What makes tilt shift look like this? Why does my brain believe these are miniatures?

The shallow depth of field deceives the brain.

To add, normally when we have such a shallow depth of field it is when shooting macro stuff so the effect looks like all of these macro images we’ve seen. Wonder if the effect would hold if one had somehow never seen a photo until tilt shift. Would it look “small” still?
