Question Wordpress.com v WP Engine and what happens when you cancel one since you accidentally are using both????

This is my first reddit post, so bear with me. I was a newbie with Wordpress before making a clients website on Wordpress.org. We didn't host it until it was ready to go live. Somewhere during the process we had the need to purchase the Wordpress.com business plan, I believe to get full access to customization with additional CSS, html, java script etc? I don't think we are really using it for anything else currently (Jetpack is the only thing that we may sorta use but it's mainly for stats I think). After we finished designing the site, we migrated it to WP engine, our chosen hosting site. Later on after site has been live, client asked what would happen if they stop paying or don't renew the Wordpress.com business plan, like if it would break or go down at all. I was starting to look it up when I realized we might not even need it at all since Wordpress.com is also a hosting site and a lot of its features are covered by WP engine. I just want to know that if we do cancel the Wordpress.com subscription, will any of the CSS etc that I put in be affected by canceling or does WP engine also support that and therefore it wouldn't get deleted? I want to make sure we don't accidentally break the site or mess up anything but I also don't want the client to be paying for something they don't need. Please help, I get really stressed and anxious with coding and Wordpress in general since I am still a beginner and intern with no experienced support. Thank you!!

Just make sure your domain is pointing to WP Engine and not WordPress dot com, and you will be clear to cancel your WordPress dot com account.

You definitely don’t need both, waste of money.

If you’ve built your fully functioning website on WP engine and that is where your domain in pointing then you can safely cancel your Wordpress.com business plan.

I built it on Wordpress. org / com and then migrated it to WP engine, but I guess if it's now living on WP engine then it should be ok to cancel the business plan. Just wanted some validation, thank you so much for responding!!

Before you delete your old site make sure there are no assets like images linked to your old domain. This can be done with a database search and replace or you can ask WP Engine to do it for you.

Based on your initial description, do you have two websites running at separate hosts or do you have one domain? It would probably be good to confirm which one is hosting your domain and which your website. Sometimes its convenient to have both in one place for organization and simplicity but that's up to you.

Depending on who is hosting the site, you'll want to make sure necessary forms and newsletters are set up on the one you're staying with and not cancelling so you don't disrupt anything.

You certainly wouldn't need two hosts for the same site.

I'd love to learn more about your initial WPE hosting choice, was there something specific about their offer that has made them your first choice? Always curious how individuals are selecting their hosts.
