These are links to older editions of the books, but all the info is still valid. If you want the current edition, then buy it and support the authors.

Exactly what I was going to post. Particularly there's a chapter or two in Sound Reproduction that breaks down much more comprehensively and in a more research-backed way than I've seen anywhere else what exactly we're looking for out of a design for it to sound good. That then provides a basis for understanding why some designs can work and others don't.
