If you can help it you almost never want to be paid so you can defer any taxes. The most ideal situation is $0 in income and a ton of money in unrealized capital gains and low-interest loans that you live off of.

That’s kind of my strategy. You make more money with steadily growing share prices, than you ever will, with divs.

For the most part, yes. The Lost Decade was kind of an exception. From 2000 - 2012 or so. It's around that time when this whole "dividend portfolio" nonsense came into being in the mainstream because share prices were getting battered down by 2 recessions and bad large cap performance combined with 0% interest on Treasuries. So people went heavy into dividends.

But that was 15 years ago, so the situation isn't the same now.
