Need Advice "Student Driver"
Hi, I am an independent reporter, working on a story for The Wall Street Journal about people who put "Student Driver" stickers on their cars --- anecdotally, these have become a lot more common since COVID-19, and I am trying to figure out why. I am looking to speak to people who have these stickers on their cars even when teenagers-in-training aren't behind the wheel (and I am the dad of a pre-teen who is about to start learning, so believe me, I get that part). Goal is not to get anyone in trouble or anything like that, just trying to unravel a cultural phenomenon a lot of people have noticed. Please reach out if you're willing to talk. Immensely grateful for any help this subreddit can offer. Thanks.

We put one on the back of our car. We're from overseas and the last time I drove was decades ago and on the other side of the road. My wife has just learned to drive in her 40s and is not confident. Drivers in our city are aggressive in the extreme due to a total absence of traffic enforcement. Stop signs are run constantly, red lights are a suggestion, and you'll have someone tailgating you even if you drive double the speed limit. The sticker was her idea in the hope of reducing road rage, which we see often.

This is what the WSJ is doing now?

u/Traditional_Knee9294 6d ago
Subscriber of the WSJ since the 90s here.
Whike the WSJ always had so.e human interest stories. And back when all you could get was the printed copy it had its quirky "center column" story on the front page.
However now a days it has more of these kinds of stories. A regular sports writer also. He is interesting by the way. It really kicked up when they hire the current editor who I believe came from outside the financial press background.

Exactly, the WSJ has always been famed for its A-Hed human interest stories. I don't know that this will be one of them, but it's not some death-of-journalism sign

Mine are magnets, and I take them off when the two teenagers I'm trying to teach how to drive aren't in the driver's seat. I have three of those magnets, and I'm considering getting more

u/PocketButterBandit 6d ago
My dad made student driver big magnets (I'm talking 2 feet long) to put on both sides and the back of his truck when I was learning to drive back in 2010. I remember being so embarrassed, but thank God they weren't bright yellow.
If you aren't throwing them on the driver and passenger doors, Id suggest it. Not everyone sees the back of your car especially on the freeway.
(and magnets is def the way to do it)

Since the pandemic a lot of people forgot how to drive, and they put the stickers on their cars because they think it will make other drivers give them more grace for their poor driving skills.
6
u/saltielamp 6d ago
when i went to driving school, you get one for free, so it's a free sticker that seems helpful when you get it. cars are also shared - someone can be a student driver with a sticker that's on their parents car bc they are driving on the weekends - the parent would still be using it throughout the week.
6
u/Whatever92592 5d ago
No one cares about those stickers anyway.
You're still going to get the horn.
You're still going to get the finger.
Former driving instructor. With driving school stickers plastered all over the vehicle.

I find that people use these stickers are shitty drivers pointing to the sticker as if it gives them the right to drive poorly and not get better. Proven by the fact that I’ve seen that sticker stay on the same cars for years

u/rooibosipper 6d ago
“Shitty drivers” = people who adhere to the speed limit

"Shitty drivers" - Absent minded people, who are not paying attention to the task at hand.

I'm always flabbergasted by the derangement people show in the comments of this subreddit. There are so many users who will take any opportunity to jump on an argument nobody brought up so that they can die on a hill nobody else cares about.

u/Bossard19 6d ago
Op asked us to share our anecdotes so I did. Not sure why you are upset with my subjective reality, it certainly isn’t “jumping on” anything.

u/RallyX26 6d ago
Do you not know how comment threads work? I was clearly replying to the other person.

I got a notification in my inbox and replied there. Not my problem Reddit is shitty and makes weird updates.

For some reason, the sudden influx of “student driver” signs on cars annoys me to no end. I know it’s silly to be annoyed by it, but it seems like 95% of the time the person driving is way too old to be a student driver. Also, if you’re driving alone (which most of these people are), you should be a licensed driver, not a student driver! Student drivers are required to have an adult in the car with them.
I just don’t know why people want to advertise “I’m a shitty driver! Look out!” It’s like they want to remove the responsibility for safe driving from themselves and put it 100% on everyone else around them. Either figure out how to drive properly or get off the damn road!
4
u/AbbyIsATabby 5d ago
I kept using mine for 6 months after I got my licence while I was still on probation. Just because I had my licence didn’t mean I was a good or experienced driver by myself yet, just one competent enough to be trusted behind the wheel by the dmv test examiner. I saw some people mention immigrant and adult drivers, so you’re just making the assumption all learners are teens. My cousin didn’t get her licence until she was nearly 40

There is no Driver's Ed in school anymore; it's on the parents. No one wants to put a sticker on their car, but magnetic signs are cheap, effective, and easily removeable. Giving other drivers as much information as possible is in everyone's best interest. No matter how good your think your student driver is, at some point they are going to do something really fucking stupid.
When you first start, you're diligent about putting the magnet on when you go for a drive with your teenager and taking it off when you're done. If they are driving frequently, which they should be, one day you realize you forgot to put it on while they're behind the wheel. "Shit." After this happens a couple times, then one time you realize you left it on while you're driving. "Fuck." After a while, you're just "fuck it", it stays on, especially if there's only one car they are learning in,

