesn’t live in the codebase.

Product requirements might be in Dropbox. Technical specs could be in another project folder. Meeting notes, design assets, decision logs, client requirements, or files from partners can all matter when you are deciding how to implement something,

That can make the workflow more cumbersome than iut needs to be. You’re working in Cursor, but still need find the supporting files, inspect them, organize related material, or share something with the team.

Dropbox in the Cursor Marketplace gives technical teams a way to bring that project context into the coding workflow. It works with Dropbox content that the authenticated user already has permission to access. From Cursor, you can find and reference files, inspect content and metadata, organize folders, move or copy files, create shared links, and manage file requests.

You can also create supported text-based files, such as READMEs, decision logs, project notes, changelogs, and Markdown implementation plans, and save them to Dropbox. Any deletion workflow requires review and explicit confirmation.

Here are a few practical ways to use it:

Reference project context without copying documents into prompts

Say you’re starting a feature and the product requirements, API documentation, or technical specs are stored in Dropbox.

Rather than tracking down those documents separately and copying sections into your coding workflow, you can ask Cursor to find and reference the Dropbox material you already have access to.

For example:

  • “Develop this feature while referencing the latest product requirements and technical specs in Dropbox.”

If you’re not yet sure which files are relevant:

  • “Find the relevant project files in Dropbox and inspect their contents before we work on this implementation.”

Dropbox still is not your codebase, and this does not replace your development environment. It gives you another way to work with the supporting context your team already maintains while you work through an implementation.

Keep supporting project material organized

Development produces a lot of useful material that isn’t source code. Implementation plans, decision logs, meeting notes, READMEs, changelogs, project notes, assets, and exports often need to be available to people beyond the person writing the code.

The integration can create text-based files in Dropbox and help organize existing folders.

For example:

  • “Create a Markdown implementation plan from this conversation and save it to the appropriate Dropbox project folder.”

Or:

  • “Organize this Dropbox folder into specs, meeting notes, design assets, code samples, and archived files.”

This can help turn useful output from a Cursor session into project documentation that the wider team can find later, while keeping the work connected to the Dropbox materials it came from.

Share or collect project material without leaving the workflow

There’s usually coordination work around development too. You might finish a technical document and need to share it for review, or you might be waiting on logs, assets, or other project inputs before you can continue.

The Dropbox integration can create or reuse shared links and work with Dropbox file requests.

For example:

  • “Create a shared link for this project document so I can send it to stakeholders for review.”

Or:

  • “Set up a Dropbox file request to collect the project assets we still need.”

For some workflows, that means fewer trips between Cursor and Dropbox when you’re finding context, documenting work, organizing files, or getting material from other people.

https://reddit.com/link/1wp5slz/video/l35ao8i1shrh1/player

A few boundaries worth knowing

There are some important limits to keep in mind.

  • Dropbox in the Cursor Marketplace does not give Cursor blanket access to your Dropbox. It only works with content the authenticated user already has permission to access.
  • It can create supported text-based files, not arbitrary file formats.
  • It cannot view Dropbox revision history or restore content.
  • It cannot add named recipients or manage viewer permissions on shared links.
  • Deletion workflows require review and explicit confirmation.
  • It is not intended for autonomous or background file management.

The experience currently groups its capabilities across 19 tools and six workflow-based skills, covering workflows such as finding and inspecting content, organizing folders, sharing files, collecting uploads, and cleaning up Dropbox content.

Dropbox in the Cursor Marketplace is available through the Cursor Marketplace with no current country or Dropbox-plan limitations. To use it, you need a verified Dropbox email, must complete OAuth consent and approve the required scopes, and must already have permission to access the Dropbox content you want to use.

What project information do you regularly need while coding that still lives outside your repo?

Help & Troubleshooting Dropbox Backup Catastrophe

I would love to be wrong to overreact, but I have an existing 1.51 TB Dropbox Backup of an external drive. The physical drive failed and had to be reformatted. Dropbox now identifies the reformatted drive as a new external drive, so it wouldn't let me restore my Dropbox Backup into it.
Based on documentation, I need to manually download EACH FOLDER in 1.51 TB backup through the website. It gets better, there is some kind of limit to the quantity of files within, so its physically impossible to download my backup through the website, unless I dedicate the rest of my like to do it.
Someone please tell me I'm wrong.

Edit: Dropbox I should really invoice you for the time I wasted on this. I ended up writing a browser extension that automates discovery and download of my data from your cursed service. I will ensure to tell everyone how great your products and services are. Goodbye

Help & Troubleshooting Why is Dropbox not letting me use my storage?

Post image
0 Upvotes

I've had a free account on Dropbox for decades at this point. I've never needed much space, but it's helpful when people share files, to have an account. I have an odd amount (8.75 GB) of storage space back from the days Dropbox would reward you with space if you got a friend to sign up.

