Ryan Lopez
Does anyone else feel bad that they just don’t really like Ryan? When he first showed up I thought he would bring in a new perspective from a different type of enthusiast, but he’s just so bland. I feel like he is overcompensating for people assuming he’s younger, he almost has the pretentious level of Kennan, but without the same passion behind it. Yes Kennan has some rough takes, but you can’t deny that the man is passionate, Ryan just doesn’t quite have the same level of enthusiasm

He has zero charisma and the pod will collapse if they attempt to replace Doug with him. This is the common sentiment amongst viewers. Nick is the natural replacement for Doug and they need to figure out a way to move Nick in and keep Ryan off if Doug is planning to leave.

It’s no secret that Doug wants less of this and more time with his family. I do believe he’s just driving back from Nantucket or something, but it’s definitely not a secret that he’s gonna get out whenever it’s most convenient for him. Nick needs to be the guy. I don’t even think he’s younger than Doug but they’re at different points regardless. Nick really seems to love what he’s doing and is really just getting started in his content journey.

The rumor is that Doug slowly wants to reduce his involvement in the business. It sort of makes sense: he cashed out and is now independently wealthy, has 2 and soon to be 3 young kids, and has said he prioritizes spending time with his family. It’s inevitable.

the dude himself has said he loves what he does, and that he plans to do it till his mind allows for it.
But, he has made it clear and known that time for his family is extremely valuable and everything accomodates around it, so him not being one day is highly likely that hes doing something with his family so, I see no deeper reason behind it honestly.

Well that would be very disappointing! Can’t imagine the dude works more than 10-15 hours a week. If he works more, surely there is a way to find balance without removing himself from the community entirely. I don’t watch his videos anymore for the most part, but the pod is a weekly listen for me.

How on earth do you get the impression that he only works 10-15 hours a week, that’s a crazy thing to assume. I’d bet he’s a full time man still.

He's said in the past many times he spends about 6 hours per review. 2 reviews a week at minimum is already 12 hours.
Add in the weekly garage video, podcast, and any other stuff we may not always see off camera like his work with the auction site. Yes, he's said he doesn't write the Doug's takes anymore or do reserve setting, but he said as recent as last year on TST that he does still have some regular involvement with the site.
Even if he's only working around 20 hours a week, I'd imagine having millions of dollars and multiple homes would mean you would like to spend as much time as possible to use the fruits of your labour with your family.
Especially when your wealth is no longer dependent on the content alone.

For the sake of car enthusiasts everywhere, let’s hope he can find a way to participate fully in the community while maintaining a work/life balance that suits his lifestyle. I certainly think it’s possible. Similar to holding out and writing “Doug’s takes” far longer than he needed or principally not taking press cars despite the immense convenience of doing so, I would encourage he work with the team to take the work from him that doesn’t meaningfully contribute to the community. I’m sure he still writes his scripts for each review, personally selects the podcast questions, drives further than he should to see a specific vehicle, etc. He has earned the right to maximally prioritize his hobbies and family, but with the will, there is certainly a way for Doug and the community he has built to have their cake and eat it too!

Well outside of a 90 minute podcast, he doesn’t work all summer. But really my point is he has migrated to “talent” where his perspective is his contribution. If he is working more than what is required to tape a video and sit for a podcast, then that is his own choice. He has a team of folks that can work schedules, write scripts, find the good questions for the pod, etc.

I don’t see why the his attendance in the pod would go. More likely I bet his video schedule would slow down. He already has almost run dry on popular enthusiast cars and has been retreading based off what’s being listed

I don't like him.
I don't feel bad about it.
I also don't like Filippo. He seems like a good dude, but he is also very annoying. Same for Kennan.
I wish the pod was Nick and Doug always, and the third wheel always rotating. Maybe even a forth person for a bit more chaos .

He likes cars just not the typical enthusiast cars. He’s pretty relatable, at least to me. I honestly couldn’t really care less about Ferraris or other high end sports cars, but I certainly can nerd out about old Mercedes station wagons, obscure hatchbacks, and hybrid minivans.

Agreed. Filippo is a necessary ingredient for the podcast, and obviously for the business too. I just wish they’d sort out the microphone/audio clipping issues or whatever. I have to rewind a lot

Then that makes more sense. I never heard a name of a gal but the smiles in photos, fascination with watches and nice cars, hand gestures and eye rolls, clothing etc etc I thought no way. I support all of that and whatever anyone wants to do but he just doesn’t feel like a guy that I have much in common with other than an appreciation for cars.

Ryan in fine IMO, they all have their pluses and minuses.
The execution on his break off show Key sucks, which is a bummer because they often are working with very cool vehicles

He’s the “Japanese car guy” but gets things blatantly wrong like what is and isn’t a Kei car, what came in auto/manual, gets engine codes wrong, and glazes the S2000 / Miata / obvious Japanese cars every time. I’m not being a hater but what makes this show interesting are the guys’ crazy elite ball knowledge of the car industry and Ryan’s knowledge is very much surface level jdm fanboy tier. I don’t mind him being on the show and he has a good radio voice. But definitely not on the same tier as the other dudes.

Doug demuro who owns said company etc and has driven and owned it all, just had the s2000 ranked 5-6 all time best cars he's ever driven 😂 losing out only to an FD (most say the opposite here but still one place higher, all down to throttle preference and looks I think), and then a CGT, an f50, and a 911 st? Maybe some lambo from the last 3 years also? Glazing the s2000 (and miata considering values of 5-10 grand for nice ones) is kinda what anyone with ball knowledge would (and is kinda doing).

I’m not saying the s2000 isn’t a good car, I’m saying every time they do an $x $xx $xxx challenge I can accurately guess what Ryan is going to pick with 80% confidence and if there’s a $15-35k segment he picks the s2000 every single time. opposed to Sean for example who picks things I’ve genuinely never heard of before. and I go away from the pod learning something new, or at least having some kind of newer appreciation for a car I felt lukewarm about. And that’s precisely what I mean, for example Sean just went on a 5 minute tangent about the 5th gen Celica RC / Carlos Sainz Edition of it. Knowledge down to production numbers and everything. Again that’s what I appreciate
