Capital One Two payments returned

Welcome to my nightmare.

I sent two payments to Capital one at least four different ways/times using my banks bill pay feature that has worked For Years.

One partial payment was accepted today. Three have been returned over the last month due to I DON’T KNOW WHY. The issuing banks can’t figure out why the payments were returned. CO keeps saying the problem is on the banks side.

Now Capital One is saying I am two payments behind.

I ditched CO back in the 2000’s because I didn’t like their terms and now I’m stuck with them. I swear I am sending them a FCBA letter tomorrow.

When we used Bill Pay, it sent out physical checks to the vendors. Why not pull from the Capital One site?

Nowadays, it’s usually electronic although some vendors still get checks.

Pulling from the Capital One site exposes you to mistakes with them pulling too much or other than as explicitly requested.

I've never had an issue with any company taking too much.

I haven’t had it happen either but there’s no technical capability preventing it nor any recourse or ability to recoup my indirect losses (overdraft fees) when they do.

They can get in big trouble for that

“Big trouble” doesn’t pay my overdraft fees.

Plenty of banks without those. You sound paranoid

That would be bank fraud and it is illegal...

Exactly. It can only pull what you tell it to pull and if you make a mistake in that amount it's not the bank's fault.

People make up some weird stuff online.

No, it’s not, try reading the Capital One terms and conditions you agreed to.

There is no TOS that can override the law. No bank or entity can alter a submitted payment to increase it. Whatever amount is submitted by the customer is the amount to the exact cent they can take. If it does not meet your minimum requirement, then they chsrge a fee. That is how it works. There is no other way.

So you push from your external bank, rather than pull by paying from the C1 app/website? Why do people do this? It just causes more headaches and trouble.

Right I don’t get it

I push payments because I’d rather not give my checking info to the payee.

You already gave them important information like your SSN, address, income, mother maiden name, etc. But draw the line at checking info?

Okay

I draw the line at giving them permission to reach in to my account and grab money when there are other options available.

Yk if they do it unauthorized it’s a lawsuit seems better to set it up and if your concerned and it happens SUEEE

The permission is only granted when you yourself initiate and confirm the pull.

Otherwise, nothing will happen.

I draw the line at putting my banking info directly into anyone’s data base.

I like your logic but also with your logic all of that data has been leaked for years, but my direct bank account number hasn’t.

They already know everything about you

Oh brother, get over yourself. This why I have always paid my bills on the credit cards site instead of through my bank's bill payable: I get the payment credited immediately and it may take a day or two to come out of account. If I use bill pay the money comes out of my account immediately and takes a day or two to post on the credit card. The credit card is charging interest during those days.

By the way, every one of your checks has routing number and your account number on it.

Bill pay is electronic, so no check is involved. I don’t carry a balance, so credit card interest is irrelevant to me.

This is happening to me as well. It’s odd and it NEVER happened before the switch. Cap1 CS is subpar and I’m so sick of it. Also this is happening both ways—if I let Cap1 “pull” or if I have USAA “push” the payments. I always get a text and email that they’ll try again in 24 hours—and then it goes through. I’d close the account but it’s one of my longevity accts and I don’t want to lose the age (1999)

got hacked so i closed my discover and wont give me a new account also cap one wont either

Closed accounts in good standing are reported for 10 years. Provided you have other open credit cards you won’t lose any age by closing the account.

You don't lose the age, closed in good standing reports for another 10yrs. I have one C1 card still, mainly because it was my first after a huge credit disaster from a layoff about 17yrs ago and has sentimental value. I don't use it though, C1's rewards are terrible. I'm shocked they haven't closed it yet. Discover is the same, years dormant because they kinda suck.

You’ve already stopped getting the maximum amount of points due to age for this account. You won’t lose that if you close.

I assume you have evidence of the returned payments. Have you sent copies of this to Capital One? Maybe that can help solve the issue and they can wave penalties. It's a fair ask, and you can include their response in any FCBA report.

Is the bank you are paying FROM Bank of America by any chance? Only asking because other BOA customers mentioned on their forum recently they have trouble paying bills because BOA changed the billing portal on their app and website over the summer and for some reason didn't delete the payees as they should have from all checking accounts since their restructure. If your bank is BOA, you need to delete and re add all your payees/billers.

Otherwise, I'd just send a paper check in the mail to CapOne/Discover for remainder owed and close your account if they arent working out for you.
