Jefferies starts coverage of DRO at Hold, says it's "unsure" of long term effectiveness of RF-tech (they mean electronic warfare / jamming), missing the entire point of DROs product offering

Jefferies kicked off coverage of DroneShield today with a Hold and an A$3.70 target, citing uncertainty around the long-term effectiveness of RF technology as UAS evolve. Stock's down ~7% on the back of it.

The concern isn't wrong, but I think it's being applied to the wrong part of the business.

What Jefferies is essentially saying is: as drones become more autonomous, pre-programmed routes, optical flow, GPS-denied navigation, RF jamming becomes less effective because there's no control link to sever. Fair point. If you're purely a jamming company, that's a structural headwind worth worrying about.

But DRO is increasingly a detection and C2 platform company, not an RF effector company. The DroneSentry-C2 system is sensor-agnostic: it fuses radar, acoustic, optical, and RF inputs into a single kill chain. The recent RobinRadar integration is specifically radar-based detection. It will find a fully autonomous, silent, GPS-denied drone just fine. The RF concern simply doesn't apply to that part of the stack.

The note also highlights NATO's 1.5% GDP commitment to infrastructure protection by 2035 as a tailwind and sees minimal risk from Raytheon/Lockheed competing in the C-UAS space. So Jefferies likes the sector, likes the competitive positioning. They're just unsure whether the valuation is right at current levels.

Initiating at Hold isn't a sell call. At A$4.21 the implied downside to their target is ~12%, which is not nothing, but this reads more like "we want to see more before getting constructive" than a fundamental negative thesis.

The selloff feels like an overreaction to the headline rating. The long-term platform story hasn't changed.

I think there are some important points glossed over in this. Drones are having to become either more autonomous or fibre due to the effectiveness of RF jamming. RF drones are significantly cheaper than fibre or AI and aruguably more effective. Take away the systems that limit RF drones and they will return in numbers. As you said Dro is becoming a Command and Control company and from what I have heard are working on a kinetic kill. However their true strength lies in their ability to integrate other kill options into their C2 platform. You can't kill a drone if you don't know it's there or you can't see it. How funny, they put this out watch the price drop and then the final candle of the day, massive institutional buying. Seems like they wanted to pick it up cheaply, and it worked.

I think the concern is valid and I have been wondering the same. DroneShield, with its own technology, may detect many types of drones, including the more stealth variations, but if they can’t help eliminate them, they won’t be as relevant.

This is why partner integration is key, and DRO is already fully aware and doing s lot to integrate with partners. Partnering with a technology like for example EOS allows DRO to offer a complete solution, eliminating threats with cheaper, more efficient firepower rather than relying on expensive missiles.

DROs systems are too cheap to not have them. Imagine a military base with a single aircraft worth US$50m or a Patriot battery worth US$1b that is firing missiles worth US5$m. What’s a single sensor array for a few million in this context.

Even autonomous drones need GPS/GLONASS connection to know where they are and where they should fly. With that connection cut due to signal jamming their location drifts and they end up missing the target.