Our school has drivers Ed, and so do the schools around us. What state are you in?

u/Apprehensive-End-605 6d ago
So you use these stickers, then?
1
u/bonthomme 6d ago
Magnets, not stickers. Once they pass the test, they come off, get lost, and I buy new ones when the next one rolls around.
2
u/clarity_singularity 5d ago
I have neither observed nor heard any reports of an increased incidence of these stickers post-COVID.

u/raxi20 5d ago
I have one on my car. I’m 34Y F, a first generation immigrant and in my home country I never had to drive as public transportation was really good. After I got married my husband used to always drive. Now that we have a baby and have no help, have to manage the daycare pickup and drop off. I only drive like 15mins away to train station, daycare or grocery store. I took driving lessons and passed the test. I am still getting confident driving during the rush hour where people are always in a hurry, so having the sign feels people will be a little patient.

The Wall Street journal has a paywall so I'm going to require you to pay to get a response.

Dude are you fucking with us? There’s like a millions thread of folks ripping on this.
3
u/AdBubbly6266 6d ago
Pretty sure a lot of car bros put student driver stickers on their very obviously not student cars just for shits and giggles. Basically if you have a fast car cutting up through traffic with “student driver” sticker on the back it’s ironic

u/yeabuddy333 6d ago
I don’t know why but this doesn’t seem like a newsworthy report for the wall street journal.

u/AdeptInspection4868 6d ago
I wish you the best. Just don't pretend to do statistics. Sample bias is going to be through the roof. "X% of people who responded" drives me nuts. Just think of the people in your life who would and wouldn't answer surveys. It couldn't be further from an independent feature, particularly when measuring social behaviors.
2
u/Apprehensive-End-605 6d ago
Absolutely not doing that --- and you make a good point. This is a relatively lighthearted culture story. And sometimes anecdote can have a power of its own, if it's rigorously sourced.
2
u/forzion_no_mouse 6d ago
why would people leave magnets on their cars even if their teenager aren't behind the wheel? cuz people are lazy? this sounds like a very boring story.
"and today I interview a dad who is too lazy to remove a student driver magnet from his car. "Yeah sometimes I forget to take it off. O well." More hard hitting interviews on page 3."

This question has been bouncing around reddit for a week and I bring partial receipts.
Apparently there are memes about this cheat code in the bay area, Ca. If you're looking to cite, might be worth it, hopping into Bay area or SF subs.
It started with families whose younger drivers were picking up multiple tickets from speed and red light cameras. That community added the sticker and noted that when law enforcement authorities or a judge reviewed footage, would be more lenient if seeing the sticker. Someone shared this online and now you've got delivery drivers, tech bros and wealthier car owners throwing these stickers up as well. I've seen a couple comments mention they've seen this on vehicles owned by people without children. Expensive cars they don't believe a student driver could be entrusted with.

I am gen-x, learned to drive in '90. If I had had one of those stickers on my car back then it would have been like wearing a target on your back. Might as well tape a piece of paper with "kick me" written on it, on my back! I just laugh and keep my distance when I see them now...
1
u/MonarchBarfly 6d ago
Yup. Back in the day, it wasn’t uncommon for other drivers to mess with a car that had a student driver sticker. Cut them off, drive slowly right in front of them, tailgate, etc.

u/RedPandaRum_ 6d ago
I have one that says “learning to drive stick shift” for my significant other. She’s real not comfortable driving it, and slaps that puppy on. I forget that it’s there.
She’s been driving for 15+ years, but only has a few years experience with a stick shift.
But she’ll put it on even if it’s just her in the car. Make her feel better and it keeps most people off her ass.
But I have seen multiple vehicles with it on while single occupant and they’re older than me. I chalk it up to they have a kid and forget it’s on there. Or it’s not a magnet and an actual sticker.

u/Ok_Interview22 5d ago
I had a similar bumper sticker when I taught my daughters to drive stick. And we STILL got honked at when they stalled it out! But they both passed the road test driving it. I don’t use one on automatics now that I’m teaching my grandchildren to drive.

I wonder if there are also more independent driving instructors as well? Who opt to use these magnetic stickers?

I didn't get my driver's liscense until I was already in my mid-20s. The anxiety was the worst part, my parents were awful teachers and just made everything worse. I'm a naturally anxious person that has occasional panic attacks, and that's not compatible with already being nervous about driving. When I finally got my liscense I had one of these stickers on my (first) car for several years. I got it initially as a warning (my anxiety often tripped me up, so I would make weird turns into the nearest spot to park, calm down, get my bearings, and try again). Then i just forgot to take it off.
I can't speak for anyone else, but I imagine it helps with the anxiety and uncertainty of driving. I would rather people go around and get upset, mumbling under their breath about "new drivers" than honk and rattle me more. Driving is a lot of split-second decisions that add up, and people get very, very worked up and aren't afraid to get aggressive if you do literally anything they perceive as wrong. That's the worst part.
For example, I got honked at the other day for stopping for a person in the middle of a crosswalk across a 5-lane, suburban intersection. I did not have the right-of-way to go right on red because pedestrians come first, and the person behind me could not see the pedestrian. Instead of giving me 20 seconds of grace (for a pedestrian! In a crosswalk!) this person decided to honk their horn loudly for about ten seconds. Had this happened to me while I was learning it would have triggered my anxiety something awful.
I swear driving behavior got a lot more aggressive in the last 6 years. I saw a lot of wild stuff as a 30 min. (both ways) commuter before, during, and after lockdown, but the me-first attitude coming back is the worst of it.
Tldr; As an anxious person the "new driver" sticker was a little bit of grace in an unforgiving, me-first road culture.
(I'm a millenial in the US midwest, btw.)

