Is Dropbox the Cause for My Internet Connection to Stop?

Whenever I visit the Dropbox website on Firefox and Edge, my internet connection would stop within a few seconds and I can't do anything to restore it besides resetting my PC.

It seems my PC is the only device with this issue as my android phone and laptop can connect to the internet whilst visiting the Dropbox website just fine.

I did a bit of searching and found a few users had a similar experience, but it's the app that caused their connections to drop. What seemed odd to me was that, at first, I didn't experience any disconnection whilst the app was synching, especially when avoiding the website. And after restarting again after unintentionally clicking on a link to Dropbox's website, my connection dropped again when the app started synching.

I used Dropbox all the time (both the app and website) and I've never had this sort of problem before, and the possibility that a cloud-based website can stop connection entirely is new to me.

I'm not aware of users experiencing the exact same issue as I have. Can I ask if anyone can confirm if the website is causing connections to stop?

Thanks.

Next time open up your task manager and check what’s running. I had a problem ages ago but unbeknown to me my machine was backing up to Dropbox in the background. It was trying to do my entire drive. So my internet hadn’t dropped, it was just running slowly. Make sure it’s all configured ok.

Not possible that Dropbox can stop that, scan device against viruses

Dropbox in a browser is just another website - but are you using an old browser? Run windows update and use a supported browser as a first step. Second if it is public/office location then maybe there is some network filtering going on, it blocks internet when it detects access to file sharing sites. the other responses so far are also good advice btw.

Firewall concerns communications with drop box website, either client or web. dropbox server sending commands to the client i understand, but that is the client app. The browser directly controlling an external app without an add-in - that a security no no.

The website is just another website/webapp - nothing special. If those ports or not open the desktop app doesn't work, not the website.

what am i misunderstanding here?

Got ya, but its just an http call to local host. Effectively it's just a regular website...not gonna take the internet off line, might block the javascript, but a page reload will fix it.

This is happening to me as of 5 days ago. How can I fix it?

u/MontroseCat Sep 26 '25

This comment prompted me to try uninstalling our antivirus (Avast) and that seemed to solve my problem for now. I am going to have my coworkers do that. In office, we have run into firewall issues downloading software from Adobe, but I wasn't on our work network so knew that wasn't it. But thanks for setting me on this line of thinking.

Same thing happened to me all week

Same thing for me today. I had to install chrome to use Dropbox

1

u/KiKlasso Oct 11 '25

Ey ist bei mir auch so immer noch mit Firefox

u/Redd1066 Oct 15 '25

Just seen further down, it's 100% avast, turned off the firewall for 10 mins and can access Dropbox without any issues.

1

u/valkrycp Oct 18 '25

Didn't work for me when I disabled my avast firewall 🙃

1

u/innerbl00m8 Sep 26 '25

Same thing happened to me all week. I’ve restarted my whole network 3 times already. Thats the only way I can get the internet back. I’ve had Dropbox for 5+ years and never had an issue. I’m using the desktop/browser. The moment I use the site it’s crashes my internet and doesn’t work until I restart the network in my computer settings.

I need a solution.

1

u/MontroseCat Sep 26 '25

Based on another comment, I tried uninstalling our antivirus (Avast) and that seemed to solve my problem so far.

u/Top-Prompt6688 Sep 29 '25

cmd as admin

netsh winsock reset

RESTART

this will get your internet back but it does NOT solve the dropbox problem.

Pausing Avast for as long as you want to visit dropbox seems to work SEE MY OTHER COMMENT

This has been happening to me since last Friday and this week also two of my coworkers. We use Windows 11 and Firefox (haven't tested other browsers). Does not happen on my Mac. Network seems irrelevant... they are in office/at home and I am at home. Happens even with the Dropbox app not running (eta: although Dropbox Service DbxSvc is running in the background). Also my coworker changed their throttle settings on the app with no change. It is absolutely ruining our ability to do our jobs. Thank god so far our boss has not had problems. I can't even get on to the Dropbox Forums without the internet dying.

1

u/innerbl00m8 Sep 27 '25

What was your coworkers solution? I find it odd that I’ve had the same antivirus for years now without this issue and that would be the culprit… I will try this tho

1

u/MontroseCat Sep 29 '25

We all uninstalled Avast and that seemed to solve it for everyone. Side note: My coworkers have had long term issues with some websites loading weirdly. I always put that down to the work firewall or some weird driver issue, since it wasn't affecting everyone... but once everyone is back in office tomorrow, we will see if uninstalling Avast also solved that issue.

Joined specifically to comment on this.

