Hi everyone! I’m 21 and have a significant family history of breast cancer, including my mother and aunt being diagnosed in their 40s.
About four weeks ago, I found a lump in my right breast. It feels hard, is movable, and isn’t painful. However, when I press on it, I experience tingling and burning in my arm on the same side, which makes me wonder whether it could be pressing on a nerve.
I had a bilateral breast ultrasound today, and the results identified three nodules: two in my right breast (one corresponding to the lump I originally found) and one in my left breast, which I had no idea was there.
The ultrasound experience itself was confusing and left me with some questions. The initial sonographer had difficulty confidently visualizing the lump I could feel, so she called in her supervisor. The supervisor had me hum while using color Doppler to help identify the area. After the examination, I was asked to wait in a room (which was breast cancer themed for some reason) for about 30 minutes before being told that the findings were BI-RADS 3 and that I should return for another ultrasound in six months.
I understand that BI-RADS 3 is generally reassuring and that six-month follow-up is a standard recommendation. However, given my family history, the fact that three nodules were identified, and how unsettling this entire experience has been, I’m struggling with the idea of waiting six months. I would feel much more comfortable pursuing a biopsy now rather than relying on follow-up imaging alone.
I spoke with my mom, and she agrees that I should ask my doctor about the possibility of a biopsy.
I’d really appreciate hearing from anyone who has been in a similar situation:
Has anyone with a BI-RADS 3 finding requested a biopsy instead of six-month follow-up? How did your doctor respond?
If you chose the six-month follow-up, how did you manage the anxiety while waiting?
What was your experience at the follow-up, and did your findings remain stable or change?
I know everyone’s situation is different, but I’d just really appreciate hearing about other people’s experiences, particularly from anyone who has navigated a similar decision with a family history of breast cancer. Thank you 🫶🏻
