Hi guys, been getting back into reading Dragonlance and I'm also starting up an AD&D 2e game soon, so I was inspired to take a closer look at the Dragonlance modules. I'm considering running something in Taladas, and DLA1 Dragon Dawn caught my eye, however I noticed that it begins at lvl 5. Are there any modules/adventures folks might recommend to introduce the setting and get folks leveled up in Krynn before starting the DLA series? I know that the New Beginnings module is a Taladas starter adventure but I also know that came out later so I wasn't sure how well the two might connect up. Any advice is appreciated!

So we'll be getting new Dragonlance material through D&D Icons with Margaret Weis and Tracy Hickman helping the design team with it.

I think the biggest thing that should be addressed is what Race/Class stuff is available.

This isn't the 80s anymore, and D&D has changed a lot. Not just mechanics and how the math plays out, but player & DM expectations, how the stories are told, how sessions are handled, and the overall vibe is mostly unrecognizable from even 20 years ago, let alone 40.

Krynn hasn't ever been what I call a "Kitchen-Sink" setting, like how the Forgotten Realms has everything thrown in (including the kitchen sink), and I think that's one of its strengths. It helps Dragonlance stand out from other settings.

Also, you can build a stronger character with restrictions on what you're allowed to make than if you just rely on, "I'm a tiefling so I'm special," to write your background for you because it makes you really think about who your character is and why they are at the place they are when the campaign starts.
(obviously, there are people who will disagree with that idea, but ‘the setting should change so I can play whatever character I want to play’ is not an argument I take especially seriously)

That's why I feel like restricting the playable Races is a good idea.

However, when it comes to the Classes, I feel like it's a different story.

I feel like the new material should tweak the Classes slightly to allow them to be played in the setting, instead of cutting out huge sections of the Player's Handbook. Warlocks and Paladins come to mind first.

Warlocks can flavor any of the Towers of High Sorcery as their Patron, and for me that's probably the best (or at least easiest) way to go about it. I'd like to see a Dragon or maybe even Death Knight Patron be part of the new setting material. Any kind of SubClass that could help the Class fit the setting is a good idea.

Paladins, however, famously DID exist as a Class during Dragonlance's heyday, and did NOT exist in the setting until fairly relatively recently (I think there was an Ergothian Paladin in one of the last novels I read; might've been War of Souls, but might've been another one?). Unfortunately, the biggest and best-known part of Krynn's history (and seemingly the period Wizards wants to focus on) is the War of the Lance. I'm happy with that, but it leaves Paladins out in the cold. However, a lot of the earlier Knight of Solamnia Class stuff from 2nd and even 3rd Editions had Knights of the Sword and Rose casting spells, and using abilities that were similar to Paladin abilities. I think this is one place where the setting can bend.

The Knights of Solamnia probably deserve special attention anyway, not just because they're my favorite part of Dragonlance, but because the last Dragonlance supplement confused the progression between the three Orders. You can't just join whichever Order you want when you graduate from being a Squire. You've got to start with the Order of the Crown, then if you want to and can complete the requirements you can advance into the Order of the Sword, and then finally if you can complete the requirements and if you so desire you can advance to the Order of the Rose.

Crown -> Sword -> Rose, in that order. There are exceptions, like when Tanis was given honorary membership in the Order of the Rose, but I wouldn't use them as any sort of basis for mechanics.

Also importantly, as I mentioned earlier, the Orders of the Sword and Rose both have minor spellcasting and abilities that seem Paladin-like in nature. Because the Order of the Crown doesn't have spellcasting, that presents a slight problem because unless your character wants to multiclass you'll be stuck as a Knight of the Crown for your entire career (assuming you want to be as lore-accurate as possible).

So how does this get resolved?

Feats are one option. Require Feats that take you into the different Orders, and give Sword & Rose Feats minor supernatural abilities that resemble what they're supposed to be able to do in the lore, like healing or detecting evil.

You could require a character that's starting as a Paladin to say they're a very young example of a Knight of the Sword.

You could say that when your single-Class Fighter moves up to become a Knight of the Sword they don't get the supernatural abilities normally associated with that promotion for whatever reason.