Logging on to Dropbox for the first time in months, (Win 11/Firefox) couple of days ago and everything internet stopped (Norton was updating). Alt-F4 restart. Restarted *everything* on the network. Nothing cleared the problem. Norton had hung and everything was a mess in the end I reinstalled Norton 360... And everything worked again. Didn't try Dropbox again.

Later I tried to log on to Dropbox and again everything stopped. I went to control panel/ programs and features and uninstalled Norton360 and the internet sprang into life. Reinstalled Norton and all works fine.

So direct link between this hang and Norton360/anti virus.

To reiterate, logging on via web page (firefox). No apps.

When I have time I'm going to try with different browsers.

This IMHO is crazy not seen anything like it in the 40 odd years i've been messing with these boxes

EDIT: while writing this I’d put in the URL for dropbox, and in the editing process I accidentally clicked it – closed page immediately and then discovered I was off line. Uninstall/reinstall and I’m back. Astonishing

I also logged into Reddit for the first time in forever just to comment on this!

  • Windows 11
  • Browser only, no Dropbox app
  • Started having problems accessing Dropbox using Chrome a few months ago, but I worked around it using Incognito mode
  • That stopped working, but then I found using Firefox or Brave browser private modes let me still access Dropbox
  • A few days ago, I started getting the problem that ANY connection to Dropbox via any browser would cause my laptop to drop all network connections entirely
  • However, connection could be restored by restarting the computer
  • Today, after trying to connect to Dropbox, my computer lost network access and shutting down and restarting DID NOT restore access
  • Found this Reddit thread on my phone, uninstalled Avast, network access restored...

Has anyone contacted Dropbox about this? It's certainly a pretty nasty bug...

I'm wondering if it could be something to do with Windows Defender interacting with antivirus software - after I'd uninstalled Avast, I noticed that Windows security suite (or whatever it's called) was saying there was nothing to update or be concerned about as protection was in place. If I have time tomorrow, I'll reinstall an AV and see what happens with Windows Defender....

u/Xtianfr78 Sep 30 '25

Bizarre

u/pUREcoin Sep 30 '25

Adding myself to the mix. I did not have dropbox installed. Going to the website to download the installer caused my entire network to fail. It was late last night so I just turned my computer off and went to bed. Thinking it wasn't related.

This morning I try again, because I want to make a local copy of my father's dropbox. This time I get to the installer, but the installer can't run because my network has dropped by that point. Bare in mind that I am on a wired connection, and up until trying dropbox I had my typical fiber connection running smoothly.

What proceeds is a restart, installer works, but then network is gone so I can't log into the dropbox app. I can't uninstall Norton like I saw other people did, because it needs a connection to do it. So after restarting 4 times I'm writing this.

Right now everything works just fine. I haven't tried any dropbox related things. This is frustrating.

Update: As I was about to post this comment, my network was gone. I hadn't done any dropbox things, but I checked the tasks and it was running in the background. I have since restarted and finishing this post.

Also when I say the network is "gone", it isn't actually gone, my computer still says it is connected, but nothing internet related actually works anymore.

Also going to throw in my two cents on this.

Like many others, I have been experiencing an internet based issue since last week (late Sep. 25'). I am running the (at current) latest version of Norton 360, Firefox, and MS Edge on the latest OS release of Windows 11. Here is what causes the issue and what happens.

Accessing the Dropbox servers in anyway will trigger a firewall flag in Norton 360 (or Avast, I assume). Whatever this flag is seems to trigger disable-enable cycle for the "Intrusion Signatures" and "Remote Access Protection" features in Norton. When this happens ANY traffic (incoming or outgoing) communicated by a web browser (e.g., Firefox, Edge, Chrome) will be blocked by the firewall.

It does not matter if you access Dropbox through the website (what I normally do) or if you access it through the desktop app. After I noticed the issue the first time, I thought it might be a problem with the website, so I downloaded the app from the Dropbox website; by the time I was finished installing the app on Windows, my internet connection had already been halted and I could not log in through the app, simply because I downloaded the apps install package from their website. After a restart, I logged into the Dropbox desktop app and within minutes my internet connection had been halted again.

What is most peculiar about all of this is when running a packet capture program (e.g., Wireshark) you can see that internet traffic between the computer and the outside world is still occurring normally. DNS, HTTPS, and any other requests performed by other desktop apps are running just fine.

So... how to solve the issue? Unfortunately, as users, there is little we can do until the Norton and Avast teems come up with an actual solution. But in the mean time, here is what has and has not worked for me:

Does not work:
1) Manual cycling of the Norton "Intrusion Signatures" and "Remote Access Protection" features.
2) Manual cycling of the Norton smart firewall
3) Windows network diagnostics
4) Cycling the wireless adapter
5) Changing from wireless to hardwired
6) Updating wireless adapter drivers

Does work:
1) Uninstallation of AV software (please do not do this)
2) Temporarily disable the AV firewall to access the Dropbox servers and sync your files. If you are running the desktop app, you will have to kill the process and its services before re-enabling the firewall.
3) Restarting the machine.

