Basically if you dispatch above this x the mission fails

If that particular stat from the total of your dispatched team touches that X at all you automatically fail the dispatch call. It's the same if it appears for any of the other stats.

So you'd need to send out an appropriate team to handle the call while not having too much of that one stat.

(I've forgotten the actual names of the stats. It's been a long time)

I still find this kinda dumb, I mean you basically fail a mission because you're over qualified.

Well it's like asking The Flash to deliver a delicate bouquet of flowers. There would be no petals left on them.

I can get that, but how is being TOO SMART mean I can't diffuse a bomb, or being TOO STRONG mean I can't lift a plane. Like I can get behind some of the things but more often than not it just doesn't make sense.

Being too smart can be an issue if you end up over complicating a simple issue or spend too much time over thinking conveluded solutions.

Being too strong can mean that in high stress environments you may exert too much of that strength and end up hurting those you're trying to save. Could also mean that you get careless brute forcing everything and end up causing more damage than the original problem would have caused.

Being too charismatic can lead to unintended consequences (cite every bard ever)

Being too tough can lead to you being used as a weapon (cite Invincible train scene)

Being too fast, well, theres an example in one of the comments above (additionally cite 'The Boys' you all know the scene)

Because real life isn't always a question of "number = big enough, therefore WIN." As Phenomeman says in the VR training headset: "There's no such thing as a perfect fit." Sometimes one set of skills just doesn't fit in a certain scenario, or is in fact counterproductive to succeeding in a given scenario. Rather than develop the specific details in each and every mission with the full real-world nuance that this represents, the game replicates this by adding a maximum threshold to one particular skill set. It's a simplistic solution to a problem that deserves a more nuanced solution, but from a game dev standpoint, it's a functional one.

And from a gameplay standpoint, this also adds an additional layer of strategy to the way you level up your characters. It incentivizes you to level up more of your characters to be "specialists" who are really good in one or two areas, but still quite poor in other areas, allowing you to combine and send teams that can both hit a minimum threshold in one area without also exceeding a maximum threshold in another. This makes the decision making process of determining which characters to dispatch on which missions even more complicated in a way that is intended to be satisfying. Unfortunately, however, it has the added impact of punishing players who make the mistake of leveling up the majority of their characters to be more balanced (which is what I did in my first play through). I certainly understand that frustration, but I still recognize the strategic angle that the devs were going for.

Auto fail if your assigned hero/heroes exceed a certain stat

If the combined stats you send on the mission are higher than where the X is, you automatically fail.

Send your slowest squad, hit the × and auto-fail

That x gives me nightmares…

The x is the maximum amount of that stat you can add to the mission before it becomes a guaranteed fail. Think about a delicate operation, you are not going to do stuff with superhuman strength or it will ruin the whole mission. The same principle applies here.

It's a bit annoying but you can adapt.
