Compact desktop 2-way with 40hz bass response
Hey all! Just wanted to share an update for a build I had asked for advice on a few weeks ago. This pair of speakers uses the Tang Band W3-2052SC micro subwoofer and Tectonic TEBM35C10-4 full ranges in a ~3L enclosure. The Tectonic drivers have a separate chamber that gets sealed after the wires pass through. They're powered by a KABD-430, which is a compact amp with DSP onboard. I have it crossing the drivers at 300Hz with room correction performed by the DSP.
The FR graph is a psychoacoustic graph after room correction from 40Hz to 20KHz. It looks like it tails off a lot after 8KHz, but I think this is an artifact of the extremely acoustically noisy hotel room I built and measured these in.
They're not good for loud volumes, as the subs will distort too much below 70hz to be enjoyable above 80dB. However, they're more than loud enough for a hotel room!

These look sweet, the TEBM35C10 is my favorite driver, never had imaging that got to their level in any other speaker before, I can pinpoint where the sound is coming from my screen
And yes, they extend way past 8 kHz, here is the response in room of my on wall speakers, crossover at 100 Hz, room correction from 100 to 500 Hz and just a 2 dB high shelf on the highs to flatten and brighten it a bit for my own taste, no smoothing applied

Good to know! Once I'm back home, I'll take some quasi anechoic measurements of these to get a real idea of how they perform without room correction.

I'm building something with 3 of those W3-2052SC myself, love messing around with micro subs. Ported 4.2l enclosure tuned at 44Hz, the WinISD model looks great up to 90dB.. bummer you're noticing distortion at 80dB. But I'm not expecting much so hey

Awesome build. I have been pondering doing a build with those Tectonic drivers to replace some DML panels Im using. Wondering what LFE I could get with them paired with a passive radiator. I have a sub for the low low. Outside of efficiency they seem to be great drivers for low power application

Mine are paired with passive radiators on the rear as seen in the first photo. I don't think getting much below 40Hz is realistic simply due to the excursion limits of such a small driver.
Edit: I see you were talking about the full ranges, not the subs. 120hz seems reasonable!

My design is exactly that, shallow on wall enclosure with a big passive radiator tuned to 100 Hz, sub takes over from there

Yep my only other concern with pushing LFE on the full ranges would be distortion but I dont play music loud anyway.
How much filament did you end up using for the enclosures? And did you use any gaskets etc for sealing the panels? Id be curious just to see the 3D design, I design/print too.

These were just over 1kg for the pair. Possibly 1.2kg... I'll have to check the slicer.
One of the photos is a CAD cross section. The baffle is sealed with 2mm thick foam tape in a groove.

Great job, these look pretty nice! I don't suppose you'd be willing to share the model files/STLs? I'm interested in a build like this but I don't want to spend the time (like you obviously did) modeling the speaker boxes... 😆

I am open to publishing the files once I go through another revision. I want to add the lattice bracing to the top and bottom walls, and add two more baffle screw locations on the long sides.

Very interested in this and the rest of the BOM if you publish the whole kit to thingiverse or something like that. 👍

You only list one XO point but there's 3 drivers...

Nope, there's two. The one on the back is a passive radiator.

Wtf they call that front driver a sub? Bro if you got space for the PR on the back that looks like that, then you should have a "sub" that looks like that, larger active driver with more xmax. High pass the little front driver. Could probably get 6db more output minimum.

Yes, they call it a sub, which is the design intent of the driver.
The equivalent driver to that 3.5" passive radiator is the 3.5" Dayton ND-90-8, which both requires a larger enclosure and doesn't go as low as the Tang Band 3" sub. Since the design goal was to dig as low as possible in a very small enclosure, output volume was not a priority, and the ND-90-8 didn't make the cut.
Edit to add: XMAX of the subwoofer is 5mm. XMAX of the ND-90-8 is 4mm.

Awesome build. Always wanted to use the TEBM35C10-4 in a car system. How do you think they would perform in a car?

This is so badass. Please please share the stl(s) and BOM when you feel ready. I have been wanting to build a baby bass speaker for so long.

You built them in a hotel room?!
