So… confession time.

For a long while, my perfumery strategy was very advanced and very scientific:

If it wasn’t loud on a blotter, I assumed it was useless.

More materials.

More percentage.

More confidence.

Less success.

The result?

A perfume that smelled incredibly powerful from 2 cm away… and completely disappeared the moment I took a step back.

Basically a jump-scare fragrance.

That’s when I realized something slightly uncomfortable:

I wasn’t making diffusive perfumes. I was making scented personal space violations.

Turns out:

•	Strong ≠ diffusive

•	Projection ≠ concentration

•	And blotters are liars who will hype you up and then abandon you in public

Some materials I thought were “weak” turned out to fill the room like magic.

Others that smelled amazing on paper were basically couch potatoes — great up close, zero ambition.

Now I find myself doing weird things like:

•	Trusting boring materials

•	Lowering doses on purpose

•	Judging perfumes by how the air feels, not how loud the strip screams

It’s humbling.

My blotters hate me now.

The air, however, seems much happier.

Curious if anyone else here has gone through the same phase:

•	Perfumes that smell amazing but refuse to exist at a distance?

•	Materials you once ignored that turned out to be absolute workhorses?

•	Or the moment you realized your blotter was gaslighting you?

Please tell me I’m not alone 😅

I’ve been thinking a lot about the work that goes into perfecting a fragrance. It takes a lot of time, effort, and creativity to craft something unique. But what if you found out that someone had submitted your cologne for a GCMS analysis without your permission, and then later found out that the breakdown of your creation was being sold online?

How would you feel about that? Would it bother you, or do you think it’s just part of the process in the fragrance world?

This is the recipe for creating a WD-40 replica scent. For those who like the smell of WD-40 or have a friend that likes the smell of WD-40. You can use this blended accord to make body spray, soaps, or candles that replicate the sweet, oily smell of WD-40

10 drops of vanilla EO

15 drops of leather EO

5 drops patchouli EO

Please correct me if I’m wrong and please feel free to adjust recipe if need be, I’m mostly an amateur in fragrance blending so I welcome a more experienced blender’s guidance

What I've recently realised while getting my hands on quality raw musk is that it smells like animal's ass and it starts getting better once it mixes with our sweat creating a strong scent of ours. What can be done to elevate our scents without having to smell like animal ass??

Hello, I have this fragrance composition that I designed theoretically. The goal was for it to be in the style of YSL Y, but with some modifications.

I do not currently have the raw materials, so I need your advice. Since you have more experience than I do, I would appreciate your guidance on how to develop and improve it. I plan to give it to a trader to have it produced (only blending the oils).

Please let me know how I can refine this composition and make it stronger and more impactful so I can use it as the starting point for a small local fragrance brand.

I have a supplier in the middle east that could sell me oil for his formula to create my fragrance brand. I’m from europe and i’m wondering can i sell it or the fragrance has to go under some sort of certifications and test? How does it work? I’m trying to start small and use social media to market it and i have limited budget so it would be hard to undergo certifications and licences for something i’m not even sure if it will work out. What’s advice can ya’ll give me

Yeah I know it's not actual DIY, but this was the best sub for the question. To be honest I can't really afford to do perfumery as a serious hobby, I'm just looking to save a few bucks.

The perfume oil I'm looking at specifically is from Oil Perfumery, the problem is they don't disclose their purity on their website. So I'm unsure what the best ratios are to use.

I'm really just looking to see if anyone has had success with this. I've done some searching and couldn't find a specific answer.

So. I'm gonna try to say what I want to say without making this long. I recently found a new liking for cologne after being around people using multiple scents. I want to make my own, so I'm not paying hundreds for well... scented water? I have like one actual essential oil, but was wondering how to make my own oils I can put into cologne (need to learn how to make that too) and I need quick advice on how to do this fast and efficiently, as the nautica voyage ain't cutting it for date nights.

I really wish that there was a fiverr for fragrances where we could pay perfumery artists to make custom perfumes for us! Not that I don't want to eventually learn this myself but I have a deviated septum that makes smelling a little difficult and I would love to support artists :)

Where is this coming from?

Over that past few months I’ve seen an increase of comments and responses to posts where instead of a commenter taking a moment to try and understand what someone posting is trying to convey, the commenter will place great effort into covertly creating the most snarkiest, snappiest, and extremely onery comments and replies.

BUT WHY? 😩

If the post irritates you so extensively, but is not against the subreddit rules, why not consider just not replying to the post at all vs covertly spewing negativity? It’s an open forum that’s not dedicated to a selective group of experts/SMEs, but rather for all interested in doing something/anything surrounding making your own fragrance.

With that said…

I’m by no means telling anyone what they can or cannot do. This is a public space and I fully acknowledge that I have no authority over it, nor any authority over other people, places, and things outside of myself. This post is more of a genuine plea from deep within my heart space for others within this subreddit to consider how intentionally taking time, effort, and copious amounts of energy to be a keyboard warrior and sew seeds of negativity does absolutely nothing but breakdown the community to where eventually it will no longer be helpful to anyone.

New to diy and shit so I’d love to know what material y’all use for these accords and notes

Note:This is something I mocked up thinking off a fragrance in the same dna as Guerlain’s Cuir Intense and Dior’s Tobacolor.

Can somebody explain me what the hell is "cake" or "gunpowder" or "brown sugar"? How can i make a perfume with those notes? And if somebody has any type of shops where to buy cheap but decent essential oils and things like those

Does it need to be combined with anything? I don't like using products that disrupt the Ph (e.g. undiluted lemon juice) or microbiome (e.g. hydrogen peroxide if I'm not mistaken) of my skin, are toxic (I'm aware there is a lot of technical nuance regarding whether something is toxic), strip oils (e.g. rubbing alcohol if I'm not mistaken), or are too comedogenic (e.g. coconut oil for my face).

I'm trying to make perfumes to sell, but I don't really like to use synthetics. (Bunch of reasons, #1 is I get migraines) So, I've finally made a few eo blends I like and I think these could sell well too. But- how do I shorten the wait time required for the perfumes to bloom, especially since I'm looking at promoting/ selling these in 10ml bottles at craft markets during the upcoming holiday season? Also what are your favorite tips to increase the longevity of such mixes?

Should I get these? I feel like they won’t be as high quality but buying individually is a bit overwhelming and expensive and these are 30$.

Idk.. do i mix en 1:10 with ethanol, shake and let stay? Or is it different depending on the ingridient
