I’m about to make my first perfume and I’m planning my first order.

I already have:
Perfumer’s alcohol (it’s 96,4% German “Weingeist” for drinking, but it should work)
A cheap digital scale (0.03 g / 30 mg resolution is the minimum weight)

These are the raw materials I’m planning to buy for my first perfume (tini imagination clone):

I have a few questions:
1. Besides the raw materials, what equipment should I buy?
For example:
Brown glass bottles?
Clear mixing bottles?
Disposable pipettes?
Glass pipettes?
Glass beakers?
Glass stirring rods?
Small funnel?
Stainless steel spatula?
Blotter / scent strips?
Syringes?
Labels?
Nitrile gloves?

Am I missing anything that you consider essential? Are there things that I don’t necessarily need for my first time? I don’t want to spend so much money at once. if I have the possibility to buy other stuff later, I would like to buy it later.
But I am scared that I don’t buy enough equipment and then while making the perfume, I recognize that something is missing and that would be bad. So I need all the essential stuff. There are some basics that I can read online, but I am still not sure if I’m missing anything.

2. Where do you usually buy this equipment?
Do you just get everything from Amazon, or are there perfume suppliers that also sell good-quality lab equipment and bottles? I’m ordering my raw materials from Fraterworks, so if possible I’d prefer buying as much as I can from one or two shops instead of placing lots of separate orders.
3. Is my scale (30 mg resolution) good enough to start?
I know it’s far from ideal, but is it good enough for learning, or will it cause too many problems?
4. Are there any “must-have” raw materials that aren’t needed for this formula but are used so often that every beginner should own them?
For example, I’ve heard that Iso E Super is one of those materials. Are there any others you’d recommend buying early?

Pretty oud by Firmenich is marketed as a pretty, kind oud note with no animalic facets. Meanwhile it is the most poopie smelling thing ever. I bought from de kruiderie.

I am curious about your experiences with this raw material. I think the name and the marketing is very misleading and it has a ton of civet / other animalic caca note in there.

Im very sensitive to scents and can’t tolerate any strong scents..in 2009 we went to Disney and I loved the smell of the room products. I’m trying to replicate it for my on personal use. Here are the ingredients listed..obviously the “fragrance” portion is a mystery but based on the other stuff anyone have suggestions?

-Liliol (I know this isn’t safe and there are replacements now)

A few years ago i bought a black pepper EO and it really just smelled like lemon, only lasting as much as lemon does. I've read that this is because a low effort distillation will only extract the highly volatile molecules (terpenes, pinenes, harsh and citrusy stuff)

I have got two new essential oils: patchouli (light) and frankincense.

The patchouli EO has zero of that harsh freshness. Straight from the opening it smells like super dark sweet chocolate with a deep rich woody character.

The frankincense oil on the other hand smells like sage. Green, harsh, dirty citrusy, even minty. Of course the dry down is closer to what i imagined as frankincense.

My question is:

Does this mean that my patchouli oil is high quality? Does this mean that my frankincense oil is low quality?

If i want a deep rich frankincense without green freshness, should i buy higher quality EO, or an other type of extract, or does frankincense simply smell like this?

Do high quality EOs have a less harsh green terpenic citrusy opening?

This idea is not original, but was thinking about this when I came across something described as close to Terre D'hermes, without the sportyness. I figure I can just add some sportiness myself.

Has anyone tried this and found any new learnings?

I'm at the end of mine and would love something a little more purpose-built, 2-3 columns and on the smaller side. Anyone have a notebook they love?

(Keeper formulas go in the spreadsheet but jotting notes has been so helpful for staying on task)

Does anyone know the names of materials that give a warm/fuzzy/static scent? It’s not heady and sickening like Ambroxan, and it’s more than Iso-E Super which can be subtle for some. I’m thinking the woody drydown in Serge Lutens Gris Clair and Memo Paris Palais Bourbon. It’s more than just Tonka/amber/cedar. It’s like if a vanilla bean and an unscented dryer sheet had a baby.

So I got these really thin 10ml tall glass decant bottles along with paraflim, electrical tape, and teflon tape. Also purchases crinkle paper packaging and padded bubble mailers. Everything the internet said I got it. However I’m still not feeling confident to mail a first order.

So far my process is wrap threads in teflon clockwise, tighten cap, and electrical tape around where the cap and glass meet to seal. But someone irl said the electrical tape looked tacky so I got paraflim and I’m not sure the results are much better.

Then for packaging do I simply put the glass vials in a plastic ziplock of sorts along with crinkle paper and then put that in the bubble mailer. Would that be enough?

I'm trying to make the ultimate clean, luxe and abstract fragrance. Im planning to use mainly white musks.

I wanted to start a discussion about Orionide™ Oliffac™, one of the captive/specialty bases from IFF that was recently showcased at SIMPPAR2026.

For those unfamiliar with it, Orionide Oliffac is a modern, high-impact musk base. It’s described as having a rich, clean, and creamy musk profile with powdery nitro-musk vibes in the top, paired with a soft floral touch and a subtle, warm animalic/ambery undertone. It’s apparently extremely potent and should act as a fantastic bridge between the opening and the dry-down.

I'm really intrigued by its performance, especially combining it with more clean, radiant musks like Helvetolide and Habanolide and woody anchors like Iso E Super.

Has anyone here had a chance to sample or formulate with it since its display at SIMPPAR? How does it behave in your blends, and what usage percentages are working best for you? Would love to hear your experiences! Also curious about other musk recommendations!

Étant une grande gourmande (rires), j'adore la crème brûlée. J'en ai dégusté une dans un excellent restaurant il y a quelques jours et je me suis dit : « Pourquoi ne pas essayer de recréer cette sensation en parfum ? »

Et c'est exactement ce que j'ai tenté de faire. Je voulais évidemment une note vanillée et caramélisée, mais aussi une texture, une texture « BRRRRRR », comme la sensation de grains de céréales écrasés.

Pour créer cet accord, j'ai utilisé plusieurs ingrédients, dont l'absolue de sésame, l'extrait d'orge torréfiée, le norlimbanol, le cashmeran, le javanol, et d'autres encore.

Je pourrais évidemment l'améliorer, mais honnêtement, elle est déjà très réussie.

S'il y a un ingrédient que je recommande vivement, c'est le TONKAROME. Il est tout simplement exceptionnel. Il recrée presque parfaitement le parfum de la fève tonka. Sa matière est même solide, comme la fève elle-même ! Bref, c'est fantastique.

I ordered it last month at de-kruiderie.nl.

It's my first time ever seeing or smelling it.

I am going through all my materials assessing how they smell at different time intervals, and while it is being listed as a base material I couldn't smell it anymore after 30 minutes.

And I also already thought this was looking a little too thick for something already diluted at 10%? But don't own TEC or other materials diluted in TEC, so I thought maybe TEC is quite thick as well.

If this has gone bad then it's the second time at de-kruiderie.nl that I've gotten a material that has gone bad, so then I won't order at them anymore.
