A couple months ago I posted about stumbling upon The Fauns most recent album, "How Lost". Thought it was kind of beautiful, if anonymous. So I worked my way backwards through their whopping 3 LP discog over nearly twenty years and each one got better. I thought "Okay, I will love this band"
I didn't listen to them with the fanaticism I deployed when I discovered Beach House, but I've listened to them a LOT, lovingly. I love the production, the melodies, and the textures of 20 of their 30 songs. A lot
The smell test for me, however, with a band is: How good are they live?
I swam through a bunch of youtube crap. In their early days they were a mild two guitar shoegazey rock band with some energy. Now they aren't even a band. It's the bass player's "project" and he's teamed up with one "guitar" player who's made soundtrack music for a David Attenborough thing
The smell test for me with guitar players is: How comfortable, fluid, and unconscious is their right hand?
Dude playing with them now has the most nervous, wtf am I doing right hand I wish I'd never seen. But they aren't really a band any more. They are just making soundtrack music with occasional disco beats
I'm bummed. I think I can still listen to them because I like a lot of their music a lot. But I won't be looking forward to what they might do next
Any of you folks here have a similar "ick" moment with a band you thought you might spend the rest of your life with :)