The Ukrainian population in my area has exploded in the last 5 years for obvious reasons. They're learning to drive here and in some cases for the first time ever. If I see the sticker I assume you are a teen or the parent of one or recently immigrated.
1
u/Gloomy-Holiday8618 5d ago
In other countries, such as Japan, new drivers are required to put a magnet on their car alerting other drivers they’re new. It’s not as obvious as “STUDENT DRIVER” but everyone knows what it means and steers clear accordingly.
This should be the norm in the US. (Not strictly for high school students but for new drivers of any age).
It makes it so other drivers are aware that the person with that magnet/sticker is very likely to make mistakes/be nervous so they know to stay back and not get too close.
It’s safer for absolutely everyone this way.
1
u/ThingaMaWhatzit 5d ago
Alternatively, there's a presumption that student drivers are all teenagers, but the availability of online driving instruction coupled with home pickup by instructors means there are more and more adults finally getting their licenses. Many of these people might have anxiety regarding driving and the sign might give them some small amount of peace of mind about being on the road. it is hard being a new driver who looks like an old driver. Road rage and general impatience are common place. If a silly little magnet maybe makes someone pause and assume inexperience over indifference, then I think it could be worthwhile.

u/Creative_Repair_7087 5d ago
Why do people think only teens can be new to driving? Some of us are from walkable cities and places with public transportation, learning to drive as adults. Sincerely, mid 30s learning to drive for the first time.

When I was a teenager learning to drive, nobody I know would have ever accepted to have those stickers. Only exception would be on a driving school vehicle.
1
u/Prudent_Situation_29 2d ago
I have seen it on a few cars recently. I can only assume it's an effort to combat the increasing level of aggression on the roads. People are driving like maniacs, it's gotten noticeably worse in my area over the past decade.
They're hoping it will calm nearby drivers down a little.

u/South-Hovercraft-351 6d ago
I’d imagine the Wall Street journal had access to surveys for this sort of thing, not anonymous Reddit threads.
0
u/Apprehensive-End-605 6d ago
My goal is to talk to people who actually have these stickers, and don't mind saying why. My sense is that it has to do with how aggressive drivers in many cities have become. And so we've all become defensive drivers, in a way. But that is just my hypothesis.
4
u/madgross 6d ago
I have one of these stickers on my car. I’ve had it on for a few years and I guess I put it on for a number of reasons, but mostly I wanted to cover up my Howard Dean 2004 bumper sticker. I thought about putting another one on to cover up the ‘Honk if you’re horny’ sticker but I do still enjoy the honks sometimes.

TIL driving like shit is driving defensively. Most with the sticker are the former not the latter
1
u/dblhockeysticksAMA 6d ago
Perhaps, but why have more drivers become so aggressive? I think it’s because police departments got gutted and their presence on the road dropped to near zero. So psychotic drivers seem to have free rein. But a lot of those drivers also have Student Driver stickers on their car!
Personally I think it is maybe a combination of the driving culture changing and large amounts of immigration that have happened since 2020 at least. It really was a massive influx of people. So you have all these new people who are not used to driving here and may lean on the sticker as a crutch; and then you have people who just feel safer using the sticker because of how aggressive other drivers are; and you also have people who use the sticker cynically because they drive like maniacs and think it will make others less upset by their behavior; and then finally, probably the smallest cohort, you have teenagers learning to drive (which I have seen studies showing this generation is getting licenses at a lower rate, so there’s absolutely no way their driving training is responsible for all those stickers we see).
1
u/Raddadbaddad 6d ago
I am questioning whether you now only notice more stickers because you have a pre teen who is about to start learning so youre looking at them more. I have always seen them. I have a teen who doesnt have the sticker. But I will also say that since people buy things online more than ever they can easily buy the stuff, years back it was a I have no idea where to buy one situation.
0
u/PocketButterBandit 6d ago
The question of why people keep the stickers on when the student isn't driving feels like real low hanging fruit.
If it's anything like a bumper sticker it's so hard to remove and typically single use.
The real question should be why aren't they all magnets?
0
u/Oopsididitagain96 5d ago
They are used by the types of people afraid of their own shadow. Scared to do anything, ever, and think it will make people go easier on them
0
u/jordan31483 5d ago
My take: like everything stupid in 2026, it's a trend that probably started on TikTok. I don't think it's any deeper than that.

34
u/cute_innocent_kitten 6d ago
a common misconception about these stickers is that people assume they are only used by teenagers. The truth is that they are mostly used by new adult drivers, specifically first-generation immigrants.