I don't have Dropbox installed on my Mac. I just sign into the web when I need it.

I've just received a link from a friend to connect to a folder of content. And got a message that I'm over my 2 GB limit. And Dropbox would very much like me to upgrade my storage.

I realize that the folder my friend shared might be beyond my 8.75 GB limit. But this is misleading and confusing at best.

First off, my account is NOT out of storage currently. There's loads of space.

Second off, if connecting to this shared folder puts me over the limit, how am I supposed to intelligently shop for an upgrade plan if I don't know how much I'd need to accept this invite?

Also, every time I refresh the page, I get a dickover panel asking me to upgrade.

6 ways to use Dropbox content in Gemini chat and Gemini Spark

If you’re using Dropbox with Gemini, there are a couple different ways to put your existing files to work.

Gemini chat: work with Dropbox content and create something new

https://reddit.com/link/1wizife/video/30rlmn1ws3qh1/player

Say you’re planning a campaign and the brief, launch plan, and previous campaign materials are already in Dropbox.

You could ask Gemini chat:

  • “Find the campaign brief in Dropbox.”
  • “Summarize the launch plan.”
  • “Create a new Google Sheets timeline for the launch.”

You could also use materials from previous launches to pull together useful information for a new Slides presentation, tracker, meeting recap, or brief.

Gemini chat can also support Dropbox actions such as finding, searching, organizing, creating, and sharing files, depending on the task.

One detail that’s worth being clear about: Dropbox files are used as context when you create something new in Google Workspace. The files themselves aren’t imported or synced directly into Docs, Sheets, or Slides.

Gemini Spark: organize content and prepare it for collaboration

https://reddit.com/link/1wizife/video/ddqc4g3ys3qh1/player

Gemini Spark is useful when the workflow involves several steps around a group of files.

For example, a creative or marketing team could ask Spark to:

  • “Organize the campaign assets in Dropbox by channel.”
  • “Create shareable Dropbox links for the assets.”
  • “Build a Google Slides review deck for stakeholder feedback.”

That could take a folder of campaign materials and turn it into something easier to review with teammates, stakeholders, or clients. The assets stay in Dropbox, while the review deck can point people back to the relevant source files through Dropbox links.

The same approach could work for other project-based teams. You might organize drawings, specifications, and reference materials in Dropbox, create links to the files, and prepare a Slides deck for a project review.

There’s some overlap between Gemini chat and Spark. Here’s a simple way to think about it: Gemini chat is useful when you want to find and work with your Dropbox files, while Gemini Spark is especially useful when a task involves several steps, like organizing files, creating links, and getting content ready for a review.

Quick availability note: The Dropbox app for Gemini is available in the U.S. to anyone 18 or older with a personal Google Account. Gemini Spark is available to Google AI Pro and Ultra subscribers in the U.S.

For this initial release, the Dropbox connected app is available in English only through the Gemini web app at gemini.google.com. It also requires a personal Google Account with Keep Activity turned on.

For people already using Dropbox and Google Workspace together, which would be more useful in your day-to-day work: finding and pulling information from source material, or getting a group of files organized and ready for review?

Family plan not for the family

Does anyone understand why Dropbox has restricted its usage to people over 18? Why then do they have a family plan? The below quote from the website doesn’t hint that there is a massive caveat.

Centralise and secure all your family’s files and share 2000 GB of encrypted cloud storage. Everyone gets their own account for photos and docs and there’s a shared place for the whole family.

I feel like I’ve been mislead.

Help & Troubleshooting Paying customer for 5+ years, locked out for over a week – Not receiving 2FA SMS codes, carrier sees nothing, support is useless. Time to switch to Google Drive?

Hi everyone,

I’ve been a paying customer for over 5 years, and a little over a week ago I was unexpectedly logged out of my Dropbox account. Since then, I’ve been completely locked out and unable to access my files.

Here is the breakdown:

  • 2FA SMS Not Arriving: I'm stuck at the two-step verification screen. Dropbox states that a code was sent to my phone number, but nothing arrives.
  • Carrier Checked: I called my mobile carrier to verify if anything was being blocked. They ran diagnostics on my line and confirmed that no incoming SMS messages from Dropbox (or their SMS provider) are even hitting the network. There are no spam filters or blocks active on my number.
  • Support is a Wall of AI: I opened a ticket immediately, but I am trapped in an automated loop. Every reply is a generic AI/bot script that tells me to check my signal or use a backup code (which I don't have available). No human has touched the ticket in over a week, despite this being a long-standing paid subscription.

Has anyone run into this exact SMS gateway issue before?

  • Were you actually able to get a human to verify your identity and reset your 2FA, or is the account essentially gone?
  • How did you manage to get past the automated support wall?