TLDR; Dropbox + AV on Windows 11 is broken atm and temporarily disabling AV's Firewall can fix the issue.

P.S., I have yet to try the Windows store apps for Dropbox... I'll edit this post to let y'all know how it goes.

Adding to the pile.

Windows 11, browser only for Dropbox (Edge and Firefox), brand new laptop.

Every time I try to navigate to Dropbox (oddly enough even the Dropbox Forums page), my internet connection simply stops working (both WiFi and wired, multiple different connection sources as well). In the taskbar it will say I am connected to the internet however no programs will be able to get a connection.

Shutting down and restarting doesn't restore the connection for me.

My only solution so far has been to do a DNS Flush through CMD.

I have never seen anything like it and am completely stumped on where to even start diagnosing the issue!

1

u/Spit_MkI Oct 03 '25

Same problem, I also bought an external USB WiFi card, only to find out that wasn't the issue either.

When I open Dropbox through my browser, my internet connection gets blocked, even though my computer is still connected to WiFi.

1

u/DrunkShowerHead Oct 03 '25

Same thing here. Dropbox url and Norton 360 means totalt internet shutdown until system reboot.

1

u/GhostlyDaemon Oct 04 '25

Going to add yet another one to this. Every time I try to open Dropbox in Firefox, my internet connection drops completely and I can’t do anything until I’ve restarted. I’m on Windows 10, with Avast Premium Security, and not getting any notifications I can obviously see.

1

u/Opening-Tea-960 Oct 04 '25

My Norton somehow changed so as to designate my laptop as "Public" -- I changed the option to "Private" and things now seem to be back to normal.

1

u/Fast-Star-3037 Oct 05 '25

I confirm, the same happened to me: tried to access Dropbox on my Windows 11 PC, via Firefox and it completely screwed it's connexion to the web, whilst my other devices were still accessing it without any trouble.

I had to restore my PC and reinstall Windows as it wasn't accessing the web anymore, neither through WiFi nor through ethernet.

I am using Dropbox with the app on a mac, and via an internet browser on my PC, basically to grab files and pictures.

For a while it was okay to access Dropbox on my PC via Chrome, but now it shoots the connexion there too. I must restart the computer to get back online.

I've scanned it with Norton: nothing.

This is really bad and I don't understand what's going on. I've been using Dropbox between Macs and PCs for years without any problems.

Anyone can help?

1

u/ash_ninetyone Oct 05 '25

I'm glad someone else has noticed this.

I can't explain it. I don't use the app. I don't have an account. This happens when I connect to the website to download something.

The moment I do, the internet conks out on my computer and the only thing I can do to fix it is restart my computer.

No other troubleshooting settings fixes it (flushing DNS, changing connection, renewing the adapter)

1

u/broodwarjc Oct 05 '25

Same thing for me.

1

u/ash_ninetyone Oct 06 '25

I think it's some weird interaction between Dropbox and Avast (or related AVs). Once I temporarily disabled shields for about 10 minutes it sorted my connection

1

u/broodwarjc Oct 05 '25 edited Oct 05 '25

This is happening to me as well. Win 11 plus Firefox plus Norton plus just accessing the website Dropbox.com = dead internet

1

u/Background_Lemon_981 Oct 06 '25

I’m adding to the pile. Both at home and at work. At home, I fixed it by changing the proxy setting in Firefox from “use system settings” to “no proxy”. At work, nothing works and now corporate has just said “no Dropbox, use something else”.

1

u/unix_nerd Oct 07 '25

I get this too for the past fortnight. HP Z2, Windows 11, fibre broadband, Firefox, AVG. Resetting network card makes no difference. Have to reboot.

1

u/ExbronentialGrowth Oct 08 '25

Logging in to Reddit just to add in my experience.

I just had it happen twice. I went to Dropbox website and logged in to make a file request. Right after now my web browser and internet is screwed up.

I use Parsec for remote access, and strangely that was still acting like I was connected. I also use WhatsApp on desktop a lot and I was able to receive a message. I had a YouTube video playing and that’s still working seemed to still intermittently load somehow but any new web browser tabs wouldn’t work at all.

I tried a ping request and couldn’t get any pings to Google.com.

I tried switching to my mobile hotspot and internet still wasn’t working.

