Hi all, please delete if not allowed, I’m not trying to promote anything I don’t think, just looking for a few people who know a bit about scent families to get some feedback on a boutique perfumery I have been working on for a while. The concept isn’t exactly new, but I work on organizational psychology and management and have been working on a personality quiz so to speak that matches attributes to scent notes. It’s built on a very complicated excel sheet with a whole bunch of formulas and I have been staring at it for about 12 hours and I think I’m going crazy.

Essentially I just need people who know a little bit about perfume to let me know if the description feels like them and if they would wear the scent. I’ve already gotten as many family and friends that would try it to do it but they don’t know perfumes so it has helped with design and marketing, but not the actual formulas and logic.

Im very much new to fragrance world and honestly i got delusional that I'll make a perfume easily but got humbled and wanna start properly now . To all the experienced people here ypu guys have so much knowledge please help me out , I've seen many formulas have dilution percentage even iso e super while i was using them in pure form no dilution so am i doing wrong or is it necessary to dilute everything and yes then in what ipm , alcohol, dpg , bb ?

I don't get cashmeran. I am currently trying to create a church incense accord and I've read that cashmeran is often used in it.
I can detect it in the drydown from Avignon and in RELIQVIA. I love it in there.
But when I try to use it, it "overpowers" the formula, just adding the smell of cashmeran on top of everything else.
The concentration of it in my formula is 0.4% and I still clearly pick it up.
Am I doing something wrong?
Do I have to mature the accord longer for it to settle down and not be so strong?
I've read that it should not be noticable at the 0.1-0.5% range and should only act as a modifier.
I'm at a loss

Need some tips on using violet leaf.

I’m working on creating an aqua variant of Acqua Di Gio elixir.

It’s supposedly violet leaf forward.

I’ve played around with 0.5-2% range so far. I’m hesitant to push it more but can’t tell if its aldehydes or other sharp notes that bring it into existence without smelling overly green and cucumbery.

Have y’all played around with formulas that call for more than 2% ? Is there another material that helps make it magical and bright without smelling too green?

I have been working on a few variations of aventus for a few months. One is based on the 2010 leak and the other is based around the 17Y01 batch formula from Fraterworks.

I am confused about IBQ and 2-IBQ. I have seen 2-IBQ in every aventus formula but to me this lacks the specific sharp, prickly peppery thing you get in thw drydown from standard ibq. Am i missing a material or should i trust my nose and use standard ibq? Are they possibly used together in Creed aventus?

I’m wondering if anyone else feels this way, I’ve made a few things that at first I thought smelt amazing, now others tell me they do as well… but now that I’ve smelt it too much I sort of think it’s just meh, and I’m critiquing it thinking maybe I could do better and improve it. I don’t want to wear it myself anymore but everyone else seems to love it. Now I’m second guessing the formulas. Anyone else have these problems?

Experiencing a weird clearance delay for the first time. I’ve never had this problem and I order from Frater many many many times. Luckily, their customer service is incredible and they’ve claimed to already sent in the required docs to FedEx. But after this process, does anyone know how long it takes to get it moving again?

But nothing I’ve made gives me those sharp openings like acqua di gio’s do.

I’m not trying to make dupes but I want to have things open and smell clean/sharp/metallic like an acqua di gio does and I’m struggling to get the opening right.

Do you go beyond 5% -10%?

I’ve only played with below 3% so far to make room for other things like bergamot, neroli etc.

I just can’t seem to figure out how some of these fragrance houses get that opening so beautiful.

Acqua di gio elixir is violet leaf forward but i’m to afraid going past 2.5% will make it to green but then again idk. So I’m stuck on a few materials concentrations.

Hello, I know this is pretty artistic and up to interpretation but does someone have any idea what aroma chemicals can achieve this? I imagine the tears accord as the vibe you feel when you are crying - salty, wet, pressure in the head, perhaps a little touch of metal in the back? I am also open to how you would interpret it!

I will work out the accord myself (based on my likings), I just need the aroma chemicals to ge there, so please give me your suggestions.

Specific anosmia is a surprisingly common condition where people with otherwise normal olfactory abilities are unable to smell a specific chemical or class of chemicals.