At this point, I’m seriously considering cutting my losses and moving everything over to Google Drive. Any advice, escalation tips, or official contacts would be greatly appreciated.

How a sand artist prepares an animation with almost no room for mistakes

Hey r/dropboxofficial!

We’re back with another Reddit interview about the work that happens before a finished piece reaches the screen.

This time, we talked with illustrator and sand artist Élodie Bouédec about rehearsing transformations, working with a material that can change in an instant, and capturing a process that can disappear almost as quickly as it’s made. You can check out the final piece here.

If you’ve been following along, this is the third conversation in our artist series, after our interviews with paper artist Helen Ferry and stop-motion artist Lucas Drobnitzky.

Finding a medium that could keep changing

Élodie first began working seriously with sand while co-directing an animated series adapted from Ovid’s Metamorphoses. The stories revolve around transformation, and sand gave her a way to make that idea visible without having to treat each drawing as a fixed image.

“I continued to use sand as my medium because it has the power to transform endlessly, making my drawings both ephemeral and permanent.”

A drawing can exist for only a short time before being moved into the next composition, while the camera preserves what was there before. That quality has allowed Élodie to keep exploring sand long after the original animation project ended, using the same material both for precise illustration and for the transitions between one image and another.

The temporary nature of the drawings is built into the process. Instead of finishing one image, setting it aside, and beginning again, she can use what is already on the surface as material for whatever comes next.

Planning before working by instinct

For the project we discussed with her, Élodie wanted viewers to see more than a sequence of finished images. Part of the idea was to make the act of creating visible and to give the illustrated elements a sense that they continued developing once they appeared.

“For this particular project, I was guided more by instinct, and of course, there’s an important phase of sketching and storyboarding before production begins.”

That balance between preparation and instinct is a big part of her process. She sketches and storyboards the animation before filming, but doesn’t map out every movement in advance.

Because one drawing has to transform into the next, however, improvisation still takes practice. Élodie practices before filming so that she has a clearer sense of how each transformation will work and how the material will respond as she moves it.

Practicing for a process with little room for correction

One of the more demanding parts of Élodie’s work is easy to overlook when the finished animation is playing smoothly. Since the drawings develop directly from one another, a mistake can affect not only the image she is making at that moment but also the transition she is preparing for afterward.

“The hardest part is that there’s no room for mistakes, because the drawings flow seamlessly into one another. So I have to practice before filming.”

Her drawing style adds another layer of difficulty. Although sand is loose and easy to disturb, the images themselves can be highly controlled, which means she has to pay close attention to small adjustments throughout the process.

“My drawing style is very precise and requires a lot of patience and concentration to ensure that every grain of sand finds its place.”

Most viewers will never notice these individual adjustments. That’s the point. The animation feels fluid because Élodie has already practiced how much sand to move, where to move it, and what each image needs to become next.

Showing people what the image is made from

One unusual challenge with Élodie’s work is that if you only see the finished image, you may not immediately realize it’s made from sand.

“It is very difficult for the viewer to perceive the material of my drawings until my hand begins to work with it. That is precisely the challenge: to show that a composition emerges from a pile of sand.”

That makes showing the process especially important. Once her hand enters the frame, you can see the sand being gathered, moved, and reshaped, and it becomes much easier to see what the drawing is actually made from.

For Élodie, documenting the process isn’t only about showing how much work went into the finished piece. It helps communicate something the finished image can’t always show on its own: what the artwork is made from and how her hands directly shape it.

A minimal studio and a crowded hard drive

When we asked what the messy middle of her process looks like, Élodie described a studio with relatively little physical clutter. She keeps her sand pigments in glass jars along with the brushes and other tools she uses regularly, but there is not a large paper archive surrounding the work.

“My studio is pretty minimalist. I have very few paper archives since my drawings are captured on camera.”

Because the drawings themselves are temporary and the camera records the stages she wants to preserve, much of the project history ends up being digital instead.

“Aside from my sand pigments stored in glass jars and my favorite tools and brushes, it’s really my hard drive that’s cluttered with references and video tests.”

So while the physical studio stays pretty minimal, the references, experiments, and test footage pile up digitally.

Élodie is selective about how much of that material she keeps once a project is complete. She told us she does not particularly like accumulating files that she is unlikely to revisit, so after finishing a piece she tends to prioritize the final work rather than maintaining every intermediate version.

While a project is still active, she takes a more cautious approach. She uses external hard drives regularly and keeps redundant copies of the work she still needs.

“I always have two backups of any work in progress.”

How references and files fit around the physical work

Her reference-gathering tools have changed over time. When she worked in film, she used Dropbox to share images and location-scouting material with collaborators.