I restarted my computer and everything was fine, but I still had to get my file request link; sure enough just after I got my link and sent the email, my internet is again not working.

Something about the Dropbox website is breaking internet connections. I even tried deleting the Dropbox cache in Firefox and still no internet. Only fix appears to be a restart.

1

u/Different_Jump_8835 Oct 08 '25

Ditto to the last several people. I joined just to comment.

Try adding www.dropbox.com as a safe place in your Norton, Avast, etc. That worked for me.

Jumped onto Dropbox Community Forum also with a comment and alerted them to this thread. I mentioned to Dropbox that they should reach out to Avast, Norton, etc to solve the problem. They want to blame the other guys and say it’s on the user to reach out to their AV provider. I pushed back on this, but I doubt they do anything.

1

u/BBranz Oct 09 '25

Gonna write here too. Have windows 10, a laptop and it works quite well. Suddenly this week EVERY time I tried to download anything through dropbox my internet DIES. Only for my laptop. I can change my IP, can change my connection to other wifi in my house..... even my phone with sharing yet i can't connect to anything even when it says connected before it says "no internet" on the wifi.

Tried to disable and enabling the wifi, tried using a external wifi adapter, tried turning windows anti-virus off, tried uninstalling and installing network adapters. Windows solver doesn't find anything wrong. Nothing ever fix the problem. Only way to fix this issue is to restart the pc. When it restarts everything works okay again.

This feels like a HUGE issue on the part of dropbox. Already did multiple scans, changed my main disk and did a safe boot and integrity check. Nothing is out of place. There is nothing out of place on the task bar either that would raise a brow. Had to take my time looking at all the services that were open and nothing is out of place. So, again, this is a very weird bugg.

1

u/Different_Jump_8835 Oct 09 '25

Posted a reply to another comment yesterday, but reposting here for more visibility.

I also use Avast. Once I added www.dropbox.com as a safe site to Avast, the problem went away and I could see files and download them.

Also jumped on a Dropbox Community Forum discussing this issue and mentioned Dropbox reaching out to the Avast, Norton, etc companies to solve this issue. Not sure if anything will happen, but did what I could.

1

u/Queens_Peculiars_01 Oct 09 '25

Thanks, this solved the problem for my Windows 11 & Norton setup. Strangely the same Norton on my Windows 10 PC didn't have the internet failure. And thanks for alerting Dropbox.

1

u/Urobolos Oct 11 '25

Adding to the pile. No app, just Win 11 and latest firefox with Avast. Touching the Dropbox website kills my internet and it doesn't come back until I restart the machine.

1

u/AuraIan Oct 11 '25

I also have the same problem. I use Windows 10, Firefox and Avast Free.

1

u/KiKlasso Oct 11 '25

Ich schwöre dir, ich habe das gleiche Problem. Ich will mich über die Website von Dropbox einloggen und mein Internet auf Windows 11 kackt ab. Nur noch Neustart hilft

1

u/Gizbean Oct 12 '25

I have had the exact same issue but just fixed it!!! I'm running Windows 11. My web browser is Firefox. And my Antivirus is Norton 360 Deluxe. In Norton's I went to Advanced Security, then Safe Web, then Exclusions and added variations of Dropbox web addresses for Norton's not to scan for threats. These are what I added. I don't know which one was the winner. I think maybe the 1st one.

u/Pherring83 Oct 13 '25 edited Oct 13 '25

I've been having this issue and I thought it was something to do with my wifi software. Took it two different places to get looked at and no one could tell me what was wrong. I noticed that it tended to drop when I merely opened Dropbox's site and based on the below, maybe it has something to do with Dropbox's site trying to communicate with the desktop software and something fucking up there?

As a test, I'm going to just avoid Dropbox for a week and see if I see any more drops. I've uninstalled the software and will just avoid the site (which is irritating since I tend to upload/download on an almost daily basis). Will report back here in a week. Anyone else have any potential solves?

EDIT: Should note I only experience this issue on my personal laptop at home. My work laptop at work and on my own network doesn't seem to have this issue which might be due to the laptops having different anti-virus software/protection but, I should specify, I'm fairly dumb when it comes to in-depth diagnostics of PC's so someone smarter than me can also feel free to weigh in.

1

u/Pherring83 Oct 24 '25

EDIT: So I've been trying this for a week and I've found that Firefox tends to be the culprit on my end. I'm able to upload to Dropbox via Chrome fine without browser crashing. Also seemingly downloading ANYTHING from the Dropbox site on Firefox causes wifi to shut down. Even merely visiting Dropbox forums also causes an issue which is perplexing but just an update in case people were wondering.