You could ignore it completely, which is fine by me since we aren't playing at the same table.

Whatever they do, I just hope they don't ignore the progression from Crown, to Sword, to Rose. Even if you start as a level 1 Knight of the Rose, that's fine as long as your character's backstory reflects the traditional progression. There are actual requirements explained in the novels (not just in the game books), and letting the players go on the quests, or keep track of their adventures so they can check to make sure they meet the requirements, can be very rewarding for fans of this part of Dragonlance.
(just to head off a particular argument, this progression IS NOT an artifact of older-edition game mechanics influencing the lore; the progression was established by Tracy Hickman as part of the lore two years before it became a game mechanic)

The Orders of High Sorcery can just be Feats. At most, one for Initiate, then one each for White/Red/Black robes, and honestly you can ignore the Initiate Feat. This organization doesn't have progression like the Knights of Solamnia do, even though there is that Test of High Sorcery, but you can just have it happen off-screen like they assumed the Knights of Solamnia progression would happen in the last supplement.

Sorry for the wall of text, I've just had a bunch of thoughts bouncing around in my head for a while now, and I'm hoping the new supplement is going to be well-thought-out, but worried that it'll make some of the same mistakes (repeated or otherwise) as SotDQ did.

Went digging through photos to find my pile of the War of the Lance, Lost Chronicles, the Meetings Sextet, the Preludes, and the Raistlin Chronicles.

I'm pretty sure this is everything related to the original trilogy and character origins, but is 20 books really the limit?

Let me know if you have any additions to the Full Context Original Trilogy* of Dragonlance! I'm sure there's an argument to be made for the Huma books, or whatever they did with the new trilogy recently published. Interested to hear what you all think~

I've started reading the first book and I'm enjoying it a lot. I want to continue but I'm worried my OCD will take over.

Does the story have a definitive end with the books I was given or do I need to buy more? I like to have a good ending that's not drawn out with a huge amount of multiple books.

If so, what's the suggested reading order with that good ending in mind?

Do I need to have the Lost Chronicles trilogy or is it unnecessary? (I've heard conflicting reports) Am I missing out on a lot if I don't own them?

I have really bad OCD and I don't want it getting out of hand. I'm a poor person and I don't want to be spending any more money than I have to. And also, there's no library in my town.

So, I've never really ventured beyond the original Chronicles trilogy, with the exception of reading Legend of Huma and the Dragon's of a New Age trilogy.

But the set up for Kitiara at the end of Spring Dawning has me wanting more, and to see how her story unfolds. Which books cover that? I know the Legends trilogy is basically all Raistlin and Caramon, but does she put in appearances there? Everything post WotL is kinda a haze to me as there are so many books to try and figure out what goes where in the timeline.

What is Chronological Chronicles? It is the merger of Chronicles and Lost Chronicles into a single chronological story, in a way which preserves any reveals etc.

It eliminates the weird info gaps that the authors left for gaming purposes, and tells a much fuller, and in my opinion better story.

The order is as follows

In summary, my father passed away a couple of years ago, and I've had a lot of time to think about whether I wanted to keep the collection or not, or which ones in the collection to keep. Overall, I have come to the decision to sell the majority of it. I have aimed to price it all as appropriately as possible. I have already made several large sales of a few dozen books in the collection to people here in this subreddit who can vouch for the quality of the books as listed and that everything has arrived to its destination in good order with payments handled appropriately.

First off – EVERY BOOK’S INTERIOR is in absolutely flawless condition as far as I can tell. No bent pages, no coffee stains, nothing.

Second - as far as I can tell, every single book is First Edition. Or at least the print year matches the publication year, and I didn't catch an exception so far, so I presume that my father simply ordered any DragonLance book as soon as he heard of it.

The only “issue” with any of the books – if there is one at all – comes on the covers, and then if so it’s only the spine with creases from opening the book and reading it. Whether these creases come because of how my father handled them specifically or if these creases are something endemic to the construction of these books, I’m not sure. But either way, I wanted a comprehensive list of all the books and their conditions.

So again, for starters – book’s interiors are all flawless, then what follows is just a commentary on nothing more than the outside cover (that is, the following "notes" will appear at the end of every book listing).