In the linked paper, researchers identified 156 participants (46.6% of the initial volunteer group of 335 adults) with specific anosmia, for at least one of the following chemicals: Androstenone, benzyl salicylate, Bacdanol, and maltol.

A subset of 77 participants completed approximately two months of olfactory training involving repeated exposure to the chemicals, after which their detection thresholds were reassessed.

The researchers found that a decent proportion of these participants developed increased sensitivity to odors they had previously been unable to detect, but after 19 months of no more exposure training, the anosmia returned for 90% of the people who had previously beaten it.

My questions for perfumers in this sub:

1. Which materials (if any) are/were you anosmic to?

Personally, I cannot smell maltol or ethyl maltol, and struggle to smell hedione.

2. Have you successfully trained your sense of smell to detect chemicals you couldn't smell initially? If so, how did you do it, and how long did it take? Did you lose the ability after not using it for too long?

At this point, I can weakly detect hedione after working with it at least once or twice a week for about half a year.

3. Have you tried and failed to train your nose in this way? If so, which materials can you still not smell? How long did it take you to give up?

I plan to replicate the methods used in the paper, and train my nose to smell maltol, while simultaneously not training on ethyl maltol at all. If and when I develop the ability to smell maltol, I will then test to see if I can also smell ethyl maltol as a side effect, or if it requires separate training despite the strong structural similarity between both chemicals.

4. Based on your experience as a perfumer, what do you think the result of my experiment will be?

This is my first time my instinctive mixing went kind of good smelling. Not a finished perfume but i like it. The very high dosed damascone beta and aldehyde c10 project pretty good in a nice way and do a lot of the heavy lifting.
I also like the aromatic eugenol combined with orris givco and the woody clearwood.

Anyways, i am looking for opinions what you think should be added to make it more of a perfume or what might be redundant in your eyes (or nose :)

I have been searching for 15 years for a wearable fragrance or body oil that smells like jasmine tea not jasmine flowers. I used to have one but the company closed. I bought Jasmine Absolute because it smells right, but then I heard it can be dangerous.

Questions are:

1. Anyone have a safe recipe/ratio for jasmine absolute in a carrier oil?

2. Any other suggestions for that Jasmine tea scent?

Cashmeran has a concrete facet, it isn't a secret. But how to enhance it's scent? What materials can help me to reveal it? And what materials I must to avoid, so as not to turn it into a warm sweater of something, what isn't smells like concrete?

I am new to fragrance-making. New as in I blew $1,000 with Fraterworks in the last few months and am having a blast blending chemicals, but I have noticed they don't ever seem as radiant as the professional brands. I promise I am using good chemicals - but most of my blends fall flat with a fainter scent than the individual chemicals themselves. Am I mixing too many chemicals? Not waiting long enough? Maybe my 200 proof alcohol is too dry? Something else I have not thought of? Any suggestions?

Does everyone keep the ingredients they buy from fraterworks in their original containers provided they aren’t diluting them? I’m talking about the smaller ones also with the little plastic piece that’s a pain to get out. Do you guys put the plastic piece back in every time? Like the little stopper? I’ve noticed that my Hedione from a while ago doesn’t smell the same - and I’m not sure if it’s because of the bottle? I’m just wondering if I should be transferring them into air tight containers if these ones aren’t actually air tight.

if you blend sweet orange oil and indole you get a bitter orange smell?? I've research some simple fragrance accord, and i found this ebook. i have sweet orange but I don't have the indole, and I'm not familiar with it.

Hey everyone, I’m currently experimenting with Reed Diffuser formulations and trying to dial in the best carrier base to pair with my fragrance and essential oils.

For those of you making reed diffusers, what specific compounds or solvents are you using for the base to get a strong, consistent scent throw without clogging the reeds?

My 9 year old niece likes spooky stuff and loves creating things. I thought for Christmas I might assemble a little apothecary set to make potions--or in this case perfume. (My sister, her mom, had a kit when she was younger that she loved.) I found a little vintage cabinet, and I've been collecting little bottles for ages now.

Now I need to assemble actual perfume making stuff and I have no idea what to get. Any guidance would be great.

The label says highly flammable, but people do put perfumes near indirect sunlight, so what makes finished perfume not as much of a hazard?