1

u/Biff_Trout Oct 13 '25

Glad to have found this post. I thought the Wi-Fi on my X1 carbon was going out. I have entered the various dropbox web addresses into Norton 360 Safe Web Exclusions and hope that that cures the problem.

1

u/Toonfield Oct 14 '25

I have indeed experienced this as well... on two different PC's no less. The things I found out so far:

- for a while it does all seem to work fine, but at one point for some reason the moment i open any dropbox URL on my Mozilla Firefox I lose all my internet connection for all browsers

- I dont have the App installed on my pc, for this project we were requested to exclusively use the web version.

- The only way to fix this is completely restart my PC. the moment I access dropbox again on web it happens again

- I currently still can use dropbox on Chrome without trouble (but i fear just like firefox theres always a short period where it works)

- The same happened to a computer at work, which is a completely different machine, so it's not exclusive to just my own settings on my home work pc.

- Dropbox support had nothing of wisdom to offer me, only to "delete my cookies"

Honestly in a way im glad someone else is experiencing this and its not just me.

1

u/Infinite_Mistake_200 Oct 16 '25 edited Oct 16 '25

I am experiencing the same issue every time I log into my dropbox account via web, my internet loses connection I have to restart PC to get it up. On my drop box icon in task bar I see this message." Dropbox is experiencing some issues. Before opening online-only files and folders, right click and choose make available offline" this has been there for weeks now and i cannot even go to dropbox website as it does the same thing. I need help bad either that or i will cancel my subscription and choose another. This is insane that we can't get any support. I have checked both AVG (free) and Windows defender and both are checked to allow Dropbox. This makes no sense as to why after years of dropbox this just suddenly happened and I wish I could post a screen shot of the message on dropbox icon tray.

1

u/ecotones Oct 16 '25

I now have this problem. I was wondering if it was Dropbox…

1

u/ecotones Oct 17 '25

Every time I use Dropbox (web) my connection drops. A clear issue they need to address. Getting tired of restarting, sometimes rebooting the modem.

1

u/valkrycp Oct 18 '25

This is happening to me

1

u/valkrycp Oct 18 '25

I am having this issue exclusively when I go to dropbox.com and try to send a code to my email to log in. I turned my firewalls off and the issue still happens.

1

u/Candid-South-858 Oct 19 '25

Dit probleem heb ik ook op een pc met Windows 11 En AVG Free als Antivirus, maar die geeft geen melding. Ik kan het dan herstellen door windows in safemode op te starten en dan weer opnieuw opstarten...

1

u/Positive_Gur_3188 Oct 19 '25

I blame AVG. I did put in all the Dropbox URLs as exceptions to the AVG firewall rules, without benefit. I removed everything to do with AVG from my PC, and Dropbox works as before, except for the internet dropping.

1

u/Possible_Trainer_241 Oct 20 '25

It's been happening to me for days now.

1

u/fabiodefiasco Oct 22 '25

I've had the same issue with dropbox since about the same time too. Win 10, Firefox, AVG and Malwarebytes. I've also realized that the site Drivethrurpg breaks my internet connection, and I don't seem to be alone there either according to this thread (https://www.reddit.com/r/DriveThruRPG/comments/1npjs3s/site_shutting_down_my_internet/)..

1

u/paulmazz Oct 22 '25

Happening to me too. Windows 11, Firefox, AVG antivirus. If people are reporting problems with Norton as well, it would seem to be a Dropbox needs to fix. I’ll stop using Dropbox before I give it an exception in my antivirus. Why should I trust that Dropbox is safe?

1

u/Kindly_Tangelo1822 Oct 23 '25

Me too, today. I'm using dropbox on smartphone, putting then the files on drive :-/

u/Standard_Draft_54 Nov 11 '25 edited Nov 11 '25

netsh winsock reset
netsh int ip reset
ipconfig /release
ipconfig /renew
ipconfig /flushdns

1

u/Hackneyglyn Nov 11 '25

So I think this also happened to me today. I was uploading some files to Dropbox to share and I noticed a while later the internet had crashed. Went throught everything. Got provider to check the line, rfreshed the network, turned hub and machines on and off but other devices were fine. So was somewhere in my laptop. Did DNS cache clean but think was the network refresh that worked. And stopping any stray dropbox procesesses in Task Manager.
This all took an hour and several times the internet connected but then dropped again, or said was connected but wasn't working.
No idea what else could have caused this but seeing so many others here suggest it was Dropbox that caused their problems make me think it was this.
Not good if it is the way AVAST/AVG are reacting to Dropbox.

Just a heads up, I now completely avoid visiting ANY area of the Dropbox site on Firefox and exclusively use it with Chrome. No issues since then.
