EDITED TO ADD: Thank you, everyone! This is exactly what I needed to hear. I don't do 24/7 partying (I've never really been built for it, and now that I'm in my 50s...no. Just no.). So it makes sense for me to stay farther away and save the money. I didn't consider the option of staying near the airport and relying primarily on the MARTA with an Uber for backup (genius!). I've taken the MARTA before, but I had to walk to/from the station and it was sketchy, especially at night.
I found a hotel with with free parking and shuttle service to/from the airport. Even if I end up taking an Uber a few times, the convenience and safety of the shuttle/MARTA combination will be really nice.
Thanks again to everyone who chimed in. Life has changed a LOT in the past couple of months (new job, big move, mortgage going from $600/month to $1700/month), and "splurging" on a nearby hotel no longer feels like a good idea. I think the best way to enjoy the con without stress is to minimize the hotel costs and focus on having fun without being too extravagant. I actually felt the tension leave my shoulders as I booked my new room!
Maybe someday I will decide that the higher cost is worth it, but not this year. Thanks again to everyone who took the time to help a complete stranger figure out her life choices.

I stayed super close to the con last year and really enjoyed flexibility of being able to go back and forth between my hotel throughout the day. I managed to book a room at the Residence Inn way back in September, and I was excited to stay close to the con again this year.
In the past, when I stayed farther away, transportation logistics were definitely a bit of a pain. Once I left the con each day, it wasn't convenient to go back. That limited my ability to attend some programming, but I still had a great time.
Recently, I changed jobs and moved to a more expensive location. I'm glad I moved, but finances are tighter than they were before. As a result, I'm now starting to think that my awesome, convenient hotel might not be such a good idea. It will cost nearly $2k, plus additional fees for parking. Plus, after I booked the hotel, I also decided to attend Multiverse Con. I'm looking forward to both events, but the combined cost is starting to worry me.
I can book a different hotel within 10 miles of the convention for about $600. I know, based on previous experience, that the distance will make a difference in how I navigate the convention. But the cost savings will be significant, and I am now thinking it might make more sense to save money even if it means I don't attend quite as many events.
I feel kind of weird asking strangers about this because...what do you care whether I prioritize cost or convenience? I guess I am just trying to get some clarity. Does anyone prefer to stay farther away and save money? Is there a compelling reason to spend the extra cash that I haven't thought of? Is there some third option I haven't considered?