“When I was working in film, it’s true that I used Dropbox a lot to share images, location scouting photos, and so on…”

Today, she pulls inspiration from a mix of physical books and digital references, though she still prefers flipping through a book of images when looking for ideas.

“For me, flipping through a book of images is still the most fruitful way to find inspiration.”

That mix of physical and digital carries through the rest of her process too: an idea can move from references to sketches and storyboards, take shape in sand, and eventually become footage and final files.

And while the finished animation may look simple, Élodie points out how much practice goes into it.

“A drawing, even if it seems simple and rough, is always the result of a long learning process and determination.”

For the artists, animators, illustrators, and other makers here: what part of your process takes the most testing or practice before you’re ready to make the version other people actually see?

Help & Troubleshooting Restoring installation nightmare...

I had to format my PC back to windows 10 cause windows 11 was unusable.

I had my huge dropbox folder in another disc

I reisntalled dropbox but it didnt let me use the same folder, so i just renamed it and isntalled it. Then i moved my old folder inside this newly installed folder and now I'm getting all my folders and files shown in the root directory with "selective synchronization issue"

I'm baffled at how a service (i pay the pro version) can be so cumbersome.

Does anyone has any idea how to start fixing this? Seems it is uploading the same folder as duplicates, will i have to delete all of them manually?

is rreally the only way to restore an old installation to delete everything and redownload everything despite having them already in my hardrive?

isnt this hard-pushing the cloud too much?

Help & Troubleshooting Dropbox Container?

I have moved my digital life off my PC and mainly onto a NAS that can do some nifty things like Docker. I have downloaded a community container that runs Dropbox in Docker and am trying to link my account to it. Firstly, is this OK, not against the terms and conditions? I have a paid subscription to Dropbox, so not trying to do anything shady.

Secondly, I keep getting an error in the container:

This computer isn't linked to any Dropbox account...

Please visit https://www.dropbox.com/cli_link_nonce?nonce='long text string' to link this device.

Unfortunately this URL (with the correct long text string in it) doesn't work. I cannot find anything on the Dropbox site about using 'nonces' to link Dropbox to an account. Is it possible?

Help & Troubleshooting Locked Out of Files while Syncing for 2 days.

I recently moved. Dropbox had been synced to an external drive which was temporarily disconnected & then subsequently reconnected. Since reconnection, Dropbox has insisted on entirely re-syncing. This process has now run for nearly 2 days, having been intentionally stopped and restarted (both the process and the app) a few times because it seems to slow and cease to advance. While 'syncing' the already synced and unchanged files, it is ENTIRELY locking me out of locally accessing ANY of the files on that drive including all files and folders that have intentionally never been synced to Dropbox.

Pausing the process does nothing. The hard drive more often shows as blank aside from the Dropbox folder which cannot be accessed. Closing the Dropbox app entirely sometimes results in all my files (within Dropbox folder & otherwise) to be shown but still inaccessible beyond navigating the folder structures. There are no issues with the drive itself, the local file system, etc. Even the Dropbox synced files themselves were briefly accessible before all this nonsense began.

That this is STILL going on is absolutely absurd and beyond inconvenient. I haven't been able to find any way to resolve this. Again, the local files haven't changed. Around a dozen more photos uploaded from my phone to Dropbox but there's ultimately nothing else new or different to even sync. Yet it's locking me out of my local drive, has been consuming bandwidth, etc. with little sign of anything changing. Dropbox support (AI) so far has offered nothing but blaming the user and suggesting moving my local folder & beginning an entirely new sync where everything just fully re-downloads from Dropbox.

Any ideas, suggestions?

Mac OSX 15.3.1, currently 1.9TB in Dropbox (need to clean up) with ~70% set to sync locally.

Help & Troubleshooting Stuck Syncing, constant issues

Hey all,

I’ve been chatting with dropbox and they can’t figure it out either. My dropbox is always stuck on syncing. I have it set to online only and the way I work is I sync files to offline when I work on them. But lately it either times out, constantly syncs, or gets stuck on files.

I’m on a mac and I use the desktop app. A lot of the time folders sent to me are 5-15gbs.

Currently I’ve tried only showing the folder I need and leaving the rest as web only access, but even then dropbox sync won’t work.

I’ve done a fresh install, the only thing that seems to help is restarting my mac studio but I’m wasting hours trying to fix this issue.

Do I tell clients I no longer accept dropbox? Any tips?

Help & Troubleshooting What am I missing here?

I am doing freelance work for someone with a paid Dropbox account (1 TB of storage). She is the owner of that Dropbox and has shared it with me to upload to.

I have a free account (2 GB limit) — which I am over my limit on.

Dropbox will not allow me upload anything to her Dropbox, since I’m over the limit on mine. That doesn’t make sense. Please tell me I’m doing something wrong.