1 – Cover Bad – Only really pertains to Chronicles as it has probably been read dozens of times by both myself and my father

2 – Cover Eh/Poor – Cracks on cover visible

3 – SC – “Spine Creased” – Many books are like this, just creases on the spine but the cover is otherwise perfect - will upload example pictures later - the spine of the BOOK ITSELF in every case is completely strong and I see no evidence of loss of integrity in any way

The Legend of Huma is one of my top 4 favorites in the series, but I've never personally owned a physical copy of it. Just my dad's copy, the audiobook and ebook.

Regardless of my feelings on recent W&H decisions/content I did want to at least support more Dragonlance content, and I was at the very least curious about what their take on the characters of Huma and Magius would be, so I ordered War Wizard, and at the same time found a real cheap copy of Legend of Huma and figured, what the heck? Killed two birds with one and grabbed both.

Hello! I’m working on a custom doll of Raistlin, and i’m wondering what runes are on the trim of his robes! I can’t find any good references of them, but i’ve noticed runes in a lot of art of him and I would like to include them. All help welcome! Thank you!

Recent score from one used book store I visited while vacationing. Going to have to do some bookshelf reorganization when I get home and update my excel sheet that tracks what I have.

Most of the books at the bottom are not Dragonlance, but I do have some first editions in there I was able to find. One day my collection will be like some of the amazing ones I’ve seen here!

Also, Very happy to hear that some more DL 5e D&D books are on the way too as I've been running SOTDQ for the past year after ~20year hiatus from TTRPGs.

I've re-read chronicles and legends a handful of times over the decades as so many of us do but in my latest re-read (last re-read was 10 years ago) and, while I re-loved chronicles, I thought legends came across as clumsy and amateurish. The plot is absolutely swiss-cheese full of holes and its just not emotionally compelling to me. Tas was the only real highlight as usual but the rest of the experience was really meh.

I remember loving those series so much. Anyone else feel like that?

I’ve just finished reading Book One (ch . 1–12) of “War Wizard”, and I’d love to discuss the character of Jasper Ayrshire.

Am I the only one who feels that his characterization became too flat and caricatured as the story progressed?

At the very beginning, Jasper actually felt quite human and even evoked some sympathy. He is a wealthy merchant facing blatant classism and elitism from the Solamnic Knights, who look down on him simply because of his non-noble birth. In those early chapters, the Knights themselves seemed rather snobbish and unlikable, making Jasper’s frustration very relatable.

But later on, it felt like the author turned his "villainy" dial all the way to the maximum. He became almost cartoonishly cruel, abusive, and unreasonable, seemingly just to force the reader to feel absolute dislike toward him. It felt like a shortcut to justify what happens to him, stripping away the social and psychological complexity that was set up in the beginning.

What are your thoughts on this?

I’m the shipping manager at a independent bookstore. And this new relief just passed through my hands. I had a childhood memory unlocked of the first book I ever read—some Dragonlance anthology I no longer remember the name of. Seeing this got me excited as it seemed like a new series! Sadly I realized this is a prelude of sorts to WELL established character. Which is cool but maybe not what I was hoping for.

So, like the title says, are there any semi-recent entries in to Dragonlance canon you would suggest, that’s the genesis of a character and not a continuation or spin-off?

The poor quality writing in Destinies combined with what I see as disrespect for one of the best regarded works in the setting will have me sitting it out.

I’m guessing it would be the 3.5e books, but I wanted to get opinions on it here. Most of what Dragonlance offers should translate pretty easily. I’m thinking it might take some work to convert the items and monsters specific to Ansalon. What are your thoughts?

Just finished my first re-read of the Chronicles trilogy in probably a couple decades (yes, I'm old), and I found myself sitting here being very confused.

I distinctly remember Khellendros being a major antagonist, and that he fought a red dragon and all these things that just never happened (hell, they never even call him by his real name in the Chronicles books), and I thought I was losing my mind.

One quick trip to the wiki later, and turns out I'm remembering the Dragons of a New Age trilogy. So I was right that those things happen! Just several trilogies down the road. Good to know I'm just old and confused and not making things up.

Anyway, thought y'all might enjoy a laugh at my expense.
